Chelsea Clinton Talks Growing Up in the White House Under "Very Firm" Parents, Says Marriage Is "Incredibly Important"

Growing pains in the White House! Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton opened up in a new interview on Monday, March 17, about calling 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home during her teenage years.

"I was always deeply aware that I was living in history," Clinton, now 34, told Marlo Thomas in an interview shared by Huffington Post. President Bill Clinton's daughter would arrive home from school and walk through the receiving room, which she knew was a special place. "But then I would have dinner with my parents at the kitchen table every night!" she said with a laugh. "There was much about my life that also was normal."

Last week during her first visit to SXSW in Austin, Texas, Clinton provided anecdotes of growing up as somewhat of a normal teen in the '90s. "I definitely taught my parents how to text and how to charge their phones," she told a large crowd of 3,000 as reported by CNN. "I'm sure that's not uncommon for many people in this room."

The Stanford grad added that she would debate her parents on current events and hot button political issues growing up. "It taught me that not only was it okay to have an opinion and a point of viewit was expected."

Clinton was just 12 years old when her dad Bill Clinton, the former governor of Arkansas, took the West Wing in 1993. Enduring two consecutive Presidential terms during her rebellious teenage years in America's spotlight wasn't easy, Clinton admitted to Thomas. As the only child of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chelsea said her parents were strict. "My parents were very firm about me always getting my homework done," she recalled with a laugh. "But I'd get to attend special musical performances and shows sometimes."

Now a wife and working adult, who serves as the Vice Chair of her father's Clinton Foundation, Chelsea discussed the pressures of balancing her jam-packed schedule with sharing time with husband of nearly four years, Marc Mezvinsky. "My marriage is incredibly important to me," Clinton told Thomas. "It's the place from which I engage in the world every day, and the place to which I return every day."

On the horizon possibly for Clinton and Mezvinsky? As she told Glamour last November, the couple hopes to make 2014, "the year of the baby."

Hillary Clinton like youve never seen her before

Hillary Clinton may well be the most "known" politician in the world.

She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have been on the national stage for more than two decades -- traveling from Arkansas to the White House to the Senate to the 2008 campaign trail and finally to the State Department. During that time, every look and utterance from Hillary has been examined, then examined again, then analyzed, then overanalyzed.

That's why this series of photos -- shot by LIFE magazine in 1969 as part of a feature on outstanding college students -- is so fascinating. It captures Clinton before she became "HILLARY CLINTON".

LIFE let us have two pictures from their Clinton shoot. You can check all of them out here.

Poll: Who's tougher: Clinton or Obama?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -

Americans have a positive view of Hillary Clinton's personal characteristics that in many cases has only improved with time, and on some key measures of toughness and leadership skills, she scores higher than President Barack Obama, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/ORC International survey released Sunday indicates that most Americans consider the former secretary of state likable, honest, compassionate and admirable. Sixty four percent say she is tough enough to handle a crisis -- 11 percentage points higher than the president. And an equal 64% describe Clinton as a strong and decisive leader -- 14 points higher than the President.

Clinton gets her highest marks (68%) on likeability, and that number is up five points since 2007, as her 2008 bid for the White House was getting underway. Fifty-six percent say she shares their values -- up six points from 2007. And 56% say she is honest and trustworthy -- up five points.

But Americans also think she can handle the job of president. Nearly six in 10 say Clinton can manage the government effectively, 55% believe she can get the economy moving again, and 61% say she has the right experience to be president.

If there is a weakness in the 13 items tested in the poll, it is the number of Americans who say they would be proud to have her as president. At 50%, it is the lowest score that Clinton received in the poll, and it is down seven points since her failed presidential bid in 2008.

"Obviously, there are big partisan divides on Hillary Clinton with most Republicans reluctant to say anything positive about her, and that suggests that views of her personal characteristics may sour once a presidential election gets underway. But right now, Clinton has a reservoir of goodwill that would be the envy of any potential presidential candidate," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Americans split on president as a leader

As for Obama, a majority of Americans say that the president is not a commanding presence on the world stage -- 57% say that leaders of other countries no longer respect Obama.

Among the U.S. public, views of Obama's leadership skills are split right down the middle. Half think Obama has been a strong and decisive leader, with an equal 50% saying that description does not apply to Obama. There is also a roughly 50/50 split on whether Obama inspires confidence.
