The Top Five Parties in San Francisco this Weekend

Happy New Year! Hopefully your Monday night festivities were as fun as ours were. But just in case they weren't, you'll have ample opportunity to make up for lost time and start 2013 on a high note. Yes, things are a little mellower than usual, but that doesn't mean there aren't some serious party opportunities. Get your brain back in gear and take a glance at this list. Read on -- your weekend awaits.

5. Haeteria presents The Antacid Crew @ Slate Friday, Jan. 4, 10 p.m.-2 a.m.

The recent closure of Deco Bar has caused a stir in local nightlife. One party affected is Haeteria, the long-running retro rave that's played a major role as a live space for an emerging scene of avant-garde dance music producers. No longer at its old haunt, the party found a new home at Slate -- the club formerly known as Som -- and luckily not much has changed. This month it welcomes The Antacid Crew, a duo from with a taste for rogue warehouse parties, acid house, and archaic electronic instruments. Listen to "Moonbeam Acid," "Chintzy Rinse," and this live jam session for an idea what to expect. As usual, resident DJs Nihar, Smac, Jason P., and Tristes Tropiques will be on hand to keep things ravey until last call.

4. All Night Long with Peter Blick @ Public Works Friday, Jan. 4, 10 p.m.-3 a.m.

The arrival of Public Works in 2010 was one of the best things to happen in San Francisco nightlife. A large venue with a good sound, wood flooring, and ridiculously well-curated bookings, it's become one of the city's major weekend destinations . Yet, while the club is celebrated for its globetrotting guests and extravagent productions, sometimes the talents at work behind it get glossed over. One such person is Peter Blick, a man who wears so many hats his job description is "This and That/Fog Machine Operator...Talent Booking / Promotion / Production /Publicity/DJing and whatever else." As it happens, he's also had a long DJ career that stretches back to the latter half of the 1990s. This Friday, he's set to man the decks in the club's upstairs lounge for a five-hour journey through the music he loves -- with a special emphasis on the techier side of deep house. Get an idea of the direction by listening to this podcast recorded for DISTRIKT a few years ago.

3. Martin Buttrich @ Monarch Saturday, Jan. 5, 9 p.m.-4 a.m.

DC10, Amnesia, Space -- these Ibiza mainstays are the kind of places you can expect to find Martin Buttrich. A longtime face on the worldwide scene, he specializes in a clean yet muscular brand of minimal techno best heard on his classic "Full Clip." These days he's known for co-founding, with fellow Germans Loco Dice, Desolat, a forward-thinking techno/tech-house label that was responsible for some of the biggest club cuts of 2012. (To hear what we mean, have a listen to Pirupa's "Party Non Stop"). It's rare that he makes an appearance in San Francisco, but it's rarer still when he performs live at such an intimate venue as Monarch. Get in the mood for madness with his recently recorded "Live @ ADE, Desolat Mixmag DJ Lab."

First release on Blood Records > PARTYSAN International.

The duo mostly known as AKA.SO has been working hard the last few years to provide Europe with quality in sound. Pabie and Ricardo are both veterans in mixing, throwing parties and making people dance in well-established parties throughout Italy and beyond. With years of experience behind, tons of vinyl collection and a huge Detroit and Chicago techno and house influence, the duo has come together under the umbrella of Blood Records, ready to get young and eager new coming artists on board.

Pabie and Ricardos first label releases are called simply A1-Blood#001 and B1-Blood#001, which have a strong Detroit techno sound. The drum machines incorporated with the bass kick and techy vibe are a great peak time dance floor cruncher. Both tracks are strong and perfectly constructed for that midnight boogie that makes you want more. The light vocal break on A1-BLOOD#001 is a fun way to inspire the crowd.

Pabie is one of the most charismatic names in the underground, actually, who doesn't know the name of Pabie in the underground club circus? He began in 2000 with his first turntables and started to collect vinyl records of all kinds. Now his taste in music is supreme. In his sets he is taking you on a journey from classic house music to dub and techno. A couple of years ago Pabie started producing his own experimental tracks without frontiers: Everything that blows up the dance floor is ok for me.

Pabie's partner in the AKA.SO duo, Ricardo, is contributing with his various flavours of club music, from techno to deep and house. Fascinated in nightlife Ricardo started his career as a DJ playing at numerous private and open air parties in his home town Milan like Belle Epoque, Wormhole, Trust Me!, Beat-Bar, the Ministry of Sound events in Milan, Soft, House Motion, Bassline Underground, Body Language, Lift, the Milan Mayday street parade, Gloss Club, and his own Morphine parties launched in 2010. Ricardo's productions are inspired by underground sounds from every corner of the planet, ranging from techno, Detroit house, neo-Detroit to tech-house, Chicago old-school, downtempo and deep house.

Make sure you keep an eye on music coming out on Blood Records and to follow Pabie and Ricardo aka AKA.SO on their upcoming tour dates.

Rumor has it: Cocoon leaving Amnesia??

Running one of the most successful techno nights on the island for many years, neither the clubs nor the promoters have yet officially confirmed the Cocoon move. But what we do know is that last summer Cocoon was facing challenges with a significant expansion in the nightlife scene with parties like Jamie Jones Hot Creations at DC10 and Richie Hawtins appearances as ENTER at Space, all addressing the same underground audience. Same as Music On, Amnesias new premium techno addition on Fridays.

Friday nights at Amnesia turned out to be an overwhelming success from the opening to the closing. We can only guess that Marco Carolas selection of a magnetic underground DJ line up in combination with an extremely friendly guest list policy for workers and reasonable door charge had pulled some fans away from Cocoon Mondays, mainly in the season workers and locals circles. Maybe this indeed could have caused Cocoon to reconsider their collaboration with Amnesia and if it turns out that they do make the move from their long-time home base, Monday nights at Space could be a conclusive option.

Though still a rumor, its a buzzing favorite which we are looking forward with anticipation to see if the rumor really has it.

Christmas Crackers Josh Demello | Essential Ibiza News

Posted on December 24, 2012 by admin

Josh Demello was brought up in the dance music scene, from the early days he accompanied his dad to the illegal parties that he was involved in and from that moment he was hooked. While his school friends were buying comics, he was buying Mixmag, soaking in as much information as he could. Fast forward to the present and he has enjoyed a second full season as an Ibiza resident and is getting set to pack his case and travel across the world to fulfil some DJ bookings. Essentialibiza caught up with Josh as part of our Christmas Crackers season

Youve played alongside many of the worlds top DJs, which in particular have you learned from or been inspired by? Ive been lucky enough to play alongside a lot of my favourite DJs over the years but playing alongside Todd Terry at the start of the year meant a lot to me because I have been a huge fan of his since I was a kid. He is the daddy of house music and Ive always been inspired by him. Playing alongside Pete Tong at Privilege and at The Warehouse in Leeds this year was pretty important to me as well as Ive always been inspired by him and his outstanding contributions to the dance music scene.

At 23 you have played at many of the worlds top venues to massive audiences, what are your aspirations and what drives you in achieving them? Id love to one day be known for my contributions to the music industry in some way or another, I love to keep travelling the world and playing in new clubs. Seeing positive energy and people in clubs, having a good time, dancing and enjoying the music is what drives me.

You have a real understanding of the dance music scene, much of which took place before you were born, where does this knowledge come from? My Dad was involved in illegal house and techno raves and warehouse parties throughout the 90s so I was introduced to dance music from a really early age. I was going to a lot of raves and festivals with him when I was a kid. I started to watch DJs and became fascinated by what a DJ does and wanted to learn how to DJ. I fell in love with house music from a very early age and started collecting vinyl from when I was nine years old. I remember being at school and when a lot of the other kids were buying comics I was buying Mixmag and other DJ mags. Dance music and DJing became an obsession and Ive never got out of it, Im glad I was introduced to it and got into it from an early age.

The last couple of years have seen you live and play in Ibiza, how important was that move in your development? Yeah its really important for me. Ive been coming to Ibiza for years, but it was only two summers ago when I was offered the residency at Kanya so decided to stay for the full season. This year I was also a resident at Amnesia, played for a sold out Radio 1 event in the main room of Privilege, played at Space and Sankeys a few times and of course Kanya, Savannah and Caf del Mar on the sunset strip. Its been a great few years and Ive met some amazing people, Its been a lot of fun!

What is your favourite Ibiza gig? Playing on the terrace at Amnesia, Its such a great club when its packed, the vibe is incredible. This year, playing the closing set for Cream on the Amnesia terrace after Eric Prydz was amazing, a lot of my friends were there and it was full to capacity right till the end.
