Mobile and Technology

Jun 19, 2012

In January this year, EyeforTravel featured an article titled Why 2012 is going to be The Year of SoLoMo. The three initiatives of SoLoMo (social, local, and mobile), are key components of the new always connected travel consumers behaviour.

Social is about sharing our travel experiences, mobile speaks to our always on-the-go nature and is supported by the technological advancements in smartphones - and local relates to our need for information from our immediate environment.

The convergence of these three initiatives provides a new sweet spot for travel brands to engage customers on the move. The location-aware capabilities of smartphones enable brands to streamline search results as well as target the customer with highly relevant local offers.

The integration with social media provides an ideal opportunity to encourage on-site guest experience sharing. A great example of this is that of Fiesta Hotel GroupssUshuaia Beach Hotel Ibiza featured in a recent EyeforTravel article.

EyeforTravels Social Media & Mobile Strategies for Travel 2012 conference in San Francisco earlier this year in March saw an insightful presentation by Lise Struwing, Director, Web Strategy for luxury hotel group Loews Hotels. Struwing teamed up with Margaret Mastrogiacomo, Manager, New Media & Creative Strategy atHeBS to demonstrate how they took an integrated approach to SoLoMo designed for maximum return on investment.

T he Milk aren't a band you could ever accuse of being complacent.

The Essex four-piece have worked their socks off to get where they are now and they're determined not only to make the most of it but enjoy it while they're at it.

Singer and guitarist Rick is in buoyant mood when I talk to him ahead of their UK tour which includes a date at Chinnery's, Southend, this Saturday, June 2.

The band are busy rehearsing while the sun is blazing outside so Rick is glad to get out while we chat, saying they feel like a "gang of albino moles" being stuck inside on a day like this.

These are good times for The Milk. Their first ever headline tour of the UK in April went extremely well, selling out pretty much wherever they went. But they're hungry for more and can't wait to get back on the road again. You get the impression with some bands that touring can be a bit of a drag. Not so with The Milk.

"Touring is the most adrenaline-fuelled thing I've ever done," says Rick. "I loved everything about it, the travelling, the gigging, the hotels, visiting different towns... if that's a hardship, you shouldn't be in a band.

"If you can't enjoy doing that you really should be in a different job."

That The Milk are so determined and single-minded shouldn't come as a surprise. They've not only worked hard to get where they are but they've given up a lot too.

The band all know each other from growing up together in Wickford. They'd been in bands over the years but had gone their separate ways for a while. In that time, they rediscovered the music they loved Motown, Stax and Trojan and got back together with a new direction for the band and a determination to really go for it.

"We had a eureka moment. We wanted to be a bunch of Peter Pans and never grow up," says Rick.

W Hotels Launches Online Search for Final DJ to Join 2012 Program

For the first time ever, the eighth and final DJ, representing Asia, will be found through an online talent search held by W Hotels Worldwide, in partnership with MIX.dj. Starting today through June 15, aspiring DJs can go to whotels.com/music to upload their mix for the chance to join the 2012 DJ Lab. Uploaded mixes will automatically be entered into the MIX.dj platform where sharing and voting by the public will commence. Those DJs with the highest number of votes will then be selected by the DJ Lab Mentors to perform at various W Hotels in Asia in May and June, showcasing their unique, cutting-edge sounds.

The first of these events will kick off at W Taipei on May 18, where LAcqua will be on-site at the official Show Off party to witness firsthand the DJs who have submitted mixes for consideration. On May 26, W Hong Kong will host its first Summer Series pool party of the season, giving the DJs additional platforms for exposure. Finally, W Seoul will welcome 2011 DJ Lab participant, DJ Angus Wong, on June 1 for a W Happening featuring select DJs from the online search, industry tastemakers and VIPs. The search will end on June 15 and the winner announced as the 2012 DJ Lab commences in July.
