The battle for Ontarios government moved to the farmers field Tuesday as the Progressive Conservatives and Liberals staked their ground in the bid to sway rural voters before the June 12 vote.
Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne visited a beef farm in Paris, Ont., where she highlighted a plan from the partys proposed budget that would see a 10-year, $40-million a year fund to support farmers and the food processing industry. She also highlighted the Farms Forever program, designed to protect farmland in the province.
Ms. Wynne, who served as the minister of agriculture while sitting as premier, said the programs are the kind of efforts the next government should be focusing on, whether or not her party is successful.
It is absolutely important to the future of this province that we have a strong agriculture and food industry, she told reporters after driving a tractor down the farm lane.
Yes, this is about campaigning, but it is more importantly about the future of the province.
Brant, the local riding, is currently held by a Liberal, Dave Levac, who was on hand along with other local candidates Tuesday.
Just outside the farm gate, PC finance critic Vic Fedeli told reporters the promises in the budget, including those for agriculture, were not sustainable.
We know that the Ministry of Finance people have told Premier Kathleen Wynne that the budget is flawed, that they are not on track to balance to budget, he said, citing documents from the finance ministry the PC party was given weeks ago and which they publicly released.
The numbers they started with were notional and the goals they have are aspirational. In math, Im sorry, notions and aspirations dont add up.
Dressed in a full suit, Mr. Fedeli said he didnt crash the event out of concern for Liberals making gains in rural Ontario, but to spread information about the partys budget.
