SUBOG holds giant game of knockout

UConns attempt to break the world record for the largest game of knockout proved unsuccessful, but that didnt stop the 381 participants from enjoying the music, free giveaways and publicity from the Guinness Book of World Records videotaping crew.

With 381 participants, UConn was 190 people short of breaking the current world record.

Despite the failure, Ryan Swick, a 6th semester human development and family studies major and organizer of the event, said he was pleased with the turnout and hopeful that in the future UConn will be able to break the record.

Even though we didnt break it, it is really fulfilling to see this event happen, Swick said. We will look into doing it again next year, maybe on a different weekend so it doesnt have as many competing events.

Although many of the participants commented on the low turnout, Swick was impressed.

This is so much more than any other program I have ever done in Busby, where I am an RA, Swick said.

Even though the game was smaller than anticipated, it was still no ordinary gym class knockout game. The first round took just over 30 minutes, even with special rules to promote the speed of the event.

These new rules included an automatic elimination for any participant who shot an air ballan attempt that doesnt hit the net, rim, or backboardas well as no intentional contact with another players ball.

The Final Score: Air21 out to sneakily hit everyone in theyou know

The replay on the big screen was conclusive. Air21s Joseph Yeo clearly hit San Miguel Beers Chris Ross in the groin during the second quarter of their knockout game last April 25. When Joseph was interviewed minutes after the incident he said it was accidental. Thats right. It was accidentally on target. Im sure Chris will concur.

Im not sure what was funnier: that Joseph said he didnt mean to accurately smack Chris in the no-smack-zone or that once bitter enemies Joseph the Green Archer - and Enrico Villanueva the Blue Eagle barged into the PBA semis with the same team. Yeo, Villanueva, Cardona and Coach Franz Pumaren celebrated in the same huddle. Yeah, I never expected to see that.

In the same way, I didnt expect Air21 to beat San Miguel Beer. You probably didnt too. Hence, Yeos sneaky move ninja move was significant. The significance wouldve been different if Air21 lost. Since Yeo was ejected in the first half, losing his experience, playmaking and scoring for the rest of the game couldve been the deathblow. Air21, however, won. Yeos ninja move against Ross, therefore, became a polarizing symbol for the upstarts.

Asi Taulava is ready to continue smacking age in the groin. Hes out there representing the vets. Hes out there proving that all his painstaking work in the gym has paid off. Hes out there battling young giants like June Mar Fajardo. Hes out there still winning double overtime games at 41. By converting the buzzer-beating put-back that sent the game into overtime, Asi spiked the ghost of Bal Davids winning shot in the shorts too.

Sean Anthony aka The Human Bruise is ready to smack anyone in the groin on offense, defense, during timeouts. It will probably be accidental. Anthony is like a Chicago Bull. I have no idea how he ends up averaging over twenty points in two do-or-die games. I just recall how he fights for every rebound and how he dives for every loose ball. If youre an opponent, just protect yourself at all times.

I dont approve of Yeos sneaky smack down last April 25. Ejecting him was the correct punishment. However, one can appreciate the way Air21 takes big risks in order to win big games: relying on a forty-one-year-old center, starting Eliud Poligrates at PG, giving Anthony the green light to side-step like Manu Ginobili, or inserting Ogie Menor in crucial situations.

What Yeo did to Ross was likewise a risk. It couldve cost Air21 the game. Yet it also showed what Air21 was willing to do for an improbable spot in the semis. Lahat gagawin. Eject kung eject. All out or get out. Just imagine what this seventh seed is willing to do, what other ninja moves the Express might attempt, for an even more improbable berth in the PBA Finals. - AMD, GMA News

WATCH: San Mig Coffee's Joe Devance talks Alaska knockout game

San Mig Coffee's Joe Devance speaks with Rappler's Naveen Ganglani and Ryan Songalia at the opening of the NBA Cafe in Bonifacio Global City

MANILA, Philippines - The talk at the grand opening of the NBA Cafe at SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City on Friday, April 25 centered around the NBA playoffs, but at least one player was more concerned with his own postseason dreams.

Joe Devance, San Mig Coffee All-Star forward, had his mind wrapped around his team's knockout game against the Alaska Aces on Saturday, April 26. A win would mean a trip to the Commissioner's Cup semifinals while a loss would mean an early exit for the Mixers, who won it all just last conference.

Devance was willing to offer his thoughts on who will come out on top in the NBA (he's predicting a Miami Heat three-peat) but is more cautious about not "jynxing" his own squad's chances.

Alaska won Game 1 86-77 on Monday while San Mig Coffee rebounded well to take Game 2 on Wednesday in overtime by the score of 70-65. - Rappler.com

SUBOG and UConn Reslife will be hosting a Knock Out game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Hugh S. Greer Fieldhouse. The game will attempt to break the world record for the largest ever knockout game, currently held by Geneva College.

In 2013, Geneva put together a game that consisted of 656 students, merely a fraction of the student population here at UConn.

224 students have signed up on UConntact and are ready to help break the record, said Jamille Rancourt, president of SUBOG, We need 433 students to show up the day of the event to help break the record. I am really hoping this is possible as we are a championship school!

Students who want to participate in bringing yet another championship title to UConn can still sign up via UConntact. The first 300 students to do so will receive a T-shirt on the day of the event. However, only students that signed up before the day of the event are eligible to receive a T-shirt.

If a free T-shirt, breaking a world record and fighting toward the title of UConns Knock Out champion arent enticing enough, participants will also have the opportunity to win prizes a flat screen TV and gift cards to local eateries and mingle with special guests including UConn football coach Bob Diaco. Students that are eliminated from the game will have the option of enjoying other activities held in Fairfield Way.

Rancourt and SUBOG hope that the event give students a chance to have a good time while also showing the country what UConn can do.

As the current basketball champions, I think that we can show the country exactly what we are made of. It will be a very fun event and totally worthwhile if we break the record, said Rancourt.

Students participating in the event will check in at 6:30 p.m., and the first ball will be shot at 7:30 p.m.. Students must have their spring weekend wristband to participate in the event.
