Prostitution cooperative organized on Spanish island of Ibiza

IBIZA, Spain, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Prostitutes on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza can now join a cooperative that provides medical care and allows them to pay taxes and receive state benefits.

The Sealeer Cooperative, the first of its kind in Spain, is organized as a non-profit organization, ThinkSpain reported. Maria Jose Lopez Armesto said it took her two years to get approval for the group.

"Behind every prostitute is a hungry family, usually with children to keep fed and clothed," she said. "Society forces these girls into prostitution because, if they do not have the opportunity to get a normal, everyday job, they have to do something to earn a living."

Women pay 300 euros ($406) to join. The fee is refundable if they stay in the group for four years or for a reason like finding another job or returning to their home country. To join, prostitutes must be at least 18 and not working for a pimp or madam, ThinkSpain reported.

Paying taxes means their prostitution earnings will help them get a state pension when they retire and be eligible for other benefits like maternity pay and sick leave.

Spanish sun draws record tourist numbers

Record numbers of foreign tourists poured into Spain in 2013 to bake on sunny beaches but a new challenge lies ahead: luring them to holiday spots inland.

An unprecedented 60.4 million foreign tourists came to Spain last year, spending an estimated 45.1 billion euros ($61 billion), according to industry association Exceltur.

The visitors came mostly from Britain, Germany and France, with a jump in Russian tourist numbers, too, it said.

"It was a really good year which gives us a lot of hope after some difficult years," Exceltur president Amancio Lopez told AFP.

Indeed, tourism is pivotal to the Spanish economy, which emerged in the third quarter last year from a two-year recession, still dragged down by a 26-percent unemployment rate.

"We think tourism should be an engine to help improve the Spanish economy, as it always has been," Lopez said.

But Spain believes it can better exploit its attractions.

"Obviously, the most sought-after destinations are for sun and beach holidays whereas urban tourism has suffered a bit," Lopez said.

"I think Spain has a richness not only for sun and beach holidays but also for cultural, gastronomic and lifestyle holidays," he said.

Though industry estimates have yet to be confirmed by government numbers due Tuesday, Spain clearly enjoyed a boom in 2013.

Prostitutes in Spain Form Country’s First Sex Worker Union and Register to Pay Taxes

Taking a page from other European countries like Belgium and the Netherlands, some prostitutes in the Spanish island of Ibiza have formed a completely legal workers union.

According to reports, 11 women have registered as part of the union, known as the Sealeer Cooperative, and will now be recognized as tax-paying, working members of society who get paid to have sex.

"We are pioneers," said Maria Jos Lpez, who herself is not a sex worker but did register as a member so she could be a voluntary representative for the group. "We are the first cooperative in Spainthat can give legal cover to the girls."

"Just as they regulate the hotels and restaurants to make sure all theworkers are registered, they should also see that the girls are comfortableand legalized, said Lpez.

Prostitution isnt illegal in Spain, but until now, it has not been regulated, so workers say they are trying to do this so that women can be protected from exploitation and unsafe situations.

[The union] is a way to give the women independence from the gangs of pimps, for women who choose to exercise this profession said judge, former employment lawyer, and advisor for the Sealeer Cooperative Gloria Poyatos. I think that something is changing. A debate in society is beginning on whether or not to regulate prostitution.

Others, however, disagree with a union formation and regulation of prostitution. Ignacio Arsuaga, president of conservative group HazteOir, says that regulation will not do anything to stop people from exploiting women for sex.

In this case we are talking about a minority of prostitutes with supposed liberty, but in reality in most cases they do not have real freedom to choose, said Arsuaga to news agency AFP. Regulating prostitution is harmful for victims who are exploited, for sexual slaves.
