Hillary Clinton scheduled to appear at Brown fundraiser

Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to host what might be the single biggest fundraiser for Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown tonight in Potomac.

The former secretary of state and potential presidential candidate is headlining Brown's 5 p.m. event at a wooded 2.8-acre estate in the wealthy Washington suburb. Tickets cost $4,000 each even more for VIP tickets, according to an event invitation.

Brown campaign manager Justin Schall said as many as 500 people might attend and the campaign expects to raise more than $1 million a sum greater than that garnered during a May fundraiser for Brown featuring former President Bill Clinton.

Hillary Clinton has stepped up her political appearances in recent weeks, with events scheduled for Florida, Nevada, New York and New Hampshire to help other Democrats in the midterm elections. Clinton, a new grandmother, postponed another fundraiser that had been planned for today for a New Hampshire state senator according to the New Hampshire Journal. On Friday, the Clintons' only daughter, Chelsea, gave birth to the couple's first grandchild, a girl.

As of late Monday, Hillary Clinton was still expected in Maryland for Brown's event. If she comes, Clinton will not be the only potential 2016 presidential candidate on the grounds. Gov. Martin O'Malley also plans to attend.

The high-profile, high-dollar event comes during a bitterly fought campaign for Maryland's governor.

The Democratic Governors Association has put more than $750,000 behind attack ads against Brown's Republican opponent, Larry Hogan.

The Republican Governors Association, in turn, sent its chairman, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, to Maryland this month for a fundraiser to benefit Hogan.

Hogan campaign spokesman Adam Dubitsky used Clinton's appearance in Maryland to fire a salvo at Brown.

"Unlike the Clinton White House, which worked with Republicans to grow the economy, cut the deficit and create jobs, Anthony Brown is committed to extending the failed policies of one-party rule, his 40 job-killing tax hikes and reckless spending," Dubitsky said. "So, other than payback for Anthony Brown endorsing her for president over Barack Obama, we have no idea why Secretary Clinton would associate with him."

Hillary Clinton to Headline Environmental Groups Annual Dinner

If Hillary Clinton decides to run for presidenta move that observers say is increasingly likelythe topics shes choosing to speak about indicate she would take a progressive view on energy and climate change.

Just months before shes expected to announce whether shes running, the former secretary of state will deliver a speech to a room full of environmentalists at the League of Conservation Voters annual dinner in New York City on Dec. 1.

Earlier in September, Mrs. Clinton spoke at a clean energy conference hosted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), in Las Vegas.

Like that speech, Mrs. Clinton is unlikely to take sides on controversial issues, such as whether she thinks the Keystone XL pipeline should be built. Instead, Mrs. Clinton is expected to use the New York dinner as a pulpit to lay out clean-energy and environmental issues important to her, including global action on climate change and helping other nations tap into cleaner energy sources.

The Washington, D.C.-based group League of Conservation Voters campaigns on behalf of candidates who support environmental regulations aimed at controlling carbon emissions and clean-energy measures.

The group typically doesnt back candidates who support Keystone, but last week it endorsed Michelle Nunn, the Democratic Senate candidate in Georgia, even though she has vocally criticized other Democrats for not supporting Keystone.

A Role Model for Clintons Grandchild: Machiavelli

Hillary Clinton accepted an illustrated version of Niccolo Machiavellis The Prince on behalf of her three-day-old granddaughter at one of two fundraisers she headlined for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Manhattan today.

New York Representative Steve Israel, the DCCC chairman, gave Clinton the adaptation of Machiavellis treatise on political philosophy, several other books and an infant-sized New York Mets uniform. Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky, the first grandchild of the former secretary of state and former President Bill Clinton, was born on Sept. 26.

Machiavelli is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand power, Israel said in a statement. Im sure this will be helpful to Charlotte as she navigates the cutthroat world of the playground and mommy and me.

Hillary Clinton spoke about economic security for the middle class at a lunch with 60 high-end donors to the DCCC and a lower-dollar event for about 300 contributors to Democratic candidates, Israel said.

She told donors, You shouldnt have to be the granddaughter of a president to have access to opportunities, Israel said.

How Similar Is Ta Leonis Character on Madam Secretary to Hillary Clinton?

Hillary Clinton once joked, If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle. In the first episode of the new hit CBS dramaMadam Secretary, the title character does exactly that. Co-creators Morgan Freeman and executive producer Lori McCreary admit that the show which stars Ta Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the secretary of State in the age of terrorism and internet-based security breaches was inspired by Clintons tenure in the office. And thats not the only similarity between the two women. For example, Clinton once said in a speech, There are three legs to the stool of American foreign policy: defense, diplomacy, and development. And we are responsible for two of the three legs. Similarly, Leoni has incredible legs.

But key differences also abound: Clinton traveled more than any of her predecessors, while her fictional counterpart is now several months into the job and doesn't appear to have traveled at all. And, predictably for a lead character on network TV, McCord approaches unrealistic perfection: She speaks French, German, Arabic, and Farsi (Clinton: only English), and shes been given the job because shes the least political person the president knows (Clinton: a tad more Machiavellian). Still, the doppelgngers have more in common than not. For one, they both read scripts. Also, they both spell Madam without the ultimate e, so clearly they hate the French. Below, we compare and contrast Clinton and McCord, tally which Madam Secretary plots were ripped from actual headlines, and predict which parts of Hillarys reign will be fictionalized next.

FAMILY

RESUM

ADVERSARIES

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES

The first three episodes borrow plots from some of the biggest trials of Clintons appointment. In the pilot, two American brothers are arrested in Syria and accused of spying (a.k.a. Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd, and Josh Fattal, caught hiking on the Iran-Iraq border in 2009). The second episode deals with an armed mob outside an American embassy (this time in Sanaa, Yemen, rather than Benghazi, Libya). And in the third episode, McCord manages the fallout from a WikiLeaks-type security breach.

The story lines are so similar, the only differences between fact and fiction are in the Secretary's responses. On CBS, McCord seems to be righting the wrongs of the past, of which she of course isnt always aware. Time and again, she gets it right, sometimes miraculously, and never while compromising her integrity. Remembering that opponents called Hillary Lady Macbeth during Bills presidential campaign, it seems that Madam Secretary endeavors to reposition her as Desdemona a virtuous woman wrongly accused. If thats the case, the writers will have plenty of material to revisit. If our predictions for future plotlines are correct, McCord will ...

... travel to Russia to successfully block the incarceration of an anarchist rock band called Vagina Brawl.

... visit troops in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she actually is under hostile fire from snipers, yet she tells no press about it later.
