Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for volunteers for Gals Read. An event that runs for three weeks in March during students 30-minute lunch periods and helps emphasize reading for pleasure and fun, as this helps students naturally become better readers. Ice Alaska, the organization that puts on the BP World Ice Art Championships, is signing up volunteers for the 2014 event. Inside volunteer jobs include: work in the Ice Alaska food concession stand, ticket booth or gift shop; serve food and general kitchen work; computer, technical support; data entry/word processing/mail merge; and Web authoring in JOOMLA. Outside volunteer work includes safety/security people to do park patrol; ice sculpting helper in Childrens Park; certified fork lift operator and experienced heavy equipment operators; and foreign language interpreters. The park is open 35 days from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feb. 24 through March 30. We schedule four-hour shifts and ask a minimum commitment of 20 hours during the month. The American Cancer Society located in the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is lookingfor individuals willing to volunteer in our CRC for a few hours per week. The American Cancer Societyalso is in great need of more volunteers willing to drive patients from their homes to the cancer center and back home again. Drivers would be given notice about pick-ups and would not be required to assist patients getting in and out of the vehicles. Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is looking for hospice volunteers.These volunteers provide respite care, emotional support, run errands and other practical support to their hospice patient and family. We also have an ongoing need for administrative volunteers to help at the front desk of our hospice office. We welcome donated quilts for our hospice patients.
