60 talk radio heavyweights take on illegal immigration – Washington Times

It could get noisy. Beginning Wednesday, more than 60 talk radio hosts from around the country will converge on the nations capital for the 11th annual Hold Their Feet to the Fire, a broadcast event sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform or FAIR for short.

The hosts include Lars Larson, Frank Gaffney, Phil Valentine, Mike Siegel, Wayne Dupree, Bruce Elliott, Armstrong Williams, Larry OConnor, Tom Shattuck, Joyce Kaufman and Rick Hamada who journeyed all the way from Hawaii to appear. Every one of the hosts will be broadcasting live from a temporary radio row site just blocks from the U.S. Capitol, their shows aired through nationwide syndication or from their home stations. Michelle Malkin is among the journalists who will cover the big doings.

Guests include lawmakers, administration and law enforcement officials, policy experts and people whose lives have been forever changed by our failed and dangerous immigration policies, organizers say. Border security, vetting protocols, E-Verify and sanctuary policies will all be scrutinized by the hosts and their guests.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is not happy with the event, noting that emboldened FAIR will flood the talk radio airwaves during the two-day event.

The nativist climate in the U.S. is at a fever pitch following an 18-month presidential campaign and six months of nativist polices being enacted by executive decree. FAIRs victory lap later this week will only add to the cacophony, the group noted in a statement Tuesday, referring to the host organization as an anti-immigrant hate group.

FOR THE LEXICON

FNN

Radio host Rush Limbaughs new name for CNN. It stands for Fake News Network, he says, suggesting that his old monicker for the news organization the Clinton News Network is now somewhat passe.

TRUMP-FREE, FOR 24 HOURS

They dont care much for President Trump, and for a 24-hour period, they did without him. That would be Salon, which declared itself to be Trump-free on Tuesday as an experiment in journalism. Or something.

The entire American media has been caught in an endless feedback loop, and we are not immune. But public fascination with his words, deeds and actions has barely ebbed since Election Day or Inauguration Day, if it has ebbed at all. His name and face remain surefire clickbait, for our site and virtually everyone elses, the editors noted in a public message.

Do Salons readers actually want a day without You Know Who? Or a week? Or a lifetime? Or is this the media equivalent of buying three bunches of kale, knowing full well you will let them rot in the veggie drawer? they noted, inviting the inevitable reader feedback.

BROADCASTERS OBSESSED WITH RUSSIA

A new Media Research Center study reveals just how much the broadcast networks are obsessed with President Trump and unproven Russian collusion. Senior analyst Rich Noyes reveals that 55 percent of the stories on Mr. Trump airing on ABC, CBS and NBC centered on the Russia probe. Thats 171 out of 364 evening news stories. A third of these stories were anonymously sourced.

The networks concentrated on the Russia matter at the expense of important policy topics. The three networks collectively spent less than five minutes each on economic policy, trade issues and U.S. relations with Cuba.

The investigation garnered 20 times more attention than the new health care bill, 100 times more attention than the administrations push to improve the nations infrastructure and a stunning 450 times more coverage than the push for comprehensive tax reform, Mr. Noyes said.

ABCs World News Tonight was most enraptured by the Russia story, devoting nearly two-thirds of its Trump news to the subject. On CBS Evening News it was 54 percent; on NBC Nightly News it was 48 percent.

Mr. Noyes pointed to a new Harvard-Harris Poll that found that the majority of voters believe the Russia investigations are damaging to the country and are eager to see Congress shift its focus to health care, terrorism, national security, the economy and jobs. The study was conducted from May 17 to June 20.

BENS SUGGESTIONS

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson had a word or two to say on the health care vote Capitol Hills latest testy cliffhanger. Will there be a consensus made on this GOP legislation?

In the end, there will be consensus here, particularly as people begin to understand that this is a work in process. I would offer to the Democrats: Begin to think about how we can make it work, not how it doesnt work. Thats one of the things that I find here in Washington. More people spend time talking about what cant be done than what can be done. Weve got to get back to the can-do attitude that made America great, Mr. Carson told Fox Business Network host Neil Cavuto on Tuesday.

Should the government still have a role in our health care system?

The government is supposed to facilitate life. That has to do with health care, the pursuit of happiness and liberty. I think all of those are important things. So there is a role for the government. But its not a predominant role, its a facilitating role, Mr. Carson observed.

FOXIFIED

Continuing its dominance as the top-rated news network, Fox News marked 62 consecutive quarters as the highest-rated cable news channel in total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Thats over 15 years in first place. Fox also topped basic cable in both prime-time and total daytime viewing, ahead of TNT and Nickelodeon, marking four consecutive quarters as the most-watched basic cable network of all.

The Fox News audience is also up by 27 percent compared to last year; the network also claimed 14 of the top 20 cable news programs.

There is also good news for the FOX Business Network, now the number one rated business network, besting rival CNBC, for three consecutive quarters in business day viewers.

POLL DU JOUR

71 percent of Americans use emojis, GIFs and other visual expressions when they text on phones or mobile messaging apps.

69 percent say these expressions make them feel more connected to people.

65 percent use the symbols to express their personality or emotions.

59 percent are more comfortable expressing emotions with symbols rather then voicing them in a phone conversation.

Trump to rally Congress on immigration after healthcare setback – Washington Examiner

President Trump on Wednesday will use the bully pulpit to rally support for tough immigration legislation, a day after he was forced to watch the Senate pull the plug on a healthcare reform bill that Trump has sought since his election.

Trump will meet at the White House with victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, in a bid to boost two bills that the House is expected to pass Thursday before lawmakers leave for the July 4 break. The bills are aimed at thwarting "sanctuary cities" that refuse to cooperate with federal officials on immigration and imposing tougher penalties against deported criminals who re-enter the United States.

Trump has spoken out often as a candidate and as president about the need for tougher policies against illegal immigrant criminals.

In February, he brought victims of illegal immigrants to Congress as guests for his first remarks to joint session of Congress. He set up a new office in the Department of Homeland Security to help victims of these crimes.

"We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media and silenced by special interests," he said in his joint session speech. "Joining us in the audience tonight are four very brave Americans whose government failed them."

On Wednesday, he'll draw attention to the issue once more by meeting immigration crime victims at the White House as part of an effort to create the semblance of legislative momentum on one of his goals.

Trump was not happy Tuesday after he watched the Senate buckle and call for a delay of several weeks before calling up a bill to partially repeal Obamacare. He called in every Republican senator to the White House and warned that the GOP was at risk of losing its majority unless it found a way to move on the complicated issue.

"He was encouraging us to figure out a way forward and kind of the cost of failure, of what it would mean not to get it done," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said.

Trump's job for the rest of the week will be much easier, as the two immigration bills he'll support will get votes in the House and will pass easily thanks to the GOP's majority there. They're also related to a bill that passed in the House in the last Congress under former President Barack Obama, who was never going to sign them into law.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said Trump is the big difference this year when it comes to their passage into law.

"The holdup has been getting a president of the United States who would sign this bill into law," he said of the failed attempt last year.

The first bill up on Thursday will be the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, a bill aimed at discouraging the formation of sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with the federal government on immigration.

Goodlatte's bill would withhold some federal grants to jurisdictions that prohibit their officers from communicating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and require illegal immigrants convicted of dangerous crimes to be detained during removal proceedings.

The legislation would also permit lawsuits by victims of crime against jurisdictions that practice sanctuary city policies.

The second bill is Kate's Law, which would impose tougher penalties against deported felons who return to the United States. The bill is named after Kate Steinle, who was killed by an illegal immigrant who had been deported five times.

"We owe it to the families of those who lost loved ones to take action to prevent these horrible crimes," Goodlatte said last week as his bills were being teed up for a vote. "They have waited far too long."

Families Launch Advocacy Group For Victims Of Illegal Alien Crime – The Daily Caller

Six American families whose relatives have been killed by illegal immigrants announced Tuesday the formation of a victims advocacy group, responding to what they see as indifference among elected officials to the dangers of illegal alien crime.

The members of Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime (AVIAC) say they are joining together in order to provide a support network for other families and to educate the public on the effects of lax immigration enforcement. The nonprofit organization plans to lobby Congress on a wide range of illegal immigration bills, including measures to punish sanctuary cities and provide funding for President Donald Trumps proposed border wall. (RELATED:WH: Signing Anti-Illegal Immigration Bills Is A Priority)

In an emotional ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., mothers and fathers recounted stories of how their children were slain. Many laid blame for the killings at the feet of government officials, who they said have pursued sanctuary city policies in order to score political points.

My son is dead because politicians in local jurisdictions have put illegal aliens ahead of Americans, said Maureen Maloney, whose son Matthew was killed in Massachusetts in 2011, when an illegal alien ran him over in a hit-and-run incident.

My sons killer had a lengthy criminal record, and with each offense only received a slap on the wrist from lenient judges, and local law enforcement was prohibited from communicating with ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], she added. Iowa Republican Steve King, one of Congress most strident immigration hawks, praised the creation of AVIAC, saying that it will prod Congress to restore the rule of law to the U.S. immigration system.By documenting crimes committed by illegal immigrants, AVIAC will help build a strong database, so America understands the price Americans have paid for the failure to enforce immigration law, King said during introductory remarks at the AVIAC launch event.

In addition to support from King, AVIAC also has a willing ally in the White House. The groups formation comes after Trump authorized the creation of Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE), an office within the Department of Homeland Security that provides support to the families of victims of removable criminal aliens. AVIAC co-founder and vice president Mary Ann Mendoza was invited to attend Trumps signing of executive orders on immigration enforcement in January, and she was present at DHS Secretary John Kellys announcement of the VOICE office in April.

The families of AVIAC were encouraged by Trumps tough rhetoric on illegal immigration during the campaign, especially his promises to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and to pull funding from cities that dont cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. His stance was a welcome change from former administrations who had not been doing that, Mendoza told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Mendoza, whose son was killed by a drunk driving illegal alien on Mothers Day 2014, believes AVIAC is needed because there has been a backlash from the media and some politicians to the Trump administrations crackdown on illegal immigration.

We are trying to get Americans to back our president up, she told TheDCNF.

Members of AVIAC say shining a light on illegal alien crime is not intended to demonize all immigrants, as some critics have alleged, but rather to draw attention to the public safety problems caused by criminal aliens.

The amount [of crime] that happens on a daily basis will stagger the American public when we start to get this information out there, Mendoza told reporters at the National Press Club. Its time for American victims to be more important to their fellow Americans than illegal aliens that our in our country. Its time to to stand up for your fellow Americans.

WH: Signing Anti-Illegal Immigration Bills Is A Priority – The Daily Caller

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump is looking forward to signing two bills designed to curb illegal immigration, according to White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Spicer said at Mondays press briefing that the House is expected to vote on both theNo Sanctuary for Criminals Act and Kates Law at the end of this week.

The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act withholds Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice grants from states and localities that dont comply with federal immigration detainers. It also protects these localities from lawsuits due to complying with these detainers, while allowing victims of crimes from released illegal immigrants to sue these jurisdictions.

Kates Law adds increased punishments for deported illegal immigrants who return back to the United States. It is named after Kate Steinle, whose 2015 murder was allegedly done by a five-time deported illegal immigrant.

Spicer said that these bills are major priorities for the president, and that combating illegal immigration is an issue that should unite all Americans in both major parties.

Spicer went on to say, We look forward to signing them both.

He also added that the bills represent a major tool in a fight to dismantle the dangerous MS-13cartel. The Trump administration has focused on taking apart the transnational street gang based out of El Salvador. The president said at a recent cabinet meeting that the gang will be gone pretty soon.

Former Sheriff Arpaio back in court, this time accused of disobeying order on immigrants – Washington Times

Arizonas Joe Arpaio, once known as Americas toughest sheriff, was back Monday where has long been most at home in the spotlight although not for the reasons he would have preferred.

Months after losing his re-election bid, the 85-year-old former Maricopa County sheriff went on trial in Phoenix on misdemeanor criminal contempt-of-court charges, a case his foes have praised as long overdue and fans have denounced as a political prosecution.

Federal prosecutors argued that Mr. Arpaio willfully disobeyed a 2011 injunction barring him from enforcing federal immigration laws by detaining 170 suspected illegal aliens from December 2011 to May 2013.

After U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement refused to accept the suspects in 2012, the sheriffs office tried a workaround by taking them to Border Patrol.

He thought he could get away with it, prosecutor Victor Salgado said in his opening argument, according to ABC15. He never thought this day would come.

Defense attorney Jack Wilenchik called the prosecution of Mr. Arpaio shameful and outrageous, as reported by the Phoenix New Times.

Mr. Arpaio became a national figure during his 24 years as sheriff with headline-grabbing moves such as requiring prisoners to wear pink underwear and erecting a tent city for offenders.

The trial has gained national attention with the defenses attempt to call Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a witness, which the Justice Department has resisted, saying Mr. Sessions was a senator during the relevant period and that the defense has failed to show extraordinary circumstances.

The proceedings, playing out before a packed courtroom, began on Monday with a victory for the prosecution: Hours beforehand, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Mr. Arpaios request for a jury trial.

Instead, the former lawman will have his fate decided by U.S. District Court Judge Susan R. Bolton, a Clinton appointee, in a trial expected to last eight days. If found guilty, Mr. Arpaio faces a maximum six months in jail.

The prosecution called former Arpaio counsel Tim Casey, who said he told the sheriff that he must either arrest detainees on state charges or release them, instead of detaining them solely on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

Mr. Casey said he told the sheriff and his subordinates, Arrest or release. Those are the options, The Arizona Republic reported.

Opinion on the case is sharply divided. James Fotis, president of the National Center for Police Defense, accused the Justice Department of deep state bias, noting that prosecutors filed the charges two weeks before the Nov. 8 election.

With over 55 years of law enforcement experience, Sheriff Arpaio has always followed and enforced the laws on the books. Now, the DOJ wants to put him in prison for enforcing the very laws he swore an oath to uphold, Mr. Fotis said in a Monday statement.

The six-term Republican sheriff lost his seventh bid for office to Democrat Paul Penzone, a former police officer, by 56 percent to 44 percent. The new sheriff has since taken down the tent city.

After the loss, Mr. Arpaio started a conservative nonprofit called the Sheriff Joe Arpaio Action Fund to advocate on issues such as illegal immigration and Second Amendment rights. Im not retired, thats for sure, he said.

In a pro-and-con, columnists for The Arizona Republic said Mr. Arpaio was guilty of violating the December 2011 preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Court Judge G. Murray Snow, but they disagreed on the punishment.

Columnist Elvia Diaz called for prison, saying she wanted the elderly former sheriff to go through the same hell that he forced Latinos to live, the same agony and torture of an uncertain future. Op-ed writer Laurie Roberts argued for leniency.

Ms. Roberts said the former sheriff has already lost what he loved most with his election defeat and his sentence of irrelevance.

Plenty of people are out for Arpaios blood, she said. Theyd give him life if they could.

The charges stem from a 2007 class-action lawsuit brought by Manuel de Jesus Ortega Melendres against the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office arguing that Sheriff Arpaio had engaged in racial profiling by detaining Hispanics based solely on suspicion of their legal status.
