Harrop: Follow Obama’s lead on border – The Columbian

The president most effective at addressing our border crisis was a Democrat named Barack Obama.

He did two things:

No. 1: He championed a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would have legalized the status of many undocumented migrants already here but also required employers to check their new hires immigration status through an electronic database.

No. 2: He cranked up the deportation of undocumented migrants, mainly criminal offenders. By showing he meant business, Obama undoubtedly intended to reassure Americans that the proposed reform would not be just some new amnesty. It would start enforcing the law.

In doing so, Obama bravely endured the slings and arrows from advocates who bashed him as deporter in chief. Obama had guts.

The bill passed the Senate on a bipartisan vote. It would have gotten through the House with Republican votes, but Speaker John Boehner let it die. He was too chicken to allow a vote on a measure that most Republican members opposed.

On this issue, Donald Trump is a total blowhard.

His talk is tough. His spine is Jell-O.

Obama removed 60 percent more undocumented immigrants in his first term than Trump did. And the reform bill would have spent $8 billion on fencing at the southern border.

By the way, where is Trumps wall?

It happens that several conservative states have passed laws requiring electronic verification of a job seekers right to employment. The E-Verify system is established and reliable.

Trump was asked whether he would do likewise on the national level. His response was: Oh, no, we cant do that. Its a very tough thing to ask a farmer to go through, Trump told Fox News in May 2019. They are not equipped to use E-Verify. Like farmers dont have laptops.

As long as undocumented migrants can get jobs in this country, theres no stopping their entry. Period.

The truth is this: Behind the baloney facade of demanding enforcement, Trump and many other Republicans really dont want to stop the flow of cheap labor.

Trump himself has been an avid user of illegal workers at Trump Tower, at his golf properties. His contractors are known to pick up groups of them at the sides of roads.

As for President Joe Biden, hes being slammed for not taking a more muscular approach on the border, particularly the messed-up asylum system.

The numbers seeking asylum grew under Trump as well, but they are rapidly expanding now. That is a problem for Biden.

Because they can stay in the U.S. in the six or more years it takes to have their cases heard, many economic migrants are using claims of asylum to speed up their entry.

Making matters worse, federal law lets asylum-seekers into the country but bars them from working.

It could take a year or more to get work authorization. And thats why were seeing the shelters overflowing with refugees in New York, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia and elsewhere.

How are asylum-seekers expected to pay rent and feed themselves and their families? former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg asks. This amounts to state-enforced poverty and vagrancy.

Its insane to admit immigrants with no money and no right to legally earn it.

Adding to the craziness is that these are mostly hardworking people in places that need their labor.

Their predicament could be fixed with 10 words of English and a job.

Comprehensive immigration reform is still the answer. And if Joe Biden wants to be elected again, he has to aggressively push it. Talk to Obama about that.

Could we have an immigration system thats orderly, that respects our laws and that meets their countrys labor needs?

Yes, we can.

Pence: Biden Told Him ‘Stay Close to the President’ During Transition Between Obama, Trump – The Messenger

Former Vice President Mike Pence says then-Vice President Joe Biden offered him some words of advice during the presidential transfer of power from the Obama Administration to the Trump Administration in 2017.

"He did give me some advice," Pence said during a town hall with NewsNation on Wednesday. "It was, 'stay close to the president and build that relationship.' And I will tell you, for all the faults of the Obama-Biden years, they had a good working relationship."

Biden and then-President Barack Obama were known to have a close friendship and working relationship throughout their administration, once making each other friendship bracelets, and have remained close during Biden's time in the White House.

"And I will tell you, It didnt end the way I wanted it to, but Im very proud of the relationship I had with President Trump during our four years," Pence added, referring to former President Donald Trump and Pence's disagreement over the vice president's decision to certify the 2020 election, declaring Biden as president, rather than challenging it as Trump had asked.

The former vice president and current presidential hopeful said he "would always be proud" of what he and Trump accomplished during their time in White House.

Pence, Trump, and Biden are all making White House bids in 2024.

Obama Foundation Backs Away From Tiger Woods Golf Course In … – Block Club Chicago

WOODLAWN Former President Barack Obamas foundation distanced itself this week from plans to combine two South Side golf courses into a professional-level course near his eponymous center.

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods design firm, TGR Design, signed on in 2016 to combine the 18-hole Jackson Park and nine-hole South Shore golf courses into a single, PGA Tour-caliber course. Obama called Woods to take up the project, the Tribune reported in 2018.

The project, estimated to cost at least $70 million, has divided neighbors. Some South Siders have raised concerns with the projects environmental impacts and its potential to price out neighborhood golfers who have used the courses for decades.

Obama Foundation officials stepped back from the long-stagnant plans Thursday. CEO Valerie Jarrett told Crains Chicago Business shes only heard rumors that a golf course overhaul is even still in play. The foundation is not pursuing the project, Jarrett said.

Obama Foundation spokesperson Courtney Williamsdid not directly answer questions about whether the organization has pulled its support for the golf course.

The Obama Foundation is singularly focused on opening the presidential center in Jackson Park in 2025, Williams told Block Club on Friday. Foundation leaders remain supportive as they always have been of investment projects in our community and in Jackson Park, Williams said in a statement.

The Foundation has a catalytic role to play in the neighborhood, and were excited when we see other community organizations come together to lead these projects, she said.

Block Club has reached out to Woods design firm for comment.

The golf course overhaul has stalled in the seven years since former Mayor Rahm Emanuel enthusiastically announced Woods firm would oversee the project.

Fundraising challenges and a tepid response to the plans from local leaders, including former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, have been some of the holdups.

Project backers hoped the plan would be more front and center in local officials minds once the Obama Presidential Center broke ground in 2021, the Sun-Times reported, but theres been little movement since.

Its clear the community doesnt know whats going on with the golf course plans, Ald. Desmon Yancy (5th) told Block Club in May. If Woods and his supporters were ready to build the course today, hed tell them to pause and begin a difficult community engagement process with neighbors, Yancy said.

In 2022, three 5th Ward precincts overwhelmingly supported an advisory referendum calling on preserving trees in Jackson Park and South Shore Cultural Center Park that could have been cleared to make way for the golf course.

The proposed course called for replacing theSouth Shore Nature Sanctuarywith portions of the new courses14th and 15th holes.

Ald. Leslie Hairston, Yancys predecessor, drew outrage from locals in 2019 after falsely claiming the South Shore Nature Sanctuary was dead. Hairston made the comments at the suburban Medinah Country Club as Woods geared upfor a tournament there.
