Obama Appears on YouTube to Advance State of Union Priorities

President Barack Obama appeared on YouTube to answer questions from three of the video websites personalities in an effort to draw attention to priorities from his State of the Union speech and bypass conventional media.

Obama, speaking with hosts of three YouTube channels from the White Houses East Room for about 45 minutes on Thursday, discussed Cuba policy, gay marriage, marijuana legalization, drones and his most desired super power: the ability to speak any language.

Obamas appearance on Google Inc. (GOOGL)s YouTube is part of a White House effort to connect with more Americans than those who watched the Jan. 20 speech live, or saw news coverage. The administration also posted a copy of his entire speech online before Obama began talking and detailed one of his proposals on Facebook the week before.

More and more there are audiences that get turned off by the traditional news shows, Obama told the YouTube hosts, GloZell Green, Hank Green and Bethany Mota, after they concluded one-on-one sessions with him.

Obama defended his executive actions to normalize relations with Cuba.

Not everybody in Cuba is able to escape to the United States, he said. The goal in Cuba is to make sure theres freedom in Cuba, not just for the people who came to the U.S.

Obama reiterated his support for gay marriage while calling same-sex relationships a lifestyle choice.

During the interviews, each YouTube host talked about himself and presented Obama with a token gift or asked for an autograph or photo.

It is an effort to engage with as many Americans as possible, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Thursday aboard Air Force One.

YouTube channels run by the three people with whom Obama appeared reach nearly 19 million followers, according to statistics provided by Google, which owns the YouTube video service.

Obama Seeks Support for Agenda in Republican Dominated States

President Barack Obama, in what he said was the fourth quarter of his presidency, stood on a stage set upon a football field and made the pitch that his policies still have a chance even with Republican control of Congress.

Standing in front of a banner reading Middle-Class Economics, Obama said Idaho, a state that only gave him about a third of the vote both times he ran for president, was an example for the nation on investing in technology and education, two key parts of Obamas economic platform.

Those are things that, traditionally, all of us can agree on, Obama said Wednesday. He conceded theres a big divide on how to pay for it.

Obama and Congress already are preparing to engage in several funding fights this year, starting with appropriations for the Homeland Security Department, which expire at the end of February, a transportation funding bill in May, and the federal debt limit later in the year.

Obamas stop in Boise is his first on a two-day, two-state trip planned to put emphasis on the message he delivered Tuesday in his State of the Union address and an agenda for his final two years in office.

Aides said the visits to Idaho and Kansas, two states dominated by the Republican Party and which he lost by wide margins in the 2008 and 2012 elections, were intended to show that some of the economic proposals hes making have bipartisan support.

The speeches, at Boise State University on Wednesday and the University of Kansas on Thursday, also put him in front of audiences of college students, a core constituency for the president. The cheering Boise throng of about 6,600 stood in contrast to the U.S. House chamber hed addressed less than 24 hours before, where more than half of lawmakers ignored the applause lines in his speech.

We have to make these investments, he said, noting that government funds build roads and ports.

Obama said his plans would be paid for in part through changes in the tax code. The president and Republicans both have said they want to revamp the tax system to simplify it and close loopholes, though theyre far apart on the details.

Taking a tour on the campus, Obama stood in front of a 3-D printer in a Boise State engineering lab as technicians explained the mechanics of making prototypes. They showed him creations meant to mimic motorcycle parts and a printout of a patients human spine used to help surgeons identify problems before surgery.

Obama will pay respects to new Saudi King Salman

Story highlights White House: President Barack Obama will stop in Riyadh to pay respects to Saudi royals Obama is cutting short a visit to India to enable him to make the stop

Vice President Joe Biden was originally set to have led a delegation to Saudi Arabia on Obama's behalf.

However, the schedule for the President's departure from India has been adjusted to allow Obama to stop in Riyadh himself on his way home, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said.

Funeral services were held Friday for King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud, who died earlier that day. He was 90.

World leaders are now traveling to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, to offer condolences for Abdullah's death and pay their respects to the new ruler.

Abdullah was seen by many as a cautious reformer who succeeded in securing broader freedoms in the conservative kingdom, but fell short in gaining greater independence for women.

King Abdullah's legacy: 5 things to know

His successor, who is 79, faces a number of challenges as he takes up the reins, including Iran, the rise of ISIS, the crisis in neighboring Yemen and the drop in oil prices.

But Salman has plenty of experience to draw on, having served as defense minister and deputy prime minister of Saudi Arabia, a vital U.S. ally in the Middle East. Like Abdullah, he is one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdulaziz.

Obama is due to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday, on a trip intended to foster progress in sometimes thorny U.S.-India ties.

Obama seeks to leverage ties with India's Modi

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama will seek to leverage his burgeoning bond with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi into progress on climate change, defense and economic ties as he opens a three-day visit to New Delhi.

Relations between the U.S. and India have been strained in recent years, but Obama and Modi developed a good rapport during a visit in Washington last fall. Modi sought to return the favor by inviting Obama to travel to India as his guest for the annual Republic Day festivities, which mark the day in 1950 that the country's constitution came into force.

"It took us by some surprise," said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser. "There's a great affinity between the United States and India and our people, but there's also a history that is complicated and that would have made it seem highly unlikely that a U.S. president would be sitting with India's leaders at their Republic Day ceremony."

After some internal deliberations, the White House accepted Modi's offer. The visit also includes a fresh round of bilateral meetings with Modi, an economic summit with U.S. and Indian business leaders and a visit to India's famed Taj Mahal.

Obama will be the first U.S. president to visit India twice while in office; he also traveled there in 2010 for an economic summit. First lady Michelle Obama will be with the president when he arrives in New Delhi on Sunday.

The president's visit is expected to be heavy on symbolism and lighter on substantive advances, though climate change, economics and defense ties are all on the agenda. Indian political commentator Ashok Malik said expectations for concrete deliverables during the visit are "below the standards usually set by U.S. presidents when they travel across the world for a three-day visit."

Still, U.S. and Indian officials appear to agree that even a symbolic show of solidarity between the leaders would be a sign of progress after recent difficulties.

While military cooperation and U.S. defense sales have grown, Washington has been frustrated by India's failure to open up to more foreign investment and to address complaints alleging intellectual property violations. India's liability legislation has also prevented U.S. companies from capitalizing on a landmark civil nuclear agreement between the two countries in 2008.
