Pence plane missed runway target by nearly 2000 feet, NTSB says – CNN

(CNN)The plane carrying then-vice presidential candidate Mike Pence that skidded off a New York runway last fall was nearly 2,000 feet off the normal touchdown point and skidded off the landing strip at about 45 miles per hour, according to new details released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Moderate to heavy rain was falling at New York's LaGuardia Airport on October 27, 2016, when the chartered Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Fort Dodge, Iowa, came in for a landing. At the time, other pilots reported that the runway was wet but landing conditions were "fair" or "good."

The details of the incident -- which resulted in no serious injuries to the 48 occupants, though three flight attendants were briefly taken to the hospital to be checked out for back pain -- were made available Thursday in nearly 400 pages of documents. A full report won't be released for at least several months, so a final conclusion as to why the plane failed to properly land has not yet been reached.

What is made clear in the documents, however, is that the when the plane finally landed -- traveling at about 150 miles per hour -- there was less than 2,800 feet of runway left. The automatic speed breaks on the airplane were out of service, so the crew planned to follow a procedure to manual deploy them.

The speedbreaks didn't fully extend until the plane had traveled an additional 1,250 feet down the runway, and eight seconds took place between touchdown and the time max reverse thrust was initiated, according to the documents.

In a transcript of the plane's cockpit voice recorder, the pilots can be heard talking about the incident shortly after the plane stops.

"We should have went around," one of the pilots says, according to the transcript.

"My career just ended," one adds as they prepare the plane for shut down. "Mine too," the other replies.

A Secret Service agent is recorded entering the cockpit to check on the situation. After being assured no evacuation is necessary, he compliments the pilots.

"Nice job," the agent tells the pilots, according to the transcript.

"Huh?" one of the pilots responds.

"Nice job. You stopped at least," the agent replies.

The plane that was carrying Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence sits on the runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport October 27, 2016 in New York.

There was some confusion in the cockpit after the plane touched down and as the crew was trying to make it stop.

First officer James Conrad told investigators he later realized the captain, Michael Lorenz, had started trying to control the plane as they were rolling down the runway, without announcing he was taking over.

Gov. Pence: Pilots braking very aggressively 01:38

"He felt that there was a 'lack of communication' as he did not hear the captain say, 'I have control,'" according to a summary of the first officer's interview. "After they had stopped, the captain had said he was trying to get off on the last taxiway. Then, he (the first officer) realized that the captain was also on the controls when he was."

The first officer also declined to answer several questions about the captain.

"When asked how he enjoyed flying with the captain, he declined to provide an answer," a document says. "When asked about the captain's proficiency or for areas that could be improved, when compared to others he had flown with, he declined to answer."

Occupants inside the 737 were confused and startled as they immediately realized the landing was not going smoothly. Reporters, located near the back of the jet, could feel the initial skidding before the plane ran into safety material, designed to crumble beneath the plane at the end of the runway.

Once the plane had stopped, Pence came to the back of the aircraft to check on reporters and the Secret Service, asking if everyone was all right.

Fire and ambulance surrounded the airplane within minutes and evacuated it. The future vice president and his staff stepped onto the runway into the rain. Half of the plane was on the grass.

At the time, Pence told reporters he felt the plane fishtail after it landed, but added that he kept a saying from his son, who is a Marine Corps aviator, in his mind following the incident: "Every landing you walk away from is a successful landing."

Since being elected vice president, Pence usually flies US Air Force aircraft.

Mike Pence Isn’t Sure Why So Many People Think Climate Change Is A ‘Paramount Issue’ – HuffPost

Vice President Mike Pencesaid Friday that he doesnt understand why so many people are making such a big deal out of climate change, a phenomenon connected to such global issues as declining food security andwildlife populations.

Pence mocked the liberal left for condemning President Donald Trumps decision to pull out of the historic Paris Agreement, an international pact that aims to curb global warming by reducing carbon emissions.

For some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world,Pence said during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

At least 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human activity has significantly contributed to the climate-warming trends of the past century, which threaten biodiversity and coastal communities and have contributed to an increase in extreme weather events.

Environmental activists, major corporations and world leaders wereoutragedwhen Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. would withdraw from the historic accord.

The U.S. decision to leave the #ParisAgreement is a decision to leave humanitys last chance of securing our childrens future on this planet, tweeted Margot Wallstrm, Swedens minister of foreign affairs.

But Pence dismissed any apocalyptic predictions surrounding Trumps decision, noting that the U.S. has already demonstrated real progress in reducing carbon emissions.

Its long been a goal of the liberal left in this country to advance a climate change agenda, Pence said.

With Hannity under fire, Mike Pence comes to the rescue – ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Fox News screengrab

Without evidence and against the wishes of the family, Fox News Sean Hannity continues to push a discredited conspiracy about the murder of Seth Rich. On his TV show and other platforms, Hannity is using the deceased DNC staffer as part of a desperate attempt to discredit t the U.S. intelligence communitys conclusion that Russian hackers sought to bolster Donald Trumps presidential bid.

Hannitys exploitation a young mans murder has caused some advertisers to sever ties with him. But Hannity, notwithstanding his pledge to stop talking about Rich, has pressed forward. As recently as Tuesday night told his viewers hed have a lot more coming probably sooner than later about Rich.

Vice President Mike Pence rewarded Hannitys conduct with an appearance on his show Thursday night. The vice president came on to talk about Trumps decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord following an opening monologue where Hannitywho has been working with a new right-wing group targeting liberal TV hosts advertisers for no particular reasonissued a thinly veiled threat to other hosts.

Tonight, it is time to fight fire with fire, Hannity said. Where are the so-called champions of civil rights and freedom of speech on the left? Why arent liberal commentators like Bill Maher and Steve Colbert, why arent they speaking out defending freedom of speech? And by the way, why has not one liberal cable news host stood up for me and my right to freedom of speech?

Hannity obliquely referred to the Rich situation during his interview with Pence.

Ive actually really be fighting for my career lately so Ive been a little busy with other topics, Hannity said, while introducing a fawning question to Pence.

I think this is really the only show in America that has listed the presidents accomplishments, and I noticed when he was in the Rose Garden today that he went through part of that list that never seem to get reported, Hannity continued. What are you most proud of and what do you see coming?

Hannitys approach to interviewing Pence is in line with how hes treated Trump. Hannity and Trump used a White House interview conducted the week after the inauguration to discredit other media outlets and uncritically restate Trump administration talking points.

After Hannity broached the topic of how other outlets have covered President Trump by saying, the New York Times, CNN, ABCthey use the word liar to describe you, Trump interjected with, these are very hostile, angry people the media is very dishonest. They are very dishonest people.

I said journalism is dead, so we agree, Hannity replied. He also said the media colluded against you on the campaign.

During the Republican primaries, Hannity interviewed Trump 41 times without ever coming even close to making news. He asked questions like, Im sure you wish you were wrong, Mr. Trump, but you were right. What did you see that maybe others didnt see about what was happening in Brussels and Belgium?

Mike Pence Makes A Fool Out Of Himself Trying To Defend Trump’s Paris Agreement Decision – PoliticusUSA

Vice President Mike Pence went beyond the usual Republican argument against combating climate change, and instead foolishly claimed that he has no idea why the world, which he characterized as the left, is concerned about climate change.

Video of Pence on Fox and Friends:

Pence said, Weve demonstrated real leadership. Weve demonstrated real progress, but for some reason or another, this issue of climate change has emerged as a paramount issue for the left in this country and around the world. Through Kyoto through President Obamas cap and trade agenda, and then in the last year of his administration have America saddled in an international agreement in the Paris accord, I think put a real burden on our economy and our people.

The Paris agreement was signed by every country but war-torn Syria, and Nicaragua, who believed that the agreement didnt go far enough.

Paris isnt an agreement of the left. It is an agreement of the entire world, so Pence was not honest. The goals for the United States in the Paris accord were voluntary, so Trump could have lowered them to zero if he wanted to, and still stayed in the deal. America was never saddled with anything. Obama never had a cap and trade agenda, and the economy grew at record levels under Obama with solar energy jobs doubling, and more people employed in solar than are employed in oil and gas.

Pence made a fool out of himself as he tried to defend a decision that only benefits polluters with nonsense.

Nothing that Vice President said was true. His defense didnt make sense. There is a reason why Pence is only appearing on conservative media to defend Trump. What this president did was indefensible.

He abandoned US global leadership.

In moments like these, it is easy to see that Pence has completely tied his future to Trump. When Trump goes down, Mike Pence is going with him.
