Celebrate Picasso’s Birthday in Spain

LONDON, October 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

25 October 2012 marks 130thbirthday of Picasso

Spain expects increase in visitor numbers to coincide with celebrations

Thomas Cook offer range of Spanish breaks for travellers

It's just over 130 years since the birth of Picasso and many admirers will head to Spain this autumn to join in the celebrations on the 25 October, leading travel operators Thomas Cook have suggested.

Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881 but lived for many years in Barcelona until the political upheavals of the Spanish Civil war in the 1930s forced him into exile. The Spanish artistic tradition extends from the mainland to the islands and many visitors are expected to take advantage of Ibiza holidays to celebrate his connection with Spain.

To help travellers find inspiration for artistic holidays in Spain, Thomas Cook look at some of the best destinations for holidaymakers to visit:

Ibiza

Ibiza holidays are the perfect option for art lovers. The Marta Torres Gallery in Ibiza Old Town has an international reputation and artists who have exhibited here include Julia Ribas.

Whoa! See Matthew McConaughey’s Scary, Three-Month Slimdown

At least nobody can accuse him of not showing enough commitment to his craft.

Matthew McConaughey has been working hard to slim down to play AIDS activist Ron Woodruff in the upcoming Dallas Buyer's Club -- and his shocking, gaunt new look has some fans wondering if he's taken his efforts a little too far.

On Sunday, the 42-year-old star, who has reportedly lost 30 pounds so far for the role, recently caused a stir when he stepped out in Austin, Texas looking emaciated alongside his mom, Mary.

McConaughey's movie makeover has been both dramatic and rapid: In July, the Magic Mike actor posed on the red carpet alongside his new wife Camila Alves, looking his usual fit self. One month later, the star's newly-bony torso was on display during a mid-August trip to Ibiza, Spain, and since then, McConaughey has continued his intense quest to shed weight.

On August 15, the Lincoln Lawyer actor opened up to Us Weekly at an NYC event about his approach to the ultra-dramatic role.

"I'm playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn't. For me, it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing," he explained, adding that he's been eating "small amounts" of high-protein, low-carbohydrate food. "I'll get down to the weight I need to get to. I'm on my way, and it's what I need to do for the job."

Paul Clough: Sixth holiday Briton dies in balcony fall on family holiday on Menorca

By Mail On Sunday Reporter

PUBLISHED: 16:00 EST, 6 October 2012 | UPDATED: 06:03 EST, 7 October 2012

A man on holiday with his family has become the sixth Briton this year to be killed in hotel falls on Spains Balearic Islands.

Paul Clough, 41, died in hospital from his injuries last week after plunging from the balcony of his third-floor room in the resort of Ciutadella, on Menorcas western coast.

Police on the island are investigating Mr Cloughs death but a senior officer said: All the indications are that this was a tragic accident.

Tragedy: Mr Clough was on holiday with his family in Ciutadella, Menorca when he accidentally fell off a hotel balcony

It appears Mr Clough fell through a gap in the balcony and into a garden below, after which he was rushed to hospital with multiple fractures and chest injuries. After his condition worsened, he died last Sunday.

Four Britons have died this year in Magaluf, Majorca, while another died in St Antonio, Ibiza. In total, 12 people have been killed in hotel falls in the Balearic Islands this year.

Adam Atkinson, 20, Castleford, West Yorkshire, died after falling off the balcony at the HM Martinique hotel in Magaluf, Majorca in April.
