ECHO Entertainment News: Roll up roll up as Sasha joins Yousef for Circus 10th birthday at the Masque

Alexander Coe aka Sasha (158)

Ahead of his city gig, Emma Johnson catches up with the legendary Sasha

SASHA is feeling under the weather. Im back from Ibiza with the rave flu, he croaks. He certainly has reason to be feeling less than 100 per cent. He has just reached the end of a summer which saw him play everywhere from the US to the Ukraine, then there were all those gigs on the White Isle.

And there is the small matter of his recent birthday too. Yeah, he laughs, thats probably responsible for it.

Then again, after more than two decades in the club business, you would think Sasha would be immune to the rave flu by now.

Seemingly not. The boy from Bangor, largely credited with kickstarting the superstar DJ trend (way back in 1991 he was the first DJ to grace Mixmags cover) all those years ago dashing between Shellys in Stoke, Cream in Liverpool and New Yorks legendary Twilo, is not actually invincible it turns out.

The summer was really hectic, four or five gigs in a weekend. The shows at Ushuaia (in Ibiza) were wicked.

I just did a festival in south Ukraine which was crazy and in June I toured the States.

Of course he did, isnt everyone going to America these days?

I have been going there for years, he recalls. But now with the whole EDM (electronic dance music) movement, the scene is ridiculously big.

Memphis – Lost Lands – Video

09-09-2010 07:34 Memphis - Around The World/Lost Lands - 1992 The 89 rave scene made many of us get off our arses and make our own tunes. It was a punk DIY ethic. In the winter of 91/92 I put finger to sampler in some mates' bedroom studio and came up with Around the World and Lost Lands. This white label got a great review from Paul Daley and the folks at Zoom Records in Camden. I even got a lovely phonecall from Massive Attack. Lost Lands was played by DJ Alfredo in Ibiza. I was on my way to musical obscurity! So here's my contribution to the Old Skool Rave Scene: a dreamy tune for swaying to on some distant beach... (Big thanks to Andrew Grimwood for engineering and help)

Playtime Toons – Shaker Song (Blakkat Remix) Video.wmv – Video

23-05-2011 19:10 Playtime Toons' Classic Balearic House Anthem Shaker Song remixed by Blakkat. UK disc jockeys Trevor Fung, Paul Oakenfold, and Danny Rampling are commonly credited with having "discovered" Balearic Beat in 1987 while on holiday in Ibiza. Reportedly, they were introduced to the music at Amnesia, an Ibizan nightclub, by DJ Alfredo from Argentina, who had a residency there.[3] DJ Alfredo, whose birth name is Alfredo Fiorito, played an eclectic mix of dance music whose style encompassed the indie hypno grooves of the Woodentops, the mystic rock of the Waterboys, early house, Europop, and oddities from the likes of Peter Gabriel and Chris Rea. After visiting other clubs on the island where similar music was being played, including Pacha and Ku, Oakenfold and his friend Trevor Fung returned to London, where they unsuccessfully tried to establish a nightclub called the Funhouse in the Balearic style. Returning to Ibiza during the summer of 1987, Oakenfold rented a villa where he hosted a number of his DJ friends, including Danny Rampling, Johnny Walker, and Nicky Holloway. Returning to London after the summer, Oakenfold reintroduced the Balearic style at a South London nightspot called the Project Club. The club initially attracted those who had visited Ibiza and who were familiar with the Balearic concept. Fueled by their use of Ecstasy and an emerging fashion style based on baggy clothes and bright colors, these Ibiza veterans were responsible for propagating ...
