Italian police seize 37 tons of drugs designed for ISIS in Libya – RT

Published time: 8 May, 2017 18:33

Police in the northern Italian city of Genoa have intercepted a huge drug shipment bound for Libya. Tons of psychotropic medications, destined for Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), were seized in cooperation with the Italian customs office.

The shipment contained 37.5 tons of tramadol a synthetic opioid used in treating pain and also actively used across the Middle East as a narcotic substance. The haul also included Captagon, known as the fighter drug an amphetamine-containing substance used by jihadists in several Middle Eastern war zones to enhance battle performance, the Italian La Repubblica newspaper reported citing investigators.

The drugs were stored in three freight containers that docked in Genoa from India and were bound for Libya. It was initially shipped from India to Sri Lanka, where it was hidden, Italian Ticino News broadcaster reports. The drugs were disguised as shampoo and synthetic fabrics.

The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around 75 million ($ 81.96 million), the paper reports. The drug money would likely go on financing terrorist activities and particularly Islamic State, the investigators said.

The investigation and the seizure was led and coordinated by the district prosecuting attorney of the anti-terrorist department, Federico Manotti. From Libya, the drugs would be sent to other regions controlled by Islamic State, particularly to Mosul and some districts of Tobruk, according to the investigators.

The seizure has led investigators to suspect that some terrorist supporters involved in drug trafficking are now hiding somewhere in Italy, the Liguria Notizie media outlet reports.

In March, a maritime analytics firm Windward warned that cargo ships which go dark in European waters could be involved in arms, drugs or human trafficking and eventually pose a terrorist threat.

Windward claims that vessels from other home ports went dark on 2,850 occasions before entering European waters in January and February 2017. Some 300 ships reached European shores with invalid shipping documents.

Libyan National Reconciliation Conference (NRCLibya) 20th May 2017

In effort to open dialogue between key Libyan figures within Britain, Alrassed International and Tamadon Foundation will be holding a conference on the 20th May. The aim of which to bring together those who may be able to begin to effect a change in the current situation in Libya.

As political infighting hampers progress towards any form of solidarity, there is a need to initiate talks between different parties. The main aim: How can Libyans in Britain assist movements towards national reconciliation within Libya? This before being put towards a wider audience involving international organisations in June.

We aim to bring together representatives from all sectors of Libyan society: academic, political, religious, and youth organisations. From there we intend to allow a forum from which opinions can be shared; working towards a constructive settlement of how a peaceful settlement may be initiated within Libya. The following conference will seek to build on the first, drawing in more individuals from an international footing and allow a greater input.

The main factors faced are the divided nature of the Libyan people. As civil war continues to polarise the nation, those who live and operate outside of Libya often still possess strong affiliations with groups and organisations within Libya.

Many have legitimate grievances from past events and those that continue to this day. Before positive steps can be taken, some form of trust must be rebuilt between the peoples of Libya. This can only be achieved through open discussion.

We seek to enable an unbiased peace process that will lead to bringing to Libyas people. What is needed is a form of unifying factor that might allow all groups within Libya to work towards a common goal; ultimately, reconciliation. Without this further fighting seem inevitable, and the voices of the people will continue to be silenced with strong-arm approaches.

Italian Foreign Minister arrives in Libya to meet GNA Prime Minister – Libyan Express

The Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano today held talks in Tripoli with top Libyan officials on peace efforts for the war-wracked country and ways to curb illegal migration to Europe.

Alfano met Government of National Accord head Fayez al- Sarraj and his vice president Ahmad Meitig to discuss efforts being made towards national reconciliation, the GNA said in a statement.

Alfanos trip to Libya came hot on the heels of a two-day visit Thursday and Friday to the oil-rich North African nation by his British counterpart Boris Johnson.

Johnson met Sarraj today and congratulated him on meeting earlier this week in abu dhabi with Libyan military strongman Khalifa al-Haftar, who does not recognise the GNAs legitimacy.

Italy, too, has welcomed the meeting between Haftar and Serraj. The foreign ministry has said that Alfanos visit was aimed at renewing Italys support for peace efforts to ensure Libyas stability.

Alfano and Libyan leaders also discussed ways of curbing the influx of migrants trying to reach Europe from Libya, as authorities Saturday said that hundreds of migrants were rescued by the Libyan coastguard.

The Libyan judiciary in March suspended a deal struck the previous month between Libya and Italy aimed at bolstering joint efforts to stop the flow of migrants.

In April, the Italian government said that a dozen of rival tribes in southern Libya had agreed to cooperate on securing the countrys borders to prevent illegal migration
