1 . Tonal talents
Native English speakers whove managed to learn Cantonese from scratch: give yourselves a pat on the back. The language has a total of six to nine tones, depending on where youre hearing it, compared to Englishs zero tones. No other Asian language comes close. (There are four tones in Mandarin, five in Thai and six in Vietnamese). Thats kind of like saying one English word can be pronounced six different ways and have at least six different meanings.
Locals like to say this makes us particularly good at music (certain karaoke sessions have proven otherwise) and studies have shown theres some truth to this.
To add to the complexity and fun of the language, Cantonese is a dialect with new slang invented everyday and many words arent used in written communication.

Ed Sheeran has revealed that he was high on MDMA when director Peter Jackson texted him to ask if he would write a song for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter admits he decided to try the drug for the first time while on holiday in Ibiza, attending his producer Jack Gosslings wedding.
He told Rolling Stone magazine: "If I was ever going to try it, it would've been there.
"I thought the text wasn't real, because I was like, 'Is everything just great today?'"
The 'Lego House' hitmaker, who went on to write the track I See Fire for the film, also spoke about his upcoming album, 'x', and claims he wanted raw, honest songs from the heart.
He explained: "When you hear that Kesha-Pitbull song, you know it's a hit, but it doesn't make you want to cry or laugh or sit in a corner for five hours just repeating it."
Meanwhile, Ed also recently revealed one track from his album 'Don't' is about an ex-lover and singer who cheated on him in a hotel with a friend while he was downstairs.
He said: "It's 100 percent not about Taylor [Swift]. Taylor's one of these people that if you p*ss her off and she writes a song about you, it's not good news for you.
"I've never dated Taylor. I've dated a few singers, though."

It has taken a while, but SEAT has joined Volkswagen and Audi in offering the 1.4 TSI Active Cylinder Technology turbo petrol engine in one of its models.
Fitted to the Ibiza FR, the ACT unit is unusual in that two of its four cylinders shut down when only a small amount of power is required. How effective this is in the real world depends on how you drive the car, of course, but the official results are worth paying attention to.
Compared to the previous Ibiza 1.4 TSI, this one is slightly slower (the maximum power output having dropped from 148bhp to 138bhp), but it has much better combined fuel economy, and the CO2 rating has dropped by around 30g/km. Vehicle Excise Duty is now in Band B, the lowest before exemption, and for business users the BIK rating has fallen from 20% to 14%.
Pricing has also dropped by over 1000, though this is largely because the previous ACT engine was available only with DSG semi-automatic transmission and the new cars have manual gearboxes, which are inherently cheaper.
1.4 TSI ACT versions of the Ibiza FR cost 15,320 (three-door SC), 15,870 (five-door hatchback) and 16,570 (ST estate).
There's also a new model with the same engine called the FR Edition, which gets 17" titanium effect alloy wheels, door mirrors in the same colour, red seatbelts and brake calipers, rear privacy glass and climate control air-conditioning. In this form, the SC costs 15,920 and the five-door 16,470. There's no estate version.
