Will Hillary Clinton be elected Americas next president? The polls suggest she will.
Recent polls compiled by Real Clear Politics show her winning 67 percent of the vote in Democratic primaries, with no other candidate above 11 percent. General election polling shows Clinton with an average lead over various possible Republican nominees of 51 to 39 percent.
But an election isnt over until it is over, and this one hasnt started. For one thing, no one is sure whether Clinton will actually run. She turns 69 in 2016 (the same age as Ronald Reagan when he was first elected in 1980) and she may consider that her achievements in eight years as first lady and U.S. senator, and four years as secretary of state are enough for one lifetime.
Her achievements in that last office may look less impressive than they did in the first Obama term when majorities expressed approval of the presidents foreign policy. Clintons reset with Russia suddenly looks less like a triumph than a misfire.
Shes also had health scares: a blood clot behind her right knee in 1998 and another in her skull in December 2012.
The 2016 election will be only the fourth in the last 40 years in which the incumbent president wasnt running. In the previous three 1988, 2000, 2008 the candidate of the presidents party ran roughly in line with the incumbents job approval.
That produced a 53 percent to 46 percent victory for George H. W. Bush, a popular vote plurality for Al Gore and a 53-46 defeat for John McCain.
The odd thing about 2016 polling is that Hillary Clinton runs far above Barack Obamas current job approval currently 43 percent while in the few polls pitting Vice President Joe Biden and others against Republicans, those Democrats run far behind.
Thats odd, because were in a period of straight-ticket voting, and in recent Senate and House elections, Democratic candidates have won percentages highly correlated with Obamas job approval.
One reason Clinton may be running ahead of the presidents approval is the high retrospective approval of Bill Clintons presidency. The 1990s are remembered, largely but not entirely accurately, as a time of booming job growth, technological progress, peace and American primacy abroad.

But dont assume that will discourage Mr. Bush, the former two-term governor of Florida, from getting into the 2016 presidential race. Those numbers might actually encourage Bush to jump in, says Republican pollster Ed Goeas. He was speaking Tuesday at a breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor.
All of a sudden, its no longer too many Bushes, says Mr. Goeas, who conducts the Battleground Poll with Democrat Celinda Lake. It becomes two very powerful political families going up against each other.
Bush and Mrs. Clinton both spoke at a conference on higher education Tuesday near Dallas. They were not on stage together, but just appearing at the same event was good enough to spark another round of Hillary-Jeb 2016 headlines.
In fact, Bush has been sounding more positive lately about a possible campaign. So has his mother, Barbara Bush, wife and mother of ex-presidents. Last year, the family matriarch declared that weve had enough Bushes in the White House. But earlier this month, she changed her tune and called her No. 2 son the best qualified person in the country.
Some folks may find the idea of a Clinton-Bush presidential matchup distasteful. After all, Americans are famous for telling their kids they could grow up to be president someday. You dont have to belong to a political royal family to rise to the top, the thinking goes. Mrs. Bush called it silly to think that we cant find more than two or three families to run for high office. Indeed, Presidents Clinton and Obama both have humble origins.
But theres a lot to be said for coming from a political family. Thats especially true now with the presidency. The fundraising demands alone have never been more daunting. Ditto the demand to organize staff and volunteers around the country. If Hillary Clinton runs, shes the instant favorite to win the Democratic nomination, in part because she can activate both with the snap of her fingers.

Are you reaching out to be like, "What can I do?" I can't say but so much, but Hillary's gonna win. Trust me. And it's a two-for-one: Bill is the coolest dude in the game, still plays saxophone, and every woman in the world wants him. It's a two-for-one. Hillary's gonna win. Everybody laughed at me when I said Obama was going to win, but I knew what he represented. But I know what Hillary represents: She represents a woman in power, and she did great as the Secretary of State. She's gonna win.
