Treasury Nominee Pulls Name Under Pressure From Progressives

By Chris Jansing

In a victory for progressive Democrats, Treasury Department nominee Antonio Weiss has taken himself out of contention for the third-ranking spot at the agency, NBC News confirms.

Weiss's nomination to be the Under Secretary for Domestic Finance had prompted anger from progressive Democrats like Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who alleged that he was too close to the financial industry.

"Over the weekend, Mr. Weiss asked the White House not to re-nominate him to serve as Under Secretary for Domestic Finance at the Treasury Department," the White House said in a statement. "Mr. Weiss made the request to avoid the distraction of the lengthy confirmation process that his renomination would likely entail. "

Weiss has instead accepted a position as counselor to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, a position that does not require confirmation by the Senate.

"I am disappointed that Antonio will not have the opportunity to serve as Under Secretary, but I understand his request not to be re-nominated," Lew said in a statement. "I continue to believe that the opposition to his nomination was not justified. Nonetheless, I am confident that he will prove himself to be a dedicated, talented, and effective public servant and that he will make an important contribution to the work we are doing to create broadly shared economic opportunity and financial stability that will be a foundation for long-term prosperity."

APC, APGA offices attacked in Ebonyi

Offices of the All Progressives Congress and the All Progressives Grand Alliance have come under attack in parts of Ebonyi State.

Our correspondent learnt on Monday that a failed attempt was made to bomb the APC office in Abakaliki on Sunday night, with objects suspected to be improvised explosive devices.

However, the APGA office in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state was destroyed, along with houses of some members of the party.

Eye witnesses alleged that those who attacked the APGA office as well as the houses of members of the party wore police uniforms.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the Ebonyi State command, Mr. Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the failed attempt on the APC office and said that the police had launched investigations into the attacks, promising that the culprits would soon be apprehended.

Senior police officers, including the area commander, and the divisional police officer in charge of Kpirikpiri Road police station, were at the scene of the attempted bombing on Monday.

The police bomb disposal unit was also at the party office.

Our correspondent learnt that the APC office, located along Kipirikpiri Road and near the Government House and the headquarters of the police command, also served as the campaign office of Julius Ucha, the governorship candidate of the party in the state.

One of Uchas aides, John Ekeh, said that the unknown assailants threw IEDs into the building at about10: 45 pm on Sunday.

It was a clear intention of those that did it to burn down the office but God was on our side because when they threw the objects from the fence, the wire at the fence may have held the can containing the fuel and the intention was that when the object exploded, the fuel will catch fire and the entire building would have been razed down, Ekeh explained.
