Sharing spirit makes for a great holiday

Smart holidaymakers are swapping houses, saving accommodation costs during trips overseas and within New Zealand.

One online exchange describes it as "the best-kept secret of these tough economic times".

In New Zealand, HomeLink's membership has grown from 80 to more than 400 over 13 years. They are part of an international membership of 14,000 offering homes all over the world.

Nelson has 27 active members, who have made repeated home exchange trips overseas, and in return Nelson is a popular destination among foreign visitors.

HomeLink NZ director John Martin said the scheme brought between 1000 to 1200 people to New Zealand, and they often stayed for more than a month.

He countered criticism that they were taking business away from commercial accommodation providers. "I suppose we are competition to some extent, but I don't think these people would come here if not offered a home.

"These people travel up and down the country. We believe we help New Zealand tourism by supporting other tourist operators."

The home swap idea is also catching on within New Zealand.

HomeLink Local was set up 18 months ago for home swaps within New Zealand and Australia, with a $130 fee, $100 cheaper than the international fee.

Martin said it was doing well and growing, attracting people who no longer wanted to travel long-distance to Europe or the United States, as well as those who were tentative about the scheme and were trying it out.

Ibiza, Multicultural

Ibiza, a historic harbour, a cultural melting pot, a stone vessel, a market of the world a magnet for romantic people and artists from all over the planet, who find in Ibiza the freedom, the spaces and the inspiration they need to give life to their projects.

Ibiza is like a chameleon, adapting itself to every traveller and fulfilling their needs: quietness, crowds, balance, madness, nature, sea, romanticism, inspiration, sport or unforgettable sunsets

The quiet and unchanging environment in the countryside contrasts with the cities and certain towns cosmopolitan atmosphere. Cutting-edge trends are displayed in Ibizas shops simultaneously to the most avant-garde cities in the world. In fact, some of them are generated in the island. Adlib fashion, for example, emerges from Ibizas feeling of freedom, a freedom that works as a muse for most artists in the island.

This mixture of feelings that our visitors experience, together with a wide range of services and tourist facilities are the key to Ibiza's authenticity. Walkers, night lovers, thinkers, adventurers, loners, treasure hunters, music and sea lovers Once experienced, Ibiza becomes the destination where all your dreams come true...

Each season brings us a different and surprising Ibiza. Intense light and mild temperatures are present all year round. Be amazed by the beauty of the almond trees blossom in February, and contemplate the islands fields covered in white. Spring brings again a bursting of flowers around the island. Enjoy the refreshing feeling of bathing in a beach in August or the pleasure of eating fresh fish under the sun of January at the terrace of a caf right on the seashore.

Ibiza can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons. The island offers a wide range of cultural activities all year round, and enough tourist resources to make your holidays an unforgettable experience, regardless of the time of the year when you chose to visit us.

Thousand-year-old olive trees, pine woods stirred by the breeze, plains of full-blossomed almond trees shining under the moonlight Ibiza is nice and warm, an open and generous island full of smiles, light, inspiration, and centenary traditions. Immerse in its History as you enter Dalt Vilas fortification walls, the defensive towers and each of its whitewashed churches.

Ibiza's main highlights are its landscape and its history. However, it is Ibizas authenticity what turns the island into a unique place, a wonderful setting bathed by the intense Mediterranean light, a place where travellers feel time has stopped. Ibiza is a destination of excitement, where simple things can be enjoyed: quietness, nature, the scent of the sea, a reunion a dreamland for those who wish to enjoy each and every moment of their lives.

Nature is without question another main asset. With an area of 572 square kilometres, Ibiza offers 210 kilometres of beaches that can be enjoyed during all seasons, thanks to its warm temperatures and 2,948 hours of sun per year.

Ibiza Travel Guide and Tourist Information: Ibiza, Balearic …

Ibiza has a reputation as a party island, but there is much more to this popular destination than just its excellent nightclubs. The island is the closest of all the Balearic islands to mainland Spain and has a 200 km / 125 mile coastline, with many small coves and over 50 stunning beaches. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is the proud island capital and resides on the south-easterly coast, where it enjoys a protected harbourside setting.

Eivissa has grown to become an enchanting tourism resort close to the Platja de Figueretes beachfront and has become a focal spot for nightlife in Ibiza, and also offers a useful Tourist Information Centre on the Passeig des Moll. Nearby, the Passeig de Vara de Rey is an especially scenic promenade and a good place for sunset views.

Hotels on the island range from convenient Ibiza budget lodging to luxury accommodation, both on the seafront and inland. Finding resort accommodation can be difficult, especially during the peak tourist season (July to August) and therefore booking Ibiza holidays ahead is advisable and virtually compulsory in high season. Do always bear in mind that hotel discounts may be available for advance bookings. The other popular alternative for accommodation on the island is to rent a private holiday villa for your stay. Villas range from pleasant and homely to sheer luxury, and for larger groups this is often a cheaper option. There is a good choice of Ibiza villas to rent during your holiday, while for season workers there's also a good selection of very cheap workers apartments for rent in San Antonio.

Ibiza Town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the whole of Europe and is the largest and most beautiful town on the island, being home to a stunning Spanish cathedral and many fabulous restaurants and chic bars. Nearby there are also countless old stone cottages on the island's hilly countryside and walking in this area is popular.

The beautiful island of Ibiza boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine each year. Ibiza is blessed by a hot Mediterranean sun that is complemented by cool, refreshing sea breezes, and the winters are quite mild. This appealing climate, combined with numerous excellent beaches with fine golden sand, clear blue seas and exceptional nightlife, means that Ibiza is understandably a popular destination for tourists. The pace of life for locals on this popular Balearic island still remains relaxed and moves at a gentle pace, gradually beginning to embrace the tourism trade. Ibiza offers so much for the visiting holidaymaker, both young and old.
