Prosecutor files motion to try 'knockout game' teens as adults

Three teens accused in "knockout game" attacks on homeless men last month should be tried as adults, Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said Friday.

His office filed a motion to have the teens tried in adult court.

The teens, "so proud of themselves," recorded one of the "cowardly" attacks on video. Police characterized the incidents as part of "The Knockout Game."

A 17-year-old is charged in both attacks, which occurred March 1 and March 7. A 14-year-old is charged in the first and a 15-year-old in the second. All three are charged with felony robbery.

In the video, the older teen is seen following Ronald Baird, 51, a known panhandler who was collecting cans neighbors left for him in an alley near the Stivers School of the Arts on East Fifth Street in Dayton, where the two are students.

In the video obtained exclusively by WHIO and the Dayton Daily News, the teen is seen hitting the man, knocking him to the ground and following him when he runs away. The victim's wallet was stolen.

WORCESTER (CBS) Police are warning residents after three recent knockout attacks on city streets.

The three similar attacks happened on Main, Millbury and Chatham streets over the course of the last month. Police believe its all part of the so-called knockout game which refers to a blitz style attack on random unsuspecting strangers with the goal of knocking that person out with one punch.

In each attack, the victims were walking alone when they were approached by a male whom they had never met. The man then punched the victims in the face or head with such force it was clear the person wanted to inflict serious injury, police said.

Michael Davis, 56, was attacked on Main Street earlier this month. He says he was walking down the street on a Friday morning to grab a cup of coffee when someone came up behind him and punched him in the face.

I felt like I was being hit with something. not just a hand. It felt really powerful, he said.

Davis suffered five facial fractures and lost several teeth. Two weeks later, he still has a visible black eye. He wants people to understand that the knockout game has serious consequences. He feels like he could have been killed.

Who would go around just hitting somebody randomly, just hurting them, he said.

Another 56-year-old man and a 23-year-old man reported they were victims of similar attacks.

Three recent "knockout" attacks in Worcester may be part of a dangerous game, police warned residents.

Mike Davis says he could have been killed. The 56-year-old Worcester man was knocked unconscious by a punch on Friday.

Watch report

He was walking on Main Street in Worcester, a few blocks from his home, when someone came from behind and attacked.

"I remember the hit, felt the hit and that was it. Next thing you know, I was in the middle of the street," Davis said.

Strangers in a nearby store pulled him back onto the sidewalk and tried to help. He suffered five fractures and will require surgery.

My eye (socket) is broken. That's why you see all the redness. Over here, my nose is fractured. They could have killed me, because it's a head injury. If anything had gone up into the brain I would have been like a vegetable for the rest of my life. It's just that close," he said.

Worcester police are investigating the incident and two others that they believe could be part of the so-called "knockout game."

An advisory says police wants to make "citizens aware that these brazen attacks have occurred. Police urge citizens to use caution and be aware of your surrounds when walking alone."
