‘Don’t call me the British Warren Buffett’: Jim Mellon gives a candid insight into his world

By Simon Watkins for The Mail on Sunday

A child born today could expect to live to 120 years of age; in 15 years time perfectly safe driverless cars will be common; and Nigel Farage is absolutely right that Britain should quit the EU. Welcome to the world of Jim Mellon.

As one of Britains richest people his wealth is estimated at 850million Mellon has been described as our very own Warren Buffett. His wealth was made in investment in emerging markets, notably Russia.

But he also made headlines recently when it emerged he had introduced Farage to a millionaire leading donor and had invited the Ukip chief to his birthday lunch at a top eaterie in, of all places, Brussels. He describes Farage as a friend rather than pinning his political colours to the Ukip mast.

Casual: Jim Mellon in the City this week

But despite the penchant for Belgiums restaurants, Mellon is at one with Farage in his dislike of their bureaucrats.

I have a house in Brussels and I can see the Brussels bureaucracy up close and on exit from the European Union, I am totally with him. I dont believe it would be a disaster if we left the EU, because they sell a lot more to us than we sell to them. There are ways of accommodation with the EU, demonstrated by Switzerland which the British could model themselves on.

Theres an intractable problem of imposing a one-size-fits-all system on disparate nations. The idealistic appeal of political union in Europe just doesnt work. And he saves his worst criticism for France. France is run by a committee of lemmings who are shepherding the whole population over a cliff. Its just extraordinary, he declares.

But 57-year-old Mellon is clearly reluctant to be drawn into British politics. I am based in the Isle of Man and my businesses are based there, so I cant vote in the UK and I wouldnt want to, he says.

The Launch of Ecosirenis at Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Mexico (PRWEB) November 13, 2014

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa has recently launched a new initiative, Ecosirenis. The program offers a wide variety of activities allowing guests to enjoy the hotels natural surroundings while also educating them on sound environmental practices.

Sirenis Hotels & Resorts believes that the success of the tourism industry relies on continual preservation of the environment, explains Amanda Carlow, Director of Sales & Marketing. With the launch of Ecosirenis, we have taken an extra step by encouraging guest involvement in our green initiatives.

For active vacationers, Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa now offers walking and biking tours through its newly created eco-trails. The paths were created to highlight the diversity of flora and fauna around the property.

One of these guided tours leads guests through brand new Ecosirenis Nursery. This conservation area is separated into five ecosystems and exhibits 22 different species of vegetation inherent to the region. As an extra benefit to Sirenis Premium Travelers members, a portion of the nursery is designated as the SPT Members Children Garden. Here, children can plant seeds next to rocks showing their names so that each time their families visit Sirenis, they are able to check on the plants growth.

Grand Sirenis plans to launch more campaigns throughout the year, not only to reduce their own environmental impact, but also to increase public awareness and inspire guests to contribute in protecting our environment.

In addition to all of these exciting new eco-activities, Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa offers fun for everyone with its world class Spa, lazy river, snorkel tours, 8 la carte restaurants and more. The after-party: Winter on the White Isle

Two slender, high-heeled legs protrude from a chocolate cupcake. In between, a strawberry has been provocatively placed atop a bed of whipped cream, while a slogan scrawled in neon lipstick reads: "You'll never dance alone, bitch."

As billboard campaigns go, this ad for a night out at the world's biggest super-club Privilege leaves very little to the imagination. But in a place where, stereotypically, enjoyment is measured by excess, I'd expect nothing less from Spanish island Ibiza.

Similar ads line the roads leading to clubbing hotspot (or hedonistic hellhole, depending on how you look at it) Playa d'en Bossa, like a sugary, sweet trail, attracting bees to a honey pot.

When I arrive in mid-October, though, the place is refreshingly peaceful. Flyers have been ripped from shop windows, bars have pulled down their shutters, and a plastic bag sent billowing skyward by the cool autumnal breeze is the closest thing I see to dancing in the street.

The clubbers may have packed away their glow sticks for another year but, I'm told by one resident, the winter season is when Ibiza really blossoms. There's less traffic on the roads and prices are much lower. Yet the sun still shines, with temperatures hovering at 15C in December.

"If you're not fussed about catching the clubs but still want to see spectacular sunsets, top up your tan and sample traditional Mediterranean cuisine, it's a great time to go," Cheapflights.co.uk travel expert Ben Rosier says.

Traditionally, clubs, bars, restaurants and hotels would close their doors once DJs had spun their last tunes in September. But now, several properties are staying open for longer. The new Hard Rock Hotel is taking bookings until November, while glamorous Atzaro, in the north of the island, has announced it will host guests year-round.

A 15-minute drive from grown-up beach town Santa Eularia, Atzaro is a working orange farm that's been in operation for more than a century. Ten years ago, owners the Guash family opened the property as a 24-room hotel with Ibiza's only open-air spa. Oranges are still cultivated and sold to local markets, or served as freshly squeezed juice to guests at breakfast.

Teak, linen-wrapped daybeds are spread around the vast but secluded gardens, resplendent with canopies of fragrant jasmine and striking bougainvillea.

A proliferation of Balinese statues hints at the property's spiritual, New Age leanings. Several wellbeing festivals take place throughout the year, and some attract as many as 9000 people.

Ibiza Rebranding from Hippy Haven to Luxury Destination

The hotspot for sex, drugs and dance music is looking to go from 24-hour partying to 24-karat gold

Orlando Bloompunches Justin Bieberin a club. Leonardo DiCaprio lounges on his yacht. It is all part of summer time on the Spanish island of Ibiza, famous for its A-list celebrities, world-class DJs and jam-packed, all-night parties.

Celebrities have identified the clubbing mecca as a must stop on the international party circuit at least since the 1950s when Errol Flynn used to moor his yacht Zaca and come ashore with his entourage.

But something seems to have shifted lately, according to a BBC report earlier this month in which several DJs said Ibiza has become too expensive for young people.

Im playing in Ibiza this year, only because they pay well, Afrojack told the BBC. The whole magic you used to have on Ibiza is not possible anymore because a ticket is $100 (75). I go to Mykonos, play exactly the same thing and you buy a $13 (10) ticket. They are too focused on the VIP.

With competition for the title of party island coming from Greece and Croatia and Las Vegas comeback fueled by Electronic Dance Musicand Sin Citys ability to snag top talent, Ibiza is in the midst of rebranding itself from a destination for 24-hour partying to one offering a 24-karat gold experience.

Spains so-called White Island is aiming to lengthen its season and boost its identity as a luxury destination. Think a newly improved marina for yachters, fancier restaurants and five-star hotels the only new hotels allowed on the island since 2007.

There has been a huge investment in thematic hotels aimed at the upper-end of the price range, said the Ibiza governments tourism secretary Carmen Ferrer. Its not just about the hotels, but all they offer surrounding them restaurants, water sports, music and leisure. But I think what really distinguishes the luxury offer in Ibiza is the unique lifestyle the island allows.

The clear preference for the very VIPs this year was the Ibiza Gran Hotel, which boasts the islands only casino and is sandwiched between the legendary club Pachaand restaurant-cabaret Lio, next door to the marina and cocooned in lavishness.

We have noticed that the luxury consumers are growing faster and faster, and the world of luxury involves so many services, Ibiza Gran Hotel general managerRaul Sierra said.
