APC, Fayose clash over student leaders arrest

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has berated Governor Ayodele Fayose for the arrest of students leaders who participated in the campaign rally of the partys presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in the state on Saturday.

According to the opposition party, the National Vice-President, External, National Association of Nigerian Students, Tosin Ogunkuade, has been arrested on the order of the governor for addressing the crowd during Buhari campaign in the state on Saturday.

A statement by the APC state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said Ogunkuades offence was that the student leader highlighted the challenges facing the Nigerian students, saying the present government was not capable of addressing the hardships being faced by the students in accessing quality education.

He said to the applause of hundreds of students in attendance that Buhari presented a better hope for students in their educational pursuits, Olatubosun said.

But Fayose said that those arrested were the APC thugs caught with dangerous weapons and recruited by one APC member in the House of Representatives to terrorise supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Erijiyan and Ikogosi-Ekiti.

Olatubosun said thugs trailed Ogunkuade to Ikogosi-Ekiti just 24 hours after he spoke, where he and other students were seriously injured after they were attacked with machet and other dangerous weapons.

After these students were attacked at Ikogosi, they ran to Efon-Alaye Police Station to report the matter. To our surprise, the police detained them before they were transferred to Aramoko-Ekiti Police Station.

To our shock again, just this morning, one of their colleagues, Damilare Bewaji, who went to visit them at the Aramoko Police Station, was also arrested and detained by the police on the order of the governor, he added.

Olatunbosun described the arrest as one in the series of other attacks on the APC sympathisers and supporters after Saturdays campaign.

PDPs rally, a celebration of failure Kwara APC

The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Monday said the presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ilorin was a celebration of failure.

The states APC Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, in a statement on Monday, also called on the people of Kwara State and Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan on February 14 in order to salvage what he called profusely bleeding Nigeria.

He stated that Jonathan had nothing more to offer in his present capacity.

Buhari said, The presidential rally of the PDP in Ilorin was a celebration of failure.

We had expected the presidential candidate of the PDP, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to tell Kwarans why he deserves re-election and also offer solutions to the challenges before Nigeria but surprisingly, President Jonathan chose to waste the ample opportunity of the rally on political commentary.

Kwarans should note that since President Goodluck Jonathan failed to tell them why he deserves re-election during his scantily-populated presidential rally in Ilorin, Kwarans have the responsibility to massively vote him out of office.

Anyone who carefully listened to Mr. Presidents speech would mistake him for an inexperienced comedian who struggled in futility to impress his audience.

He added, Despite the disbursement of millions in Naira by President Jonathans foot-soldiers and Abuja politicians to induce Kwarans to attend the rally, the scantily populated rally shows that Kwara State is a no-go area for the PDP.

It is no longer news that President Jonathan has yet to fulfil any of the electoral promises he made to Kwarans in 2011. It is also apparent that Mr. President has no achievement whatsoever in Kwara State and we do not expect Mr. President to lay claim to false assertions or take credit for non-existing projects.

However, rather than his political commentary, it would have been of interest to the people of Kwara State if Mr. President had used the avenue of his presidential rally to tell them when he will refund the over N4bn the Kwara State Government used to execute and rehabilitate the Ilesha-Baruba-Chikanda international border road and federal road projects across the state.

PDP planning to militarise elections -APC

The All Progressives Congress in the South-South zone has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of plans to rig the February elections using military might and violence.

The APC also said the PDP is desperate to win the election going by the continued application of violence against APC supporters in Rivers State and other states in the South-South region.

But the Cross River State Chairman of PDP, Mr. John Okon, in a swift reaction, said the party has no plans to use military in any election, challenging the APC to put structures on ground that could win elections instead of resorting to propaganda.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Vice-Chairman, South-South, Mr. Hilliard Eta, the APC said the recent threat by ex-militants from the President Goodluck Jonathans home state of Bayelsa against opponents to his re-election bid was not to be taken lightly.

He said it was an indication that Jonathan had planned on militarising the election with a view of cancelling it or rigging it at the slightest opportunity.

Eta said, The recent deployment of soldiers to take possession of the Adokie Amasiemaka stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, for Jonathans campaign at the behest of the Presidency against the wish of Rivers people was indicative of Jonathans disregard for due process, useful advice and agreements.

Whenever the military are deployed in such capacity and orientation, it means a war situation is at hand. It shows the height of desperation that the PDP Presidency has introduced into the February election build up which may not end well.

The Rivers violence and the use of military might, in the case of the Adokie Amasiemaka stadium, are indications that same brute force would be contemplated and applied during the election in order to manipulate it in favour of the PDP especially in the south-south states.

Eta recalled that Jonathan has a penchant for failing to keep agreements and promises explaining that much as he failed to dredge the Calabar Port, implement the UNEP report on Ogoni, build roads and other infrastructure and of course pursue desperately a second term ambition against an earlier promise lends credence to our doubt for a free, fair and credible elections especially in the south-south states.

But reacting to the allegations, especially with regards to Cross River and one of the South-South states, the state chairman of PDP, Mr. John Okon, said the APC will always look for excuse to lose elections in the region because it is not firm on ground.

Heavy security as APC holds rally in Mushin

As the All Progressives Congress holds its electioneering rally at the Mushin area of Lagos metropolis, the Lagos State Police Command on Monday mounted heavy security at the crisis-prone place.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that to ensure a peaceful atmosphere, the police cordoned off the Abeokuta expressway at the Cappa and Olorunsogo ends.

The development ensured that vehicles did not come into Mushin from the Oshodi end of the road, a development that created gridlock as traffic was diverted to alternative routes.

NAN also noticed the presence of armed policemen who were combat-ready to avert any violence from miscreants that could disrupt the rally.

There was the Police Rapid Response Squad with their Armoured vehicles at rally venue.

The situation kept the so called Area Boys in check as they were seen falling in line with instructions by the policemen on how to go about at the rally.

Speaking with NAN, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said the police had always been prepared to nip violence in the bud.

We are prepared like we used to be at every other rally, our men are on ground and we have lectured them on what to do. Security is not one mans business, so, we are ready for anyone that wants to disrupt the rally, Nwosu said.

He added that when people conduct themselves well, they also help the security situation.

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola and the APC governorship candidate, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, were seen distributing APC crested T shirts to the crowd.

Buhari promises Igbo youths one million jobs

Former Head of State, Gen.Muhammadu Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has promised to create one million jobs for Igbo youths by revamping huge coal deposits in Enugu State for generation of electricity and export.

Buhari said this at the Enugu West APC zonal rally on Saturday, where he was represented by the spokesman of the party in the South-East, Osita Okechukwu.

Speaking through Okechukwu, the presidential candidate explained that the coal industry would be revamped with the objective of generating electricity to serve the entire South-East.

He assured the people that he would award the contract immediately he comes into office to avoid the mistakes made by the Peoples Democratic Party, which he said squandered over N2bn voted for a coal project between 2012 and 2014.

We are banking on huge coal deposits located at Amasiodo, Inyi and Leje axis of Enugu Coal belt. We are going to award contract for mining and construction of coal-fired power plant, unlike the PDP that since 1999 promised to revamp the coal fields and 16 years after, nothing has been done.

We believe that coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in Enugu State and Enugu Coal is one of the most qualitative coal brands in the world, which means that while some are used to generate electricity, some will be exported, he said.

The former Head of State said his objective was to create one million jobs directly and indirectly from the coal sector, as ancillary projects would follow.

My idea is to emulate the Taichung Coal-Fired Power Plant in Taiwan, the largest coal power station in the world.

Coal supplies 46 per cent electricity in the United States and over 60 per cent electricity in China it is callous to abandon such a golden treasury.
