Alex Zane may be a well-known music-lover, but he is happy to avoid Ibiza's sprawling nightclubs

He may be a well-known music-lover having hosted high-profile shows on MTV, XFM and NME Radio.

But Alex Zane reveals he more than happy to shun the masses of Ibiza's hard-partying tourists, booming beats and sprawling nightclubs to take a trip to the north of the island, which is littered with breath-taking beaches.

The 35-year-old presenter says the Spanish island has 'two characters' explaining the tranquil villages and peaceful orange groves are just a bike-ride away and offer the opportunity to 'live like a local'.

Club Filipino Greenhills San Juan Overview Centennial Function Room Birthday Party. Club Filipino was the first exclusive social club in the Philippines founded by elite members of the Philippine society (including Spanish mestizos and rich Filipino aristocrats). Established in 1898 as an elite Filipino country gentlemen's organization, the club has developed a reputation for being a meeting ground for Filipino political progressives throughout its history. Located between North Greenhills subdivision and Greenhills Shopping Center in the city of San Juan, Metro Manila, it has been the site of many famous political events and happenings in the history of post-Martial Law era in the Philippines. "Club" is pronounced "Cloob" in the Spanish fashion. It was originally called as Club Filipino Independiente, later called Club Internationale, then Club ("cloob") Filipino. Today the club's amenities include a swimming pool, tennis, badminton and squash courts, bowling alleys, outdoor restaurant, salon, and "Kalayaan Hall," an indoor events/reception room. Club Filipino was notable in recent years as the site of many political milestones that shaped the history of modern Philippines. It served as the inaugural venue for President Corazon Aquino as the 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines during the People Power Revolution in 1986. This was also where the massive expose of Governor Luis Chavit Singson on an alleged illegal gambling (jueteng) payroll involving then President Joseph Erap Estrada happened in 2000. On September 9 of 2009, the only son of former President Corazon Aquino, Senator Benigno Aquino III announced his bid at Club Filipino to run as presidential candidate of the Liberal Party of the Philippines in the 2010 Philippine National Elections. Warehouse mega-nightclubs in DC disappearing

WASHINGTON (AP) Inside Northeast Washington's shuttered Love nightclub, the swanky marble floors are still intact, granite still tops the sprawling bars and mahogany paneling still conveys the ambience of one of the city's most high-end hot spots.

But the four-level "mega-club" a former warehouse with a capacity in the thousands was on the auction block after closing in October. Despite the luxury nightspot's storied history, the wide range of bidders interested in buying the building expressed one common theme: Its time as a club is over.

The end of Love marks the third mega-club in a year to hit the skids amid a wave of redevelopment in which the District of Columbia's once-blighted urban landscape that provided fertile ground for the DJ and dance scene has drastically changed.

"There is a shifting tide in the D.C. nightlife arena," said Skip Coburn, president of the D.C. Nightlife Association, noting that the popularity of larger-than-life nightclubs is waning with investors and owners.

"It used to be that an owner could lease a crappy building in a warehouse district at a reasonable rate and put a million into renovations to have a nice bar and nice decor," Coburn said. "As development has eliminated all those crappy areas in town the problem is that everybody has doubled or tripled their leases when they've come up for renewal."

Rents in once-cheap warehouse districts are increasing. Condos, apartments and hotels are sprouting up next to long-established mega-clubs creating tension between the club operators and new residents who don't want booming bass to be the soundtrack to their lives. The heyday of the mega-club seems to be nearing an end.

Love is situated in a neighborhood on the cusp of transition.

At one end of the Okie Street block the club occupies, a homeless man recently erected a fortress of cardboard and wool blankets. The surrounding pavement stinks of urine. But on the other end of the block stands the art deco Hecht Co. warehouse slated for a renovation into luxury apartments, an organic supermarket and a fitness center.

The company rehabilitating the Hecht warehouse, Douglas Jemal's Douglas Development Corp., bought Love for $5 million in a bankruptcy auction this month.

Asked about his interest in the nightclub, Jemal brusquely responded, "I'm developing in the neighborhood. That's my interest."

Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision win grants Vienna gay tourism boost

Sitting in the Cafe Savoy, a venerable gay institution just off the Naschmarkt market, Brian Melaugh, an Irish tourist, said: "Vienna has a pretty formal image but it also has a good gay scene. It offers everything from simple bars to sex clubs."

"Lots of older gays come to Vienna, he told AFP. Younger ones go to places like Ibiza.

In particular, people from nearby eastern Europe find it a safe haven, says Boyan Dervishev, the manager of Cafe Savoy who arrived in Vienna from his native Bulgaria 26 years ago.

Gay visitors from eastern Europe appreciate the "normality," he said. "If they embarrass themselves, it's not a scandal.

The city hosts several gay events including the five-day Vienna Pride, which this year culminates on June 14 with a march of around 100,000 members of the LGBT community.

In addition, Vienna city hall hosts the Life Ball, an annual event that over the past 20 or so years has become one of the world's best-known AIDS charity events.

This year the extravaganza takes place on May 31 and is due to be attended by Bill Clinton, the former US president and Ricky Martin, the singer.

Next years Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Austria after the country's first win since Udo Juergens, who won in 1966 with "Merci, Cherie".

Viennas best bars for gay travellers

Caf Savoy, Linke Wienzeile 36, 1060 Vienna, savoy.at (coffeehouse, open at night as well) is the pick of the bunch, stands out for its excellent location right on the world-famous Naschmarkt, with its ostentatiously ornate baroque interior. During summer you can enjoy a coffee outside on the sidewalk as you indulge in a spot of people watching and it opens at night as well. Inside a pair of gigantic single-plate mirrors provide a focal point you wont find any bigger anywhere except in the Palais de Versailles.

Sherrie Hewson’s Benidorm: My Kind of Town

If you go there early in the holiday season, take both summer and winter clothes. In April, and even in May, I pack boots, jumpers and coats because, although it might be hot in the day, it can turn very cold at night. Make sure you wear high factor suncream. Theres a strong wind from the mountains, which can disguise the heat, and you can get badly burnt.

'Benidorms bad, brash reputation is entirely unjustified,' says Sherrie Hewson

What do you miss when youre away?

The clean, gentle air and the extraordinary mountains, particularly the spectacular Puig Campana, which you see from most windows, wherever you are. I call them sleeping giants because you can identify the outlines of heads, bodies and feet in the rock.

Puig Campana

Whats the first thing you do upon arrival?

Take off any dark, black clothes Im wearing. At home, I wear a lot of black so I change into sunny colours when I arrive: bright orange, pink and yellow. Benidorm is awake 24 hours a day so at 6am when Im done up to the nines in character, Im passing drag queens in the street and feel very under-dressed!

Wheres the best place to stay?

I stay at The Meli (melia.com; 0034 96 681 37 10), which has two lovely swimming pools. But there are excellent small boutique hotels in the Old Town such as Hotel Fetiche (fetichebenidorm.com; 96 618 32 46). Get up early and walk those wonderful streets before anyone else arrives. Its like going back in time to the old Spain I knew as a girl.

Wheres the best place for lunch?
