Bill and Hillary Clinton Meet PM Modi; Laud Initiative to Clean Ganga River

New York: Showering effusive praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US President Bill Clinton today said no one else before him had the "knowledge and votes" to build a national economy, as the Clinton couple met the Indian leader in New York.

Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton had a 45-minute long meeting with PM Modi, who was also accompanied by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Hillary and Swaraj warmly hugged each other. Both the Prime Minister Modi and Ms Swaraj also greeted the Clintons on becoming new grandparents.

Chelsea, the daughter of Bill and former Secretary of State Hillary, gave birth to daughter Charlotte last week.

"(I) am thrilled. No 1 had the knowledge and voted before you to build a national economy," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted Bill Clinton as conveying to PM Modi.

Known for their love for India, Bill and Hillary were expected to discuss Indo-US engagements and the priorities of the new government in this regard.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of reports that Hillary may contest the US Presidential elections in 2016.

Mr Clinton also lauded PM Modi for his initiative to clean Ganga river. "Thank you for undertaking cleaning of Ganga. It is a sacred project and smart approach," the former American President told the Prime Minister.

"Your efforts at cleaning the Ganga will send a message to others in Asia," Akbaruddin tweeted Hillary as conveying to PM Modi.

Hillary Clinton: Grandmother-in-chief?

Everything Hillary Clinton does these days is scrutinized for signs of political import, so why should becoming a grandmother be any different?

After Clinton's daughter Chelsea gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Friday, the political world spent little time cooing over photos of the baby before getting down to what's really important: How will the new granddaughter affect Hillary Clinton's decision on a 2016 presidential bid?

Some predict Clinton will feel she owes it to her granddaughter to try to make history as the first female president.

"Let's be serious. She is running for president," said Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus Sunday on "Face the Nation." "Having a grandchild doesn't make it less likely she is running for president, and I would argue having a granddaughter makes it more likely she is running for president."

"She does not want to be explaining to 10-year-old Charlotte that grandma could have been president but decided to stay home and change diapers," Marcus added. "I don't think so. She's running."

Others have said Clinton might not want to spend time navigating the swamp of Washington, D.C., when she could enjoy a quieter life with her family.

Marcus' colleague at the Washington Post, Kathleen Parker, wrote in April: "It is not crazy to wonder whether Hillary Clinton...might pause and think: Do I want to suffer through another campaign and then bear the burdens of the world at this point in my life? Or do I want to enjoy this new little life and work through the family foundation on my own schedule?"

For some, the suggestion that Hillary Clinton must choose between being a grandmother and being president is itself sexist. After all, plenty of grandfathers have run for president, and nobody saw fit to ask them whether they could balance their family life with their political ambition.
