Peterside escapes death as gunmen disrupt Rivers APC rally

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, escaped death on Tuesday as unknown gunmen disrupted the partys campaign rally in Okrika Local Government Area of the state.

Peterside was whisked away by security operatives in the midst of the deafening sound of sporadic gunshots few minutes after three explosives went off close to the campaign ground at the Okrika National Secondary School Field.

The initial bomb scare had caused a stampede as APC supporters took to their heels to avoid being hit by three separate explosions which were later confirmed to have been fireworks thrown into the scene by suspected mischief makers.

The party supporters that were dispersed by the three separate explosions immediately reconvened only to be sent out of the campaign venue by the sporadic gunshots.

Security agents went down on the ground after drawing their guns in a bid to spot out where the unknown gunmen were hiding to hit them back.

Buhari promises to free towns captured by BHaram

THE All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday promised to liberate captured towns in the North-East from the hold of Boko Haram insurgents.

Security operatives had hectic time controlling the unprecedented crowd that turned out to welcome Buhari to the state, which serves as the base of Boko Haram.

The state governor, Kashim Shettima, had on Sunday declared Monday a work-free day in the state and asked residents to troop out to show their love for Buhari.

Movements were paralysed, especially around the Ramat Square venue of the APC presidential rally.

At the Shehu of Bornos palace, Buhari said, I was here in 1975 as governor of the defunct North-East states, Im happy that I received a befitting welcome; if elected, I will focus on tackling the persistent insecurity affecting the North-East, it is not easy as the damage has been done.

Your Royal Highness, God willing if APC government is elected, all towns under Boko Haram control will be liberated and rebuilt. It was unfortunate that commercial activities were paralysed following the insecurity. In the past, hundreds of trailers loaded with goods took off from Maiduguri to various neighbouring countries, but presently the reverse is the situation.

Boko Haram ideology contradicts Islamic principles, because Islam does not allow senseless killings of innocent souls. It is unfortunate that innocent persons were being killed in mosques, churches and their houses. God willing, if APC government is elected we will restore the confidence in governance.

The Borno monarch, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, told the APC presidential candidate that, if elected, he should focus on restoration of peace, massive investment, re-construction of federal roads and ensure the success of oil exploration in the Lake Chad region.

The speeches at the rally were continually punctuated by the shouts of Sai Buhari.

Obasanjos exit from PDP, plus for APC El-Rufais campaigners

All Progressives Congress Campaign Council in Kaduna State on Monday said the exit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the Peoples Democratic Party would boost the fortunes of the opposition party in the rescheduled March 28 and April 11 elections in the country.

The APC Campaign Council in the state is the campaign outfit for the former Federal Capital Territory and the state governorship candidate, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, and the partys presidential candidate, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), for the 2015 general elections.

The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Suleiman Hunkuyi, who addressed newsmen at the El-Rufai Campaign Office in the state capital, noted that for the ex-president to dump the party he rode on to power for eight years, should be a source of concern to Nigerians.

He noted that if Obasanjo, a highly respected figure not only in Nigeria but the world over, should dump his party,it is a plus for the APC.

Hunkuyi added, Obasanjo is a highly respected figure in the country and if somebody of his calibre should get of the party that on which he rode on to power for eight years, then, it should be a source of concern to all Nigerians.

He will be highly welcomed to the party. If the party can receive him, its a plus for the APC, he said.

Meanwhile, the APC council said it would soon embark on a special campaign for the collection of the Permanent Voter Card in the state ahead of the rescheduled elections.

Though, the state is among the states to have collected the highest number of PVC so far, Hunkuyi noted that the council would not rest until those that were yet to pick up the PVCs do so.

According to the campaign chairman, until every eligible voter in the state reaches 100 per cent collection rate of the cards.

Kaduna state stands high in terms of the collection of the PVC in the country but we are not resting on our oars. We will embark on special campaign for those who are yet to collect their PVC to do so until we reach 100 per cent collection rate, he said.
