Trump’s illegal immigrant database will expose national scope of crimes – The Hill (blog)

President Trump triggered the groan heard round the world last night from a handful of vocal politicians during his address to a joint session of Congress. Curiously, the rumbling occurred when he announced he would give a voice to the thousands who had needlessly suffered at the hands of illegal immigrants and whose stories had been largely ignored by the media and the federal government.

At the Federation for American Immigration Reform, weve produced a video that explains the good news/bad news scenario faced by the public due to this problem.

Specifically, President Trump intends to create an office within the Department of Homeland Security to begin collecting and making publicly available a database on crimes committed by removable immigrants. The office would also provide proactive, timely, adequate, and professional services to victims of crimes committed by removable aliens and the family members of such victims.

Clearly, the collective gasp by these advocates and cheerleaders during the public address underscored their recognition that the soon-to-be collected data would indeed be damning for their case. Certain states already collect data on crimes committed by removable aliens, offering a glimpse of what the national outlook might look like. If the information from these states is any indication of the size and scope of the problem, the American public will soon be incensed.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) recently reported that Texas alone has arrested more than 212,000 criminal aliens who have committed more than half a million crimes in the state since June 1, 2011. The arrests have already resulted in more than 251,000 convictions, with many potential convictions still pending in the court system.

And roughly 66 percent two out of three of those arrested were in this country illegally. The 212,000 criminal aliens arrested committed crimes ranging from drug-related cases to assault and obstructing justice. But a strikingly large number of convictions, 6,861, were for heinous crimes like homicide, kidnapping, sexual assault, and weapons charges.

Recent data out of Oregon not exactly the nexus of high immigration shows that a single county, Marion, housed 239 of the 955 criminal aliens incarcerated in the states prison system. Nearly 70 percent of inmates were involved in crimes that included sex abuse, rape, sodomy, homicide, or assault.

Although the data fail to reveal the legal status of the criminal aliens, it demonstrates that in that single Oregon county alone, residents were harmed or victimized by criminal aliens from more than a dozen different countries.

The president also promised the families and widows of two California law enforcement officers, Michael Davis, Jr., and Danny Oliver, who were murdered by an illegal immigrant in the line of duty, that their loved ones did not perish in vain. Their names were memorialized in the 114th Congress by the Davis-Oliver Act, an interior enforcement bill, which aims to increase cooperation between federal and local officials in the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.

Specifically, the bill would provide local law enforcement the critical resources needed to create a web of enforcement against illegal immigration, while also imposing stiff penalties against local governments that obstruct immigration enforcement. All law enforcement agencies have an ethical obligation to work cooperatively to protect the safety and security of the citizens they are sworn to serve.

Passage of Davis-Oliver, in addition to Trumps vow to use all federal resources available to crack down on sanctuary cities, will work in tandem to enhance public safety throughout the nation.

Both during his campaign and now as president, Trump has demonstrated that he understands that immigration is not a one-sided ledger. Yes, there are benefits, but there are certainly costs as well. And in doing this, he is not only prodding the nation to rethink its approach to immigration policy, but is also offering a platform to many Americans whose vital interests and safety have long been neglected by their government.

Illegal aliens and welfare queens (and kings) – WND.com

In his first address to a joint session of Congress, President Trump restated his plans to shore up our borders and stop the flow of illegal aliens flooding into the country. Republicans jumped to their feet to applaud his words. However, some of those who stood did so reluctantly.

If we could zoom in for a closer look, we would find many of those lawmakers with their fingers crossed behind their backs. Thats because if they back this president, there will be hell to pay from many of their big business donors if the flow of illegal immigrants is slowed or stopped completely. Their supply of cheap labor will dry up. Who will clean the toilets, man the car washes? Who will pick our fruits and vegetables? Who will fill the low-skilled jobs in our factories?

The reality is that many of those jobs may go unfilled if there is not a companion effort to reform really reform welfare.

On Feb. 21, an agri-businessman in Florida complained to a Fox News reporter that he couldnt get his crops picked due to the renewed effort to enforce our immigration laws. Paul Dimare said that he now ships 20 loads of produce a day where he used to ship as many as 80. He claims he cant find Americans to do this work for $150 a day.

Said Dimare, They really didnt take anybodys jobs because the Americans arent working in the field. That Im going to tell you!

The salary Dimare pays is equal to $37,500 per year. Thats three times the current poverty rate of $12,060 per year for a single individual and well above the poverty rate for someone supporting a family of four. At that rate a working couple could pull down $75,000 a year, which would provide a good standard of living in most agricultural areas of the county.

Its funny how bleeding-heart liberals are all for women in the workforce unless, of course, we are talking about women on welfare. Then, they argue, we cant expect mothers to work, and certainly not full-time.

So lets go back to our family of four that could pull down $75,000 working those agri-jobs. Presently, there are over 90 different means-tested welfare programs that will give that family of four with an income of 200 percent of the poverty level, currently $49,200 per year, a plethora of benefits that include things like free housing, free food, free medical care and free money. All they have to do is earn less that $49,200 per year. Why bust their buns to earn $75,000 a year when they can get everything they need for free?

Different states have different requirements and time limits. However, all those requirements have holes big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

But forget the loopholes. Many working-age adults simply apply for and receive disability. Its not difficult. Since 1990, the number of working-age adults on the disability rolls has doubled. Yes, despite all our medical advances, one in 20 working-age adults has been officially declared disabled and has conveniently disappeared from the unemployment rolls. Most of those on disability state one of two problems: mental disorders or back problems.

Trying to access someones mental condition is a little like nailing jello to a tree. As far as back problems, show me someone over 40 who doesnt have them! Thankfully, most people with back problems still go to work and pay the benefits of those who would rather stay home and cash their SSI checks. Show me someone who can hop out of his truck or make every yard sale, and I will show you somebody who has no business sponging off the poor working stiff!

Yes, it has become increasingly hard to find Americans who are willing to work, or willing to work hard at a low-skill job if necessary in order to support themselves. Nevertheless, methinks Mr. Dimare may protest too much.

So far, there has been no serious effort to round up people who are in this country illegally working, but have committed no other crimes. Also, since the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act there is no limit to the amount of H-2A agricultural guest workers an employer can bring in legally, provided he can prove a need and is willing to provide befits and wages stipulated by the Department of Labor. Most dont. It is just too easy to get workers who are willing to simply hop over the border, because they can.

Our welfare system and our immigration system are broken, and it is impossible to fix one and not the other.

Illegal immigration dropped 27 percent in January: Reports – Washington Times

Illegal immigration across the southwest border plummeted in January, compared to December, as the flow of both illegal immigrant families and children traveling alone dried up, according to numbers released by Customs and Border Protection on Monday.

The numbers are still high compared to past years indeed, its the worst January in records dating back to 2012.

But total apprehensions of migrants trying to sneak across the border fell 27 percent on a month-to-month basis, to 31,575. And the number of inadmissible migrants who showed up at the southwests ports of entry fell 28 percent, to 10,899.

Apprehensions are deemed an indicator of the overall flow: The more people caught, the more are believed to be getting through.

The flow always decreases in the deep months of the winter, before picking up again in the spring. Last year Border Patrol apprehensions dropped 36 percent from December to January.

Overall total migration remained at elevated levels, primarily due to family units and unaccompanied children from Central America, Haitian nationals migrating from Brazil, and Cuban nationals, CBP said in releasing the numbers.

CBP continues to maintain a strong security posture through background checks of all individuals encountered and ensures that each person is processed in accordance with U.S. immigration laws and DHS policy, the agency said.

The number of Cubans showing up to demand entry fell from nearly 5,000 in December to just 1,572 in January, as President Obamas new Cuban policy kicked in Jan. 12. Under that policy, those who are caught on U.S. soil are no longer entitled to special treatment.

But the number of Haitians demanding entry ticked up in January, suggesting a renewed flow from that nationality. Tens of thousands of Haitians fled their island country over the last decade, heading to South America. But over the last year theyve started trying to gain a foothold in the U.S., enticed by what they saw as lax enforcement policies.

Heated illegal immigration debate interrupts foster care talk in House – Austin American-Statesman

Illegal immigration took center stage in the Texas House Wednesday during consideration of a bill to boost pay for low-income foster parents caring for a foster child who is a relative.

State Rep. Mark Keough, R-The Woodlands, proposed an amendment to House Bill 4 that would have prohibited unauthorized immigrants from receiving the pay increase.

Here we are starting off a program right off the bat and paying monies to somebody who is not a documented citizen. I have a hard time with that Keough said.

Several House Democrats pounced, accusing Keough, a former car dealership sales manager, of being racist and a hypocrite for doing business with at least one person in the country illegally, and for putting politics before vulnerable children.

State Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, the most vocally opposed to Keoughs proposal, said it was shameful that the House descended into an illegal immigration debate on the first day of real business for the chamber this session.

When we got up this morning, we thought we were going to come here and talk about kids and how were going to protect kids. The debate has now turned into an immigration debate, Anchia said. These kids are innocent. They dont get to pick who their parents are, who their extended family are, who their caregivers are. Theyre just trying to survive.

Byron Cook, a Republican from Corsicana, also was unhappy with Keoughs amendment.

Im pretty heartbroken to be part of this today. We came here to take care of children, children that cant help their circumstance. If we put children first, we wouldnt be obsessive about whos providing the care, Cook said.

After proclaiming that he was not a racist, Keough eventually withdrew his amendment and House members unanimously gave initial approval of the bill.

Under the bill which was filed by Rep. Cindy Burkett, R-Sunnyvale, families that make no more than 300 percent of the federal poverty level or $72,750 for a family of four, according to 2016 federal guidelines could receive about $4,200 per year per child.

The cost to the state would be $32.5 million over the next two years.

Now, such people who take in family foster children are eligible to receive only a one-time payment of up to $1,000 for the oldest child in a sibling group and $495 for each additional child and an annual payment of up to $500 per child for child-related expenses.

Earlier Wednesday, House members also gave initial approval unanimously on House Bill 5, filed by Rep. James Frank, R-Wichita Falls. It would move the Department of Family and Protective Services out from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission so that the department would become its own agency.

Frank said that the move would allow the department to make quicker decisions without wading through administrative red tape.
