There are indications that entrepreneurs have harnessed the wide coverage of the Internet and mobile technology to create sustainable enterprises, wealth and employment for Nigerian graduates.
At an e-business fair organised by Connect Nigeria, Information Technology professionals highlighted businesses and jobs that could be created using disruptive technology, digital marketing techniques and social apps through mobile platforms.
One of the discussants, the co-Founder and Business Manager, Tranzit.ng, Ugochi Ugbomeh, explained that Tranzit was established to solve transport and delivery service problems in the country.
According to her, the mobile technology can be applied for business success by first identifying peoples problem which can be solved using a mobile platform and designing strategies to execute the venture.
She said that statistics showed a higher percentage of Nigerians using mobile technology in 2014 as against the population that utilised it in 2011 and a corresponding decline in the use of desktop to access the Internet.
She said, In mobile technology, information is more fluid, responsive and the portable nature of mobile devices supports easy access. Security breaches can be addressed by developing an Information Technology policy for the business and putting up a firewall.
She advised startups to use conventional means of marketing like referrals, fliers and word-of-mouth owing to their reduced costs.
Addressing new entrants into the e-commerce industry, the Head, Business and Strategic Partnerships, Terragon Group, Anu Sanya, said that digital technology as a marketing tool was capable of giving more visibility to business because it was capable of reaching a larger population regardless of their locations.
She added that digital marketing would increase exposure, help to develop loyal customers, build brands and grow business partnerships with others with or without utilising the Internet.
Sanya stressed that in order to engage and build a sustainable relationship with readers on the social media, the content of messages should be interesting.
