The crackdown on suspected illegal immigrants is working, senior officials said Tuesday ahead of President Donald Trump's visit to Yuma, Arizona.

Arrests of suspected illegal immigrants are up 43 percent in the first half of 2017 from the same period last year, Department of Homeland Security officials said. The DHS branch Immigration and Customs Enforcement made 91,000 arrests during the first seven months of the year, they said.

"Going from 5 miles of fence to 60 miles of fence on the Yuma border made a huge difference," a senior DHS official said in a conference call with media, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Increased enforcement, including this year's extension of the fence, resulted in an 83 percent drop in illegal border crossings near Yuma since 2007, the official said. Up to 800 immigrants illegally crossed the border in the area every day in 2005 and 2006, the official said.

The DHS officials said 126,472 apprehensions have been made in the first half of this year, a 46 percent increase from the first half of 2016.

Away from the border, removals in the interior of the country are up 32 percent this year from last year, the officials said.

"There are 500,000 immigration fugitives and criminal aliens that ICE cannot reach or arrest" due to available resources and sanctuary city protections, another senior DHS official said on the call.

As a candidate, Trump pledged to crack down on illegal immigration and build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to deter people from coming into the country. The wall expansion has proven slow, and Mexico's president has rejected Trump's call that Mexico pay for the barrier.

Trump has repeatedly cited arrest statistics as evidence that his strategy is working.

The high costs of illegal immigrants filing deportation appeals in federal courts are paid by U.S. taxpayers, a little-known fact but a major driver in the escalation of cases that are clogging the legal docket, according to experts.

"Aliens should not be given more rights and better conditions than U.S. citizens," said Hans von Spakovsky, an expert on immigration and a former member of the Federal Election Commission.

Decrying the special treatment courts provide to illegals, he told a Center for Immigration Studies panel on Tuesday that unlike American citizens, undocumented immigrants don't have to pay most court costs, such as for records and transcripts, and the $110 filing fee is typically waived.

"American taxpayers are subsidizing the appeals of all these cases," said von Spakovsky.

He said that nearly all deportation decisions from the Board of Immigration Appeals are challenged. "That's because there's no cost to the illegal aliens. The filing fee is very low, to file an appeal it's $110," he said, citing a judge's recent congressional testimony. "However in a majority of cases that fee is waived," he added.

"Second the alien isn't charged for copies of the records or charged for copies of the transcripts, all of these are costs are paid for by the Department of Justice, and that means American taxpayers. So American taxpayers are subsidizing the appeals costs of all of theses cases, something that does not happen if an ordinary U.S. citizen is involved in a federal lawsuit," said von Spakovsky.

"There is absolutely nothing to stop the filing of frivolous and meritless cases," he added.

The Center for Immigration Studies panel addressed several other issues, including its recent report on the lack of immigration judges and the resulting case backlog.

Currently 334 judges are handling 610,000 cases, an average of 1,800 each.

Immigration Judge Lawrence O. Burman, also the secretary treasurer of the National Association of Immigration Judges, said he has a backlog of 6,000-7,000 cases, so many he's been told to stop scheduling more past 2020. As a result, he has set up a second, post-2020 calendar where he is penciling in future cases.

"I'm not going to live long enough" to get through them all, he joked.

A dispute over illegal immigration has turned ugly in Westchester, with a leader of the Board of Legislators accusing County Executive Rob Astorino of acting like a Nazi.

Majority Leader Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining) took issue with comments Astorino made while vetoing a bill that would have protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.

Astorino deried the bill as a Sanctuary County plan.

Its the classic `Big Lie technique. All clever Nazis use it, Borgia said in an Aug. 16 email obtained by The Post.

In the email, Borgia was looking for votes to override Astorinos veto.

The legislation would have blocked county police and other local officials from communicating with federal authorities solely on civil immigration matters.

It came on the heels of President Trump and US Attorney Jeff Sessions push to deport illegal immigrants.

Supporters insist the measure complies with federal law and argue that county law enforcement officials should not act as immigration officials.

But Astorino, a Republican, said such a law would hinder law enforcement and jeopardize the countys federal funding.

Astorino said the bill endangers public safety, violates federal law, infringes upon long-established principles of law enforcement cooperation and jeopardizes millions in federal public safety grants.

While he said hes working on an executive order to ease fears of undocumented immigrants that they will be deported if they report crimes or seek medical assistance, all bets are off for those who are arrested for crimes.

If you end up in jail for committing a crime, and youre not here legally, were not providing a sanctuary for you, Astorino said.

Borgia defended her comments when contacted by The Post.

Perhaps I should have been more clear: the `big lie was a classic propaganda technique used very successfully by the Nazis, she said. This is in no way a sanctuary county bill, as it fully complies with federal law. You can call something by the wrong name again and again and again but that does not make it more accurate. My dog is not a cat, even if I feed him catnip and call him `kitty every day for 10 years.

Soccer star Lukas Podolski is considering legal action against Breitbart News for using a photo of him in an article about illegal immigration, according to a new report.

BBC News reports Podolski, who starred on the German national team during their championship run in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has consulted with his lawyer about the matter.

The far-right website posted astory,titled Spanish Police Crack Gang Moving Migrants on Jet-Skis, on Friday with a photo of Podolski riding a jet-ski as the lead image.

Breitbart has since replaced the photo and added a correction to the bottom of their story.

A previous version of this story included an image of Lukas Podolski on a jet ski. This image appeared as an illustration of a person on a jet ski, the editors note reads. Breitbart London wishes to apologize to Mr. Podolski. There is no evidence Mr. Podolski is either a migrant gang member,nor being human trafficked.

We wish Mr.Podolski well in his recently announced international retirement.
