Illegal immigrants now have ringtone alerting them from deportation – Fox News

A Chicago hotel and restaurant workers union has created a cellphone ringtone that's meant to curb arrest and deportation of immigrants.

Unite Here Local 1 launched the Spanish-language ringtone on its website over the weekend, and advertisements promoting it are planned throughout the month.

The ringtone aims to let immigrants know they have the right to remain silent and ask for an attorney if immigration agents arrest them.

"[The union is] using technology to notify every immigrant in this city: you've got rights," organizing director Angel Castillo told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The jingle, in Spanish, says: If immigration comes to arrest you, keep calm. You have the right not to sign anything and not to say anything. You have the right to remain silent, also the right to ask for an attorney.

The campaign comes amid stepped up federal actions and policies implemented by President Donald Trump. Several immigrant rights groups have stepped up similar know-your-rights training.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that the Columbus City Council voted to adopt an executive order issued by Mayor Andrew J. Ginther in early February.

After he signed the executive order, Mayor Ginther told those at a press conference, To all of you I say, Columbus is your home. The mayors executive order provided that the city will actively support, to the greatest extent practicable, the placement or settlement in this jurisdiction of aliens eligible to be admitted to the United States as refugees. The room was full of leaders from the citys refugee and immigrant communities, the local NBC affiliate reported.

The mayors order dictates:

Although the policy prevents the City or employees from using any city property for detecting or apprehending those illegally in the country, or the use of local taxpayer resources for the enforcement of federal immigration policy, city officials do not declare Columbus a sanctuary city, reported the Dispatch. [T]hey dont want the city a target for President Donald Trump, who has threatened federal funding for cities that adopt the label, the article written Monday afternoon about the ordinance and city officials reported.

The president of the city council, Zach Klein was reported to say that The permanence of city code transcends every mayor.

We decided not to focus on labels and focus more on the substance, he added.

The ordinance will be effective after 30 days.

Trump’s Tough Talk On Illegal Immigration Forces Many Into … – CBS Los Angeles

June 1, 2017 11:31 PM

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) President Donald Trumps tough stance on illegal immigration has forced many undocumented immigrants to live in the shadows.

A mother of six who agreed to talk to CBS2s Jennifer Kastner only if her identity was not revealed is among them.

For the purpose of this story, she will be referred to as Lisa. It took months before she agreed to be interviewed andshare her daily life, which is filled with fear and anxiety.

Lisa said every time she and her family go anywhere, they always pray in the car first thatthey wont get stopped by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Kastner rode with Lisa as she went to pick up three of her children from school. On the way back, they went to a 99 Cents Only store to pick up some items. All their stops are usually quick to buy only basic necessities.

Lisa said she has a license, auto registration, insurance and no criminal record. But she still panics when she is on the road and does not take her kids to a park or anywhere else where they can run the risk of being detained and eventually deported.

The 38-year-old mother said her network of undocumented mothers are keenly aware if immigration officers are in the neighborhood as they keep each other informed of ICE activities.

According to ICE, the majority of target fugitives have serious criminal backgrounds. But agents alsoarrest undocumented immigrants who have no criminal records, which has been fueling fears that families are being torn apart solely over illegal status in the United States.

We are good people. We want to do good stuff in this country and have better life, Lisa said.

Lisas husband is also in the country illegally. The couple illegally crossed from Mexico almost 20 years ago. They and their six children, who were born in the U.S., are temporarily living in a motel room.

He works overnights as a cook while she cares for their kids. They said they are practicing Mormons, pay taxes and live modestly.

Kastner first met the couple in March at the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, wherethey took weekly immigrants-rights workshop and received a red card, which shows theirconstitutional right to remain silent and not have a home searched unless there is a warrant.

According to the consulate, attendance there drastically soared since Trump became president.

Lisa and her husbands visits to the consulate came soon after theyrevealed to their children about their illegal status.

The couple said they have heard a lot about families being torn apart as a result of deportation and did not want the same to happen to them.

We heard a lot of stories, you know, they took those parents and the kids they left behind. We dont want that for our kids, the husband said.

The couples 8-year-old daughter said she often cries in the schools restroom because she constantly worries about the possibility of her parents being deported.

Im afraid that when school is over, I dont see them again. And I have to go to the orphanage, the girl said as she trembled.

The girl and her five siblings have never met their grandparents, who live in Mexico, because the children do not have the necessary papers needed to cross.

The family says it breaks their hearts. But trying to live the American dream does not come without sacrifice.

Unemployed Americans: It Would Be Easier For Us To Find A Job With Less Illegal Immigration – Townhall

While the economic report for May was not as strong as it should be, we still added 138,000 jobs. Consumer confidence, which reached a nine-year high post 2016 election, has dipped slightly but remains at very healthy levels. Small business owners confidence also reached its highest levels since 2007. Yet, what about those people who havent been able to find a job? Well, politically, they favor Hillary Clinton, but want less illegal immigration and Obamacare out of their lives. Second, they havent succumbed to doom and gloom. Though they may still be in the waiting lines, 92 percent are hopeful. Express Employment Professionals, a headhunting organization, released a survey last month that polled 1,500 unemployed Americans over the age of 18 from March 14 to April 6 to gauge their feelings on the current economic climate.

They noted that 33 percent of this group agreed with the statement "Ive completely given up on looking for a job, which is down from 43 percent in 2016, 40 percent in 2015, and 47 percent in 2014. Also, more blame themselves for being unemployed than the factors impacting the economy. The poll found that 50 percent took responsibility for their situation, while 26 percent blamed the economy. The group noted this is part of a trend. Thirty-four percent blamed the economy in 2016, 37 percent in 2015, and 45 percent in 2014.

Bob Funk, the CEO for Express Pros, said in a statement that while hes alarmed that one-third of the American workforce has said theyve given up, there are signs of a positive trend from previous years; fewer have given up, more are hopeful, fewer blame the economy and fewer are unemployed due to layoffs. Funk was the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Concerning those who said they were jobless because of layoffs, 22 percent was the figure for 2017, down 23 percent in 2016, 28 percent in 2015, and 36 percent in 2014.

Now, in terms of politics, the unemployed favored Hillary over Trump in a 35/25 split. Thirty-four percent did not vote. Yet, even with unemployed America tilting towards Clinton, they want Obamacare gone by a 57/43 margin. Also, a substantial majority also thought that a crackdown on illegal immigration would help them find work by a 58/42 margin. Concerning whether government should spend more on a jobs program or cut corporate tax rates to spur job creation, more government spending is preferred but by a slim 52/48 margin. Its almost down the middle on that question.

Yet, one troubling indicator is the direction of the country; 40 percent of the unemployed said we were heading down the right path compared to 60 percent who disagreed. At the same time, while these voters broke for Hillary, theyre more aligned with Donald Trump on immigration and health care, which are two huge issues facing the country today. There are many inroads with these voters on economic issues and if Democrats craft a populist, job creating-centric agenda over the next couple of yearsthese people will vote for them. As Real Clear Politics Sean Trende has said in prior discussions about elections and demographics, there are many ways to skin the electoral cat. Republicans resonate with this group on illegal immigrants and Obamacare, while Democrats could gain traction with a serious job program. For now, the political Left seems more worried about Russia and whether were all going to die from global warming now that were withdrawing from a non-binding agreement with Europe. So, seriousness is not a quality visible in todays Democratic Party at present.
