A libertarian candidate running in the Iowa Senate race has been killed in a small plane crash, according to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

Doug Butzier, a physician at a Dubuque-area hospital, was killed after crashing the plane near Key West, Iowa, according to the report.

He was one of four third-party candidates on the ballot in the closely-watched Iowa Senate race between Bruce Braley and Joni Ernst.

A recent Des Moines Register poll showed Braley with 46 percent to Ernst's 47 percent. Three percent of respondents chose "someone else."

In a statement, Ernst offered her condolences: "I am deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Dr. Doug Butzier. I appreciated Doug's willingness to contribute to this important election. In addition to representing Libertarians in this campaign, Doug served his community as an ER doctor and medical leader. Gail and I will keep Doug's family in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn their untimely loss."

And Braley said he was "shocked and saddened" by the news: Im shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic death of Doug Butzier. I have enormous respect for anyone who puts their name forward as a candidate for public office. Carolyn and I send our thoughts and prayers to Dr. Butziers wife and family during this difficult time.

Report: Libertarian Running in IA Senate Race Dies in Plane Crash

Doug Butzier, the Libertarian Party nominee for U.S. Senate in Iowa, was killed in a plane crash, authorities said Tuesday. He was 59.

Key West Fire Chief Brian Arnold confirmed the crash and Butzier's death in a brief interview. He said Butzier was piloting an airplane late Monday night when it crashedabout a mile from the Dubuque airport, which Butzier was approaching. No one else was in the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating a crash in the Dubuque area that caused no ground injuries.

Butzier, an emergency room doctor, was a long-shot against state Sen. Joni Ernst (R) and Rep. Bruce Braley (D). Ernst offered condolences on Twitter:

In the race for governor, Adrian Wyllie is the mandate-killer. That alone makes him too important to ignore.

The Libertarian Party candidate belongs on stage alongside Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Democrat Charlie Crist at Wednesday's statewide TV debate at Broward College in Davie.

But barring some dramatic last-minute intervention from a federal judge, Wyllie will remain on the sidelines.

Wyllie belongs on TV, at the very least, to show voters what they are doing by casting votes for him to protest the mean-spirited, vote-against-the-other-guy race between Scott and Crist.

For example, Wyllie says that if elected, he'll seek to abolish all property taxes on owner-occupied homes and cut the state budget by 30 percent, or about $23 billion. Voters deserve to know how that would eviscerate public schools and health care.

Wyllie opposes what he sees as pervasive big-government intrusion into liberties. He opposes Common Core and the REAL ID driver's license law and favors full legalization of marijuana.

Several recent polls show Wyllie hovering near 10 percent, a surprisingly strong showing for a minor-party candidate. But the debate sponsors, Leadership Florida and Florida Press Association, set the threshold for Wyllie's participation at 15 percent. Since he has not reached that number, they excluded him. He filed suit in federal court in Fort Lauderdale and hopes for a hearing by Wednesday before U.S. District Judge James Cohn.

The Florida Press Association has enlisted a team of attorneys to oppose Wyllie's inclusion, meaning that news outlets across Florida, including the Times, an FPA member, have become a party to silencing Wyllie.

The establishment's determination to keep Wyllie out will only help his candidacy by enhancing his image as a little guy not controlled by big money and power.

His exclusion also reinforces one of the worst perceptions about politics: that it's of, by and for insiders, accessible only to the rich and well-known.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office says Dr. Douglas Butzier, who was the Libertarian candidate for Iowas U.S. Senate seat, was the pilot of the plane that crashed around 11 p.m. Monday as it approached Dubuque Regional Airport. Butzierwas the sole occupant of the aircraft.

CLEARWATER The Libertarian activist who is challenging state Sen. Jack Latvala, a veteran GOP lawmaker, launched his challenge from well to the right.

Tony Caso, a conservative activist and small business owner from Palm Harbor, is running on a pro-small government, anti-tax platform in his bid for the District 20 seat, which covers north Pinellas County from Largo to Palm Harbor.

Caso criticizes Latvala as an establishment Republican tied to monied interests and supporting causes some view as liberal, such as championing legislation to grant in-state tuition to the children of undocumented immigrants.

Latvala is taking it in stride.

Im always expecting a challenge, Latvala said. I take controversial positions and call them like I see them.

The controversy is part of what makes Latvala, 62, popular among centrist Republicans and Democrats. Latvala first was elected to the Senate in 1994 and served for eight years. He successfully ran again in 2010 and has served since.

He is described as outspoken and at times cantankerous. He has gone against his party repeatedly during his tenure, which Democrats, who did not run a candidate against him, can appreciate. He supports Medicaid expansion, environmental measures such as Florida Forever, and the Greenlight Pinellas transit initiative.

Sen. Latvala is one who has always been very outspoken with his political views, said University of South Florida political science professor emeritus Darryl Paulson. A lot of people like that maverick sort of image that Sen. Latvala projects. Many see that as a quality of leadership.

Caso, 65, was at the forefront of a tea party-spawned movement in 2011 that ultimately pressured the Pinellas County Commission to discontinue fluoridating the countys water supply.

Who in their right mind wants any toxic substance put into their body, Caso said during an October 2011 county commission meeting. This is all part of an agenda thats being pushed forth by the so-called globalists in our government and the world government to keep the people stupid so they dont realize whats going on.
