President Trumps feud with the media turned into an all-out war Thursday afternoon.

His early presidency beset by damaging leaks and a burst of staff turmoil, Trump used a hastily called press conference to blast the medias coverage of his administration in his strongest terms yet. He claimed the press is out of control, reports on his teams ties to Russia are fake, and news outlets are attacking him because they oppose his agenda.

"The medias trying to attack our administration because they know we are following through on the pledges that we made, and theyre not happy about it," Trump declared at the White House.

The president spoke and took questions for more than an hour and 15 minutes, even joking with some reporters toward the end and saying he was having fun. In a bid to preempt negative coverage of his remarks, Trump insisted he was not "ranting and raving." But he lamented that the "tone" of coverage of his administration is one of "such hatred."

"The public doesn't believe you people anymore," he said.

Trump, who is dealing with the roughest stretch of his nascent presidency so far, unleashed the battery of accusations after first announcing his newest pick for labor secretary. After his original nominee withdrew, Trump nominated law school dean and former federal prosecutorAlexander Acosta for the post Thursday.

"He has had a tremendous career," Trump said, noting he's been through Senate confirmation three times for past positions.

But Trump pivoted to tout his administration's record so far and to blast the media for allegedly underplaying progress made.

"The press honestly is out of control," Trump said, vowing to take his message "straight to the people."

Amid a court fight over his controversial immigration executive order, which he maintained is lawful, Trump said he would announce a "new and very comprehensive order to protect our people."

He also staunchly defended his administrations work on everything from the economy to energy to security. "This administration is running like a fine-tuned machine, he said.

The press conference was held days after Michael Flynn resigned as national security adviser over a controversy regarding his past contacts with Russias ambassador. Those contacts emerged in news reports. Fast food chain CEO Andrew Puzder also withdrew from consideration for labor secretary on Wednesday amid deepening scrutiny of his personal and professional past.

Trump on Thursday personally denied having any contact or connections with Russia, saying: "I have nothing to do with Russia. I have no deals there. I don't know anything."

While acknowledging he sought Flynns resignation, he also said Flynn was just doing his job by contacting Russia. He said Flynn was asked to resign because he was dishonest about the details of the call with Vice President Mike Pence.

And he dismissed recent reports that campaign aides had been in contact with Russian officials before his election. Trump called the reports a "ruse" and said he had "nothing to do with Russia." Trump added, "Russia is fake news. This is fake news put out by the media."

In a free-wheeling event that, before Trump, would have been unprecedented in a modern presidential news conference, the president by turns teased and lambasted members of the press corps.

Toward the end of the press conference, Trump summed up his complaints by suggesting he was being blamed for problems that have existed for years:I didnt come along and divide this country. This country was seriously divided before I got here.

He also blasted Senate Democrats for holding up his Cabinet nominees.

His latest pick for Labor Department might have an easier time. If confirmed, Acosta would be Trumps first Latino Cabinet member. According to top GOP sources, Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and other Hispanic leaders are enthused about the pick.

Acosta currently is dean of Florida International University College of Law. He previously served as the first Hispanic assistant attorney general and as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, as well as on the National Labor Relations Board.

In the wake of the Flynn reports and other damaging stories, Trump also has vowed to root out those leaking sensitive information.

Were going to find the leakers. ... Theyre going to pay a big price for leaking, Trump said at a meeting ahead of the press conference.

President Trump blasted the "out of control" dishonesty of the mainstream media during a Thursday press conference, accusing reporters of distorting facts to help special interests.

"Many of our nation's reporters and folks will not tell you the truth and will not treat you with the respect you deserve," Trump said from the White House's East Room.

Trump later pushed back at reports his administration is in "chaos."

"I turn on the TV and open the newspaper and sees stories of chaos. Chaos," Trump said.

"Yet it is the exact opposite. This administration is running like a fine-tuned machine, despite the fact I can't get my Cabinet approved."

Trump accused the media of targeting him as retribution for his election victory.

"In other words, the media is trying to attack our administration because they know we are following through on pledges we made and they are not happy about it, for whatever reason."

"I was given that information, I dont know. We had a very, very big margin. I was given that information. Actually Ive seen that information around, but it was a very substantial victory," he said.

Minutes earlier, reading off what appeared to be scripted remarks, Trump lauded a new poll from the conservative-leaning Rasmussen that found he holds a 55 percent approval rating, significantly higher than other recent polls.

As he blasted the media for its low approval rating, Trump said he believes it's a public good to correct the media.

"Theres nobody I have more respect for, well maybe a little bit, than good reporters. Its very important to me, especially in this position," he said.

"I dont mind bad stories, I can handle a bad story better than anybody, as long as its true."

Donald Trump has launched an extensive attack on the US media, saying "the level of dishonesty is out of control".

In a news conference, he said: "The media is trying to attack our administration because they know we are following through on pledges we made and they're not happy about it."

"But a lot of people are happy about it."

Sky's US correspondent Cordelia Lynch described the attack on the media as "unprecedented".

She said: "The White House has criticised media in past plenty of times, but this kind of attack on journalists is unprecedented."

In the news conference, which went for 1 hour and 16 minutes, Mr Trump also said: "Many of our nation's reporters will not tell you the truth. And will not treat the wonderful people of this country with the respect they deserve.

"I hope going forward things can be a little bit different and maybe get along a little bit better. Maybe it's not. That's okay too.

"Much of the media in Washington DC, along with New York, Los Angeles, in particular, speaks not for the people but for those profiting off a obviously very broken system.

"The press has become so dishonest and if we don't talk about it we are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people, because the press is out of control. The level of dishonesty is out of control.

"I am here to change the broken system so it serves their families well. I am talking about this entrenched power structure.

"Too often times the media distort. And some of the media's fantastic but much of it is not.

"But we're not going to let it happen."

Many of his comments focused on the media's stories about the administration's dealings with Russia, singling out the New York Times for a "discredited" front page.

He attacked the leaks that had come from inside his administration because of its "classified" nature, much if which, he claimed, was "fake news".

He said: "It's now starting to turn. People giving out illegal classified information.

"I called, as you know, Mexico. It was a very confidential, classified call. All of a sudden it's out there for the world to see. It's supposed to be secret. Same thing with Australia.

"All of a sudden people are finding out exactly what took place. The same thing happened with General Flynn.

"The first thing I thought when I saw this was how does the press get this classified information? You know why, because it's an illegal process. And the press should be ashamed of themselves.

"What happens when I'm dealing with North Korea? What happens when I'm dealing with the Middle East? Are you folks going to be reporting all that?

"We are going to stop it. That's why it's a criminal penalty.

"The leaks are real, but the news is fake because so much of the news is fake."

He was then asked by a reporter from CNN, another of the targets of his attacks, whether he accepted that his earlier campaign calls for Russia to release hacked Hillary Clinton emails and admissions that he worked with Wikileaks left him with little credibility.

Mr Trump replied: "In one case you are talking about highly classified information. In the other you are talking about what John Podesta (Mrs Clinton's campaign chairman) said, but it wasn't classified.

"The public, they read newspaper and watch television, they don't know if its true or false because they are not involved. I'm involved.

"I know when you are telling the truth and when you're not and I see tone. The tone is hatred. I'm really not a bad person. You look at your 10 o'clock show. The panel is almost exclusive anti-Trump and the hatred and venom coming from his mouth. The public gets it. They turn around and want to throw their placards at CNN.

"Tomorrow they will say 'Donald Trump rants and raves about the press'. I'm not ranting and raving. I'm just telling you, you are dishonest people.

"The public doesn't believe you anymore. If you were straight and told it like it is, I would be your biggest fan in the world, including stories about me.

"But with CNN, it is story after story that is bad. I won and this is a fine-tuned machine. That's why the public sees it. They see the bias and the hatred."

He said one of the reasons why he had such a problem with the media was because the stories they publish and broadcast make it harder to get along with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He said what could be interpreted as Russian actions designed to test the news administration, such as a Russian ship coming close to the US, are not tests, they are because Mr Putin "assumes he can't make a deal with me anymore".

He also said he did not have to say what he was going to do about Russia, Mosul, Iran or North Korea.

"You guys are going to ask but I'm not going to tell you," he said.

On October 7, 2016, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued a consultation paper on amendments clarifications to the Sebi (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013. Though it contained several points, Sebis plan to curb the practice of providing trading tips messages containing buy sell hold recommendations on securities (i.e. point number 4.5.2) got maximum attention.

If this discussion paper is accepted without any change, no person will be allowed to provide trading tips and stock-specific recommendations to the public through short message services (SMSs), email, phone etc or through social media like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, etc. unless such persons obtain registration as an investment adviser or are specifically exempted from obtaining registration.

Since it was construed as Sebis effort to censor social media, there was a furore against this consulting paper. Instead of expressing their views through proper channel (by replying to Sebi), most on social media decided to troll Sebi. Some of the tweets were repetitive (i.e. same words were tweeted by several twitter handles) giving hints that some of these tweets are done by bots and paid by someone.Several eminent personalities also expressed their opinion against this social-media censoring.

Maybe because of these social media uproar, Sebi seems to have soft-pedalled this without taking any further action and the problem of tips continues unabated.First, this has become a big irritation for investors because most of these tips are unsolicited (eg unsolicited SMSes, emails, tagging investors into their tip posts, etc). Second, some investors or shortterm traders have started believing in these tips and thereby losing money. Since most of these tip providers do front-running (i.e. first buy a stock and then give buy recommendations on it), this also amounts to market manipulation.

WHAT SEBI SHOULD DO We are not suggesting censoring the social media because it is impractical. But definitely , Sebi need to be alert on this front and to create specific mechanisms so that investors can complain immediately. For example, Sebi can create a specific phone number email to which investors can forward all unwanted tips received through SMSs email. Investors who lost money based on some tips also should be allowed to complain using similar method.

Similarly, Sebi can create separate ids for Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc. Since investors will be forwarding this voluntarily , collating data like this will be far easier than scanning social media for manipulation. Sebi can also treat these forwards as complaint and take action without waiting for a formal complaint. What mentioned above is the tips (both solicited and unsolicited) from unregistered entities. But what about the registered ones?

Sebi consulting paper also says research analysts or research entity shall provide the research report to all class of clients at the same time. This is a great move and will stop the current practice of giving the research reports to institutional clients first and then only to retail subscribers.

To clean up stock research and to make more transparent, Sebi needs to force research analysts and research entities to keep their old reports in a common place (some research houses are already doing it by publishing on their sites).

This will help existing client of one research house to know the capability of other houses. To protect the interest of existing clients (i.e.who either pay for reports or accessing reports due to brokerage accounts), this public posting can be done after a week.
