British Airways Launches new Flights from London City

HARMONDSWORTH, England, May 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

British Airways is serving up a feast of six new flights from London City Airport this summer with the first of the new services taking off to Mahon in Menorca.

The airline will complete its Balearic Islands portfolio, launching flights to Mahon in Menorca. British Airways launched highly successful services to Majorca and Ibiza from the Docklands airport for the first time two years ago.

Other cities served direct from the Docklands will include Angers in the Loire Valley, Quimper in Brittany, Venice in Italy, the Isle of Man and Aberdeen

The addition of the new routes means a total of 23 destinations in the UK, Europe and the USA will be served by British Airways from London City Airport. As the airline continues to grow its network customers have more choice to more business and leisure destinations, flying on one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the business.

Luke Hayhoe, general manager commercial said: "We are very excited about the launch of the new routes, most of which are completely new destinations for London City Airport and offer our customers even more holiday choices. We're sure that these new routes coupled with British Airways' all inclusive fares and London City's unique 20 minute check-in time with luggage will be a hit this summer."

British Airways offers all inclusive fares to all destinations, which include a generous free 23kg luggage allowance, free on-line check-in and seat selection 24 hours before departure and complimentary food and drink on board.

British Airways also offers holidays from London City including holidays in Menorca. The four-star Port Ciutadella hotel in a great location on the west coast of the island and close to a selection of restaurants and shops, while the three-star Carema Club Playa aparthotel is right on the beach and offers families great value and the perfect base to explore.

In Angers, British Airways offer a range of hotels in the Loire Valley from the three-star Mercure Angers Centre Foch to the four-star de France Angers hotel which is a few minutes stroll from the famous city castle.

Fly-drive holidays to Quimper make discovering the Brittany region even easier. The historic town is picturesque with grand buildings and museums and medieval gardens and a great place to begin a holiday to the region.

Electronic dance music is, no doubt, an international phenomenon. Last years Electric Zoo festival at Randalls Island Park, for example, brought in 85,000 attendees including visitors from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

But its the jet-setting DJs themselves hitting a different city night after night, bouncing from club to club and festival to festival who globe-trot like no others. Electric Zoo, back for its fourth year on Labor Day Weekend (August 31-Sept. 2), put us in touch with some of the biggest names on its 2012 lineup to talk about a life where the beats and plane rides never end.

Tiesto spins at his favorite club, LIV in Miami.

TIESTO

Whats been your favorite spot to travel for work?

Id have to say Miami, of course. Thats why Ive named my new compilation Club Life: Volume Two Miami after the city. It has my favorite club to play in LIV as well as incredible restaurants, amazing architecture and so much glamour.

Whats been your favorite spot to travel for leisure?

Ibiza is a pretty special place for me to go. Ive been going there every summer since the 90s, and the island is a perfect place for relaxation and of course a lot of fun. More than any place I go to, it embodies the spirit of Club Life. I cant wait to get out there for the start of the season at the end of May when I start my new residency at Pacha.

Where are you most excited about going in the future?

The beginners guide to Bali

ANGELA WALKER

ISLAND OF THE GODS: What to do if you're planning a getaway to the colour and chaos that is Bali?

With direct flights from New Zealand starting next month, Bali has never been easier to get to.

Where to stay

If you really must stay at Kuta Beach, home of beer, massages, Bintang singlets, tawdry bars and that singular breed of Aussie tourist known as the Bali bogan, head for the oasis of peace and calm that is the Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana. This nearly new hotel, right across the road from the famous beach, is set among beautifully landscaped lawns, gardens and pools and, indeed, is so relaxing it's hardly surprising to discover there's no alarm clock in the cool and airy rooms. The day spa is sensational and the rooftop pool divine, especially at 6am when the rest of Kuta is just waking up.

The Novotel Bali Benoa in Nusa Dua is about a 25-minute (on a good day) drive from Kuta and only 15km from the airport. It's one of the older hotels, but it's lovely - a big open-air lobby in traditional Balinese style, well- established tropical gardens and direct access on to Tanjung Benoa beach. There's regular hotel style accommodation but it's the private villas that are the stand- out - each with its own pool, garden, partly open-air bathroom and outdoor living area, where you can stay hydrated with the complimentary soft drinks, beer and water that are restocked daily. And all for less than NZ$330 a night, breakfast included. You can pay a lot more for villa accommodation in Bali so this is a great deal and it's perfect for a romantic getaway. If you're travelling with children, bad luck, but the hotel also offers a kids' club.

WHAT TO DO

Chef Heinz von Holzen runs endurance marathons, cycles across deserts and scares the be- jesus out of the guests attending his justifiably famous Bumbu Bali cooking school. He is, it seems, fearless and fearsome in equal parts. But this Swiss chef with a classical French background and Heston Blumenthal obsession is a hero in these parts for his work in recording and promoting Balinese cuisine and ingredients. During the day-long cooking classes you'll visit the somewhat confronting Jimbaran village market and nearby fish market then spend several hours in the open-air kitchen in the serene garden compound of Bumbu Bali. We all took turns in preparing scores of dishes, including basic spice pastes, grilled chicken in banana leaf, satays, a green papaya salad, pork in sweet soy sauce and the unexpectedly luscious snack of sweet corn with grated coconut. Then we all sat down to eat them. A great - and fascinating - day's work. Prices are $US85 with the market visit and $US75 without.

Dating back to the 11th century and sitting on sheer cliffs 70 metres above the pounding waves of the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu temple lives up to its reputation as one of Bali's most spectacular sites. To visit, you need to pay a small entry fee (about $2.60) and, for religious reasons, don sarongs and sashes (the colours are quite dashing). The temple proper is open only to Hindu worshippers, but a walk through the gardens and along the clifftop paths will more than satisfy. Watch out for the resident monkeys though - they'll happily strip you of jewellery, sunglasses and eyeglasses so hide them away before you go in. From Kuta it's about a one-hour drive, which you can do on a bus tour or you can take a taxi - just make sure you arrange with your driver for a return journey or it could turn out to be a long day. The return trip shouldn't cost more than $40-$50.

Spring for a travel deal in Europe

You don't need to break the bank to take a summer vacation in Greece or Portugal. Kate Maxwell of jetsetter.com reveals the best spots in Europe to visit when you're trying to save.

By Kate Maxwell, Jetsetter.com

Fancy a European fling? Nows a great time to go. The European debt crisis is keeping the natives at home, so hotels throughout the continent are luring travelers with lower prices. The dollar is strong, the lines are shorter at bold-faced attractions and there are deals at restaurants. One caveat: Airfare prices havent got cheaper, but theyre typically hundreds of dollars less in May than in summer months. Here are five destination suggestions:

Athens, GreeceWhy: Greece has been hit hardest by the debt crisis, and hotels are hurting. Choose an independent property rather than part of a chain, dont be afraid of calling the hotel direct to negotiate, and keep an eye on the political and economic situation in the Greek capital by enrolling in the State Departments STEP program.

Lisbon, PortugalWhy: Portugal is the poorest country in Western Europe, and the low cost of living means prices are low on everything from restaurants and hotels to attractions and transportation. Lisbon is the continents second-oldest capital after Athens, and it has the looks to match: Its a charming visual time warp with medieval village neighborhoods and vintage trams and because its built on a series of hills you get scenic views from just about everywhere.

Where to stay: The five-star VIP Grand Lisboa Hotel & Spa, a hotel converted from the former head office of National Portuguese Television, has rates from $105 per night. Positioned between the historic center and the business district, it has a Zen atmosphere, state-of-the art technology, and those panoramic views.

Brussels, BelgiumWhy: Chocolate, Tin Tin and art nouveau architecture Brussels is a seriously underrated destination that has enough to keep everyone happy.

Where to stay: The Tintin Family Affair package costs just $200 for not one but two rooms at the Hotel Amigo, representing a saving of 40 percent. The package includes 50 percent off meals and drinks for children under 12, family tickets to the Herg Museum, a Tintin map of Brussels and more.
