Buhari calls for prayers as Christians begin Lent

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari, has urged Nigerians to use this season of penance to reflect, meditate and pray to God for peace and the rebuilding of our nation.

Buhari made this appeal in a message to Nigerian Christians, as they joined other Christians worldwide in observing 40 days of fasting and prayers popularly called Lent.

He urged Nigerians especially Christians to use the annual period of repentance, sacrifice, fasting, prayers and alms-giving to intercede for the country.

He said, My dear brothers and sisters, as we pray daily for mercy from God, let these 40 days be for us, a greater opportunity to change our ways and our hearts so that God can heal our land; which is in dire need of leaders and citizens who will show love and care for the poor and the rejected in our midst, for whom, Jesus Christ also sacrificed and died for.

Let us abhor discrimination in our country on the grounds of ethnicity, religion, gender and political orientation and work for a united, peaceful and progressive Nigeria where few men and women will no longer have the pleasure and privilege to deprive the majority of our common wealth.

As you observe this very important spiritual exercise, I will also join you in prayers to God for the strength you need to go through this season and for the forgiveness of the sins we all have committed against God and humanity.

Sheriffs thugs attacked his campaign office Borno APC

The All Progressives Congress in Borno State on Tuesday distanced itself from the torching of the campaign office of the Peoples Democratic Partys senatorial candidate, Senator Modu Sheriff, in Maiduguri on Monday during the rally of the presidential candidate of APC, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), on a campaign visit to the state.

The party, in a statement on Tuesday, said the campaign office of Sheriff, who is the immediate past governor of the state, was torched by some of his aggrieved supporters, who had some problems with him.

APC, while describing the attack on the building, which is along the popular Sir Kashim Ibrahim Way in Maiduguri, as highly condemnable and most uncivilised to say the least, insisted that it should be distanced from such criminality.

In the statement by the Chairman of the Borno State chapter of the party, Alhaji Ali Dalori said, We found it very shocking that the spokesman for the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Inuwa Bwala, rushed to the media just while the attack was going on, pointing accusing fingers at supporters of the APC.

Bwala even went as far as alleging that the state Governor, Kashim Shettima, ordered the destruction.

The manner in which Bwala rushed to press has further confirmed the findings of our investigations that the whole thing was orchestrated by the PDP affiliated to former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff with the sole intent of causing political violence so as to create basis for elections not to be conducted in Borno State on March 28 and April 11, 2015.

This is because Sheriff does not stand to gain anything politically since he has lost out from being the PDP candidate for Borno Central Senatorial zone while his anointed candidate for the governorship, Alhaji Mohammed Imam, does not have the slightest chance of winning the governorship.

The party chairman added, On January 24, 2015, which was the day before the PDP held its Presidential campaign rally in Maiduguri, Governor Kashim Shettima who is the leader of the APC in Borno State, issued a statement he personally signed and made frantic appeal to all citizens of the state, especially youth supporters of the APC, not to disrupt public peace but to respect President Goodluck Jonathan and be of good behaviour.

Governor Shettima even went further by holding meetings with leaders of the APC in various wards with the sole aim of ensuring APC supporters did not cause a breach of public peace.

Indeed, Governor Shettimas efforts paid off as the PDP held an entirely peaceful rally on January 24, 2015.

Leaked audio: APC demands prosecution of Obanikoro, others

The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday demanded the immediate prosecution of all those involved in what it called the subversion of democracy during the Ekiti State Governorship elections.

This was contained in a statement issued at the end of the First Joint Leadership Meeting of the APC held at Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre, Abuja.

The statement, which was made public by the partys National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, resolved, among other things, to declare that it would not tolerate any further shift of the election date from March 28 and April 11.

It partly read, (the meeting resolved to demand the) Immediate and necessary disciplinary action for all individuals that were involved in the subversion of democracy in the June 21 Ekiti Governorship Election as revealed by the audio file released by Sahara Reporters.

They include: (a)Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh who should be immediately investigated by the Military authorities.

(b) The Hon. Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan who should immediately be relieved of his ministerial appointment.

(c) The former minister of state for Defence Affairs, Senator Musliu Obanikoro whose name has just been sent to the Senate for confirmation again as a minister. He must not be confirmed by the Senate and must be barred henceforth from holding any public office.

It also said, in line with the Court of Appeals decision on Monday that upheld an earlier judgment of the Sokoto Federal High Court that ruled as illegal, the participation of the military in the electoral process, the military should be kept away from election duties henceforth.

The party leaders also said, The reschedule election dates of the March 28 and April 11 remain sacrosanct as the party will not tolerate any further shift.

The use of the card reader for the election is non-negotiable, as contrary to the misinformation being disseminated that the use of card reader is not synonymous with electronic voting.

Dont arm-twist Jega to use TVC , APC tells Senate

The South-South zone of the All Progressives Congress has cautioned the Senate not to arm-twist the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to use the Temporary Voter Cards in the rescheduled general elections.

The National Vice-Chairman of APC (South-South), Mr. Hilliard Eta, said the summon of Jega by the upper chambers of the National Assembly to explain the use of the card reader machine was an attempt to arm twist the commission to resort to the old order of the TVC.

He also alleged that it was a plot by the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government to impose the use of TVC for the rescheduled polls.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his special adviser on media, Mr. Bassey Ita, the APC deputy national chairman described the move to introduce the use of TVC as an attempt to drag Nigeria back to the stone age where development was time-consuming and difficult because of the use of analogue devices.

He said the resolve of the PDP-led Senate to kick against the card reader using section 52 of the Electoral Act was another ploy to discredit the INEC and force it to go back to the use of the TVC, adding that should that be the case the ruling party would have dragged Nigeria centuries back.

The statement read in part, I was scandalized that the PDP-led senate would cite section 52 to justify their agitation against the use of the Permanent Voters Cards for an election they had initially conceded to participating in.

I was scandalized that even those who are masters of reason and logic could be bereft of logic and reason in defending Nigerias descend to analogue and backwardness.

This agrees with the saying that a man who is bereft of logic takes to violence. The latest antics is another violent approach to the elections that the PDP has decided to take after foisting the postponement agenda on the nation. The world is watching.

Meanwhile, Eta has condemned the violent explosion and disruption of the APC rally in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday by agents suspected to have been masterminded by the PDP.

The PDP has been divinely marked as agents of destruction; out to destabilise the progress of Nigeria. They would fail in their bid to destroy a country that God has ordained with the potential for being the mother of all black entities in the world, he said.

Ortom urges Benue CP to convene stakeholders summit

The All Progressives Congress, governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has appealed to the Benue Commissioner of Police, Mr Hyacinth Dagala, to convene a summit for political stakeholders to discuss on how to ensure peace in the state.

He made the appeal in Makurdi on Tuesday after lodging a formal complaint about the series of attacks on his supporters and his campaign offices across the state.

Ortom explained that since the beginning of the year, he had written to the state command to complain about the attacks but lamented that nothing had been done, adding that the most disturbing aspect was the report that the police allegedly provided cover for some of the attacks.

The former Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, said he would make efforts to discuss the development with his counterpart and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, urging the commissioner to convene a roundtable on the issue.

He disclosed that as a Christian, he believed that a man could receive nothing except it was given to him from above, saying there was no need to resort to self help.

Ortom commended the police commissioner for personally visiting his campaign headquarters to assess the level of damage and the other efforts to maintain law and order in the state.

The former minister reiterated his commitment to peace in the state, adding that he would do all in his power to ensure that the situation did not escalate.

Dagala assured Ortom that the police would make concerted efforts to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the arson.

He pledged to consult with the states Resident Electoral Commissioner and convene the roundtable as soon as possible while investigations would be conducted into the allegations of Police providing cover for the attackers.

Ortom proceeded to Gyado Villa, where he inspected two offices in which his supporters were attacked and called for restraint, stressing that vengeance belonged to God.
