Striking the balance on social media

When the prime minister came back to work after he fell sick with E.coli earlier last week, his Twitter followers knew of his recovery before it was reported in the media as he had tweeted it. In fact, it was his tweet that later became a news report, instead of any statement from his office.

Earlier this year, when the whole nation focused its attention to a high-profile criminal appeal in the Federal Court, Twitter users knew real time what was submitted in Court from the tweets of the people who observed the proceedings. They did not have to wait for news report to find out what happened in the proceedings.

These are some of the examples of how social media has changed the way we obtain information and how we interact with each other.

Before the advent of the Internet, information was monopolised by the State. The State could dictate and control the information that filtered to the masses.

When the Internet happened, this monopoly slowly eroded. First, there were alternative websites, offering information that was different from what you could get in the mainstream. Then came the blogs, which basically allowed the people to share information on the Internet in a form of a journal. But the biggest development was the emergence of social media; with it, everyone can share content.

This perakyatan maklumat, or democratisation of information broke the monopoly of information held by the State. With social media and the Internet revolution, the State is but one of the very many merchants in the marketplace of information.

China State Media Make Feisty Start in New Year

BEIJING

China's state media released a series of editorial and opinion pieces in recent days that featured some blunter-than-usual commentaries on censorship and the governments tight control over news.

Earlier in the week, when Chinese officials confirmed a North Korean soldier had crossed the border and killed four residents in Chinas northeast, the Global Times, a tabloid newspaper owned by the Communist Partys mouthpiece, the Peoples Daily, was not pleased.

In an editorial, the Times, which regularly gives government positions strong backing, accused authorities of embarrassing domestic media by slowly releasing information.

"It is inappropriate that no voice over the case, involving the death of four Chinese citizens, has been heard from the Chinese side for more than a week, until it was first reported by a South Korean news agency," the editorial said.

It went on to note that whenever diplomatic incidents occur in China, the public typically learns what has happened from foreign media or third-party reports.

"Chinese authorities and the mainstream media have no excuse for maintaining this norm," the editorial said.

Recent criticism not a 'one-off' event

That was not the first time this week that the Global Times took authorities to task for poor communication between the public and the media.

It also weighed in on a decision by censors to temporarily pull a popular historical Chinese drama, "The Empress of China," from airwaves. The show was removed so censors could edit out scenes that revealed too much of the main stars cleavage.

John Malone transfers control of TripAdvisor to Liberty CEO

On Dec. 22, a week before Greg Maffei re-upped as CEO of Liberty Media, chairman John Malone gave the executive control of TripAdvisor, regulatory filings show.

Perhaps Malone thought of the move as a signing bonus or a holiday gesture.

But for control-freak Malone, swapping his super-voting shares in Liberty TripAdvisor for Maffeis common shares was unprecedented, sources said.

Maffei thought so, too.

[Malone] became an A holder and I became the B holder, Maffei said at a conference on Wednesday, of the exchange that loaded him up with 10-votes-per-share Class B Liberty TripAdvisor stock.

Maffei then explained that, given Malones wealth and portfolio, it wasnt a huge amount and front-and-center in his mind. So he was probably kind enough to say, Greg, you take this one.

It was so kind that Maffeis interviewer noted, Its the first time Ive ever seen you turn red. However, on delving into the details, the exchange wasnt as simple as it seems.

Maffei gave Malone 3.0 million common A shares valued at $26.97per share, or $82.2 million on the day of the exchange.

Malone, in turn, gave Maffei 2.8 million super-voting B shares valued at $26.66 a share, or $73.9 million.

This means the package Malone received from the exchange netted him $8.3 million.
