Libertarian gov. candidate Adrian Wyllie arrested in 'unconstitutional' Real ID standoff

From a press release:

May 9, 2014, Safety Harbor In a nearly three year long battle against Real ID, Adrian Wyllie, Libertarian candidate for governor of Florida, has been arrested in Safety Harbor giving him legal standing to fight the constitutionality of the legislation in court.

Wyllie, began his battle in May of 2011 by publicly surrendering his drivers license in protest of the Real ID Act of 2005 . This federal legislation, implemented by the State of Florida by then Republican Governor Charlie Crist in 2008, made changes to the requirements of obtaining a drivers license or identification card, including digital image captures of licensees, compliant with facial recognition via the FRnet. It requires certified documents to explain any name change- such as marriage or divorce- regardless of how long the person has been licensed. The fact that women are subject to far more difficult renewals than men and certain people are no longer subject to the birth certificate requirement is a violation of the 14th Amendment. The very fact the State is making you re-prove your identity without cause via these intrusive means is a violation of Floridas Article 1 Section 23 as well as a violation of our 4th Amendment rights.

As Martin Luther King once said An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law. Wyllie, in the tradition of Martin Luther King and other significant Americans who have fought for our civil liberties, was engaging in civil disobedience until the time he could fight the legislation in the proper venue.

Today, after 3 years of driving unlicensed throughout the state of Florida without incident, Adrian Wyllie has been arrested outside the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa. He was an invited guest to the 14th Anniversary Luncheon of the Intercultural Advocacy Institute, keynoted by State Senator Jack Latvala. This arrest will give Mr. Wyllie a chance to take his argument to a jury as he fights the criminal charges against him brought on by this unconstitutional law.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) If it seems like there are more Libertarians entering the political arena this election year thats because there are so far at least ten have announced they are running for office, according to the official party website.

Nine Libertarians have their eyes set on U.S. House of Representatives offices in multiple congressional districts, so far.

And Robert Sarvis, previously the Libertarian candidate in the 2013 gubernatorial race, will make a run for Mark Warners U.S. Senate seat. He finished third in the governors race, but he made a landmark achievement for a third party candidate in Virginia.

Sarvis received just over 6.5% of the vote, a number that hadnt been seen for a third party gubernatorial candidate in the South since 1970.

Sarvis doesnt seem to be done breaking records either. He has made a priority of finding Libertarian candidates to run for the House of Representatives this fall, and his star power has brought many forward.

He has encouraged many of these candidates to run and his race for Governor mobilized a lot of people and made many politically active for the first time, said Joe Enroughty, who is one of three who run the Old DominionLibertarianRadio Network.

Justin Upshaw receives the nomination at the Libertarian Party 3rd District Convention at The Robin Inn on Park Avenue.

Tuesday night the Libertarian Party 3rd District held their convention at The Robin Inn on Park Avenue. Enroughty said that Justin Upshaw received the nomination for the district, which means he will run against Congressman Bobby Scott.

POLITICS: Hunter a lock, but challengers plan spirited attack

Rep. Duncan D. Hunter is broadly expected to cruise to re-election in November, but thats not keeping his two opponents from planning spirited, grassroots campaigns. James Kimber, a Democrat, and Mike Benoit, a Libertarian, are both working to end Hunters congressional career.

Hunter, though, has all the advantages of rich funding and incumbency, plus a name that resonates in the district, which ranges from Temecula in the north to beyond El Cajon in the south.

Hunter filled his fathers shoes in 2008, when Duncan L. Hunter retired from the seat he held from 1981 to 2009, rising to chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. In 2008, the elder Hunter sought the Republican Party nomination for president, but dropped out after failing to gain traction among voters in early primaries and caucuses.

Challenger Kimber, a physicians assistant, said he knows he is in for a rough race, but he believes its worth it because hes frustrated by a polarized, paralyzed Congress.

Its a daunting task (running against such an established candidate); so, people throw their hands up in the air, he said and decline to even try. I guess I believe in serving my country.

The younger Hunter coasted to victory in 2008, winning 56 percent of the vote. In his most recent general election contest in 2012, Hunter bested Democratic nominee David Secor, 68 percent to 32 percent.

University of Virginias Center for Politics, which analyzes races, calls it a safe Republican district. Hunters seat, Claremont McKenna College political science professor Jack Pitney said, remains a lock.

Unless it turns out that he has a secret life as a cat burglar, he has a pretty firm grip on his seat, Pitney said.

Pitney added that the district has the highest Republican share of voters of any district in California. Mitt Romney won it by 22 percentage points.

Additionally, Hunter is far ahead of his challengers in the money game. He has $398,979 on hand, while Kimber has spent more than he has raised and Benoit has not yet started fundraising. Benoit said he will start raising money after the June 3 primary, if he emerges as one of the top two finishers.
