20 Years later – Dept of Health’s Chief Ambulance Officer Retires

by Department of Health

The Department of Healths Chief Ambulance Officer, Steve Sieling is retiring after 20 years of service with the Isle of Man Ambulance Service. Steve, who retires on 31st May 2012, took up a post as an Ambulance Training Officer with Noble's Hospital in October 1992, having joined Bedfordshire Ambulance in 1983 where he progressed from Patient Transport Service to Paramedic with additional qualifications as tutor and driving instructor. He progressed with the Isle of Man Ambulance service to Chief Ambulance Officer in 2005. Steve Sieling, reflecting on his time in the Isle of Man Ambulance Service, said: Working as part of a fantastic dedicated team makes me proud, with special mention for all the commitment and productivity from Russell Thornhill, Raymond Beattie and Peter Smith, not forgetting the mentorship from Mike Whiteside in the early days. To my family it was funny as I hated the sight of blood. Over the years, I have overcome this fear. Working as a Paramedic and most recently as Chief Ambulance Officer has been challenging but very inspiring. It has meant that my family have had to be extremely flexible as plans can change at the last minute. I look forward to putting them first, being more involved in the younger ones growing up and spending quality time with the older ones. Steve continued: I remember my first TT fortnight, back in 1993, as a shock. I had to put all my training to good use, working from very early mornings to late nights for most of the fortnight. The Ambulance Service used to provide cover for all practice and race sessions, which the Islands Volunteer Services have now taken up, freeing the Ambulances to continue their invaluable work providing emergency care across the Island. There has been much change from when Steve started, with only one ambulance on duty all day for emergencies as well as Patient Transport Service, to four in-service ambulances providing emergency care across the Island. Steve set up full training for Paramedics including drug administration. This along with continuing changes to equipment and vehicles has meant that the Isle of Man Ambulance Service is ready to meet the changing demands, which have seen emergency call attendances grow from 2,000 per year in the early 1990s, to over 7,000 last year (2011). David Killip, Chief Executive Officer said: It has been a pleasure working with Steve, who has met the varying challenges in his career with great enthusiasm and dedication. I am sure that Steve will enjoy retirement with the freedom to spend time with the family and continue to nurture his love of vintage cars. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Crown Depedencies Summit Held

30 May 2012

The Isle of Mans Chief Minister Allan Bell recently held meetings with members of the Jersey and Guernsey governments to increase cooperation in areas of mutual interest and concern..

Bell met the recently-elected Chief Minister of Jersey, Ian Gorst, and Guernseys new Chief Minister, Peter Harwood, along with the islands deputy Chief Ministers and Treasury Ministers.

Ahead of his meetings, Bell noted that: "Whilst the Isle of Man and Channel Islands are often rivals in terms of competing for new business, there are also opportunities for us to work together for our mutual benefit.

Topics discussed at the meetings included the financial challenges facing each of the territories, policies for economic growth, and international developments, including in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Each of the three Crown Dependencies have been affected recently by changes in European rules on business taxation, which has triggered each of the territories to repeal, or schedule the repeal, of their tax regimes deemed distribution provisions. In addition, Jersey and Guernsey have recently suffered from the UK government's decision to revoke low-value consignment relief, a longstanding value-added tax concession on low value goods imported to the United Kingdom.

In comments ahead of the meetings, Bell said: [With the appointment of new Chief Ministers in each of the territories in the last twelve months] this is a new political era for the Crown Dependencies.

This weeks visits will provide an opportunity for me to strike up a personal rapport with both Harwood and Gorst, and deepen our understanding of each others priorities and aspirations. We are all experiencing similar challenges in terms of rebalancing our budgets and stimulating economic growth, and I am sure that our discussions around these common issues will be very positive and productive.

Chief Minister to meet Channel Islands counterparts

by Richard Parslow

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK is leading a senior Isle of Man Government delegation to the Channel Islands this week for a series of high-level meetings.

Mr Bell is meeting the recently elected Chief Minister of Jersey, Senator Ian Gorst, and Guernseys new Chief Minister, Deputy Peter Harwood, along with the Deputy Chief Ministers and Treasury Ministers of both islands.

The discussions will provide an opportunity to consider a wide range of issues facing all three Crown Dependencies, including financial challenges, the drive for economic growth, and developments within the UK and Europe.

Mr Bell, who is being accompanied by Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK, Chief Secretary Will Greenhow and Director of External Relations Della Fletcher, flew into Guernsey today (Tuesday, May 29) and will travel onwards to Jersey this evening.

The visits continue the Isle of Man Governments programme of engagement with political and business leaders in neighbouring jurisdictions.

All three Crown Dependencies have new Chief Ministers. Mr Bell was elected to the post in the Isle of Man in October 2011, Senator Gorst was appointed Chief Minister of the States of Jersey in November last year, while Deputy Harwood became Chief Minister of the States of Guernsey earlier this month.

Mr Bell said: This is a new political era for the Crown Dependencies following the recent general elections in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, and the appointments of new Chief Ministers in all three islands. This weeks visits will provide an opportunity for me to strike up a personal rapport with both Deputy Harwood and Senator Gorst, and deepen our understanding of each others priorities and aspirations.

He added: We are all experiencing similar challenges in terms of rebalancing our budgets and stimulating economic growth, and I am sure that our discussions around these common issues will be very positive and productive. I am also looking forward to building my relationships with Deputy Harwood and Senator Gorst in the future, in particular when we represent our countries at international forums such as the British-Irish Council Summits.

It will be interesting to gain a personal insight into the current political and economic situation in Jersey and Guernsey. Whilst the Isle of Man and Channel Islands are often rivals in terms of competing for new business, there are also opportunities for us to work together for our mutual benefit.

IoM Space Industry Noted At IoD Event

29 May 2012

The Isle of Man has welcomed praise for the island's burgeoning aerospace sector in an important new report from the Institute of Directors (IoD), considering the future trajectory of the United Kingdom industry.

The report entitled Space: Britains New Infrastructure Frontier, and authored by Dan Lewis, Chief Executive of the Economic Policy Centre, Chief Executive of Future Energy Strategies and Energy Policy Adviser to the IoD, was presented to an audience of 100 key players in the British space industry at a recent event hosted by the Institute.

A full chapter, dedicated to the Isle of Man space industry, The Isle of Mans Mighty Space Sector, highlights the islands ethos of innovation and its commitment to embracing new and growing industries. The report says: "Like many micro nations, the Isle Of Man has a history of quickly adapting to fast emerging industries from fishing to banking to financial supervision to the film industry to e-gaming and e-commerce and now space", with the report putting much of the islands success down to achieving a cluster effect of major companies.

The report also highlighted the island's home grown 'space champion', ManSat, and its role in orbital filing with the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, in addition to the presence of the Space Data Association (SDA) on the Isle of Man which, just this month, held a successful workshop with the International Institute of Space Commerce with participants from the US and Europe.

Attending the event from the IoD event to launch the report was Tim Craine, Director of Business Development at the Department of Economic Development, who commented: "It is highly significant that the island received the recognition and praise for its space sector from a prestigious body such as the IoD and is further evidence of the strength of the sector and significant interest that the islands space industry attracts."

Alex Downie, Member of the Department of Economic Development with responsibility for Space, added: "The IoD event was an ideal opportunity for the island to demonstrate that its space industry is complementary to, rather than in direct competition with, the UKs space industry. This partnership is important to emphasize how the island adds value to the UK economy as well as providing benefit to our own economy."

by Paul Watson

With just one week to go until the Olympic Torch Relay comes to the Isle of Man, the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure is encouraging everyone to line the streets and show their support for the inspirational local Torchbearers. Hon Tim Crookall MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure said: The Isle of Man is extremely privileged to host the Torch Relay for a whole day on 2 June. The route and activities have been planned to ensure that the Island takes full advantage of its moment to shine. The Islands proud sporting, cultural and maritime heritage is represented in what I am sure will be a highlight of the entire Torch Relay. Coinciding with the first race of TT2012, it will be a busy and memorable day for the Isle of Man. For the security of the Torch and Torchbearer, spectators are urged not to obstruct the progress of the convoy or come between the security team and the Torchbearer. Between the Torchbearer locations, the Relay will be in convoy mode. This means the convoy will be transporting the Torch to the next location on the Relay. Whilst you will be able to watch the convoy, there will not be a view of the Torch along these parts of the route. The key points for viewing the Torch Relay are listed below: Key Olympic Torch viewing points Location 1: Braddan (est. arrival time 10:25am) National Sports Centre - The Torch Relay will begin with a full lap of the NSC track, offering some of the best views of the Torch on the day. As parking will be limited, spectators are encouraged to arrive before roads close at 10am, park at the Bowl stadium, to use the bus or to walk to the NSC. Quarterbridge to Braddan Church - Amongst the many unique aspects of the Torch Relay in the Isle of Man will be the leg celebrating the Islands motorsport heritage. David Knight will carry the torch as a passenger for Milky Quayle riding from Quarterbridge to Braddan Bridge. Location 2: Douglas (est. arrival time 11:20am) South Quay - To commemorate the unique role of the Island in the RNLI, a member from each of the Islands lifeboat crews will crew the Douglas Lifeboat - RNLI Sir William Hillary, whilst the Torchbearer carries the Torch from Battery Pier to Circus Beach. Horse Tram - Waiting for the Torch to complete its sea journey will be a horse tram to carry it to the War Memorial. Cyclists - Cycling has become an important part of Island life and the huge success of stars such as Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh has put Manx cycling at the forefront of the sport. The cycling leg of the Relay will take place along Douglas Promenade. Manx Electric Railway - Transport is a prominent theme during this leg of the Torch Relay and the Torch will make its way to Laxey by being carried on the Manx Electric Railway. Location 3: Laxey (est. arrival time 2.20pm) Laxey Wheel - Stopping for an iconic photoshoot at the Laxey Wheel, the Torch Relay will begin its return journey to Castletown before continuing on to Belfast.
