Dont arm-twist Jega to use TVC , APC tells Senate

The South-South zone of the All Progressives Congress has cautioned the Senate not to arm-twist the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to use the Temporary Voter Cards in the rescheduled general elections.

The National Vice-Chairman of APC (South-South), Mr. Hilliard Eta, said the summon of Jega by the upper chambers of the National Assembly to explain the use of the card reader machine was an attempt to arm twist the commission to resort to the old order of the TVC.

He also alleged that it was a plot by the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government to impose the use of TVC for the rescheduled polls.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his special adviser on media, Mr. Bassey Ita, the APC deputy national chairman described the move to introduce the use of TVC as an attempt to drag Nigeria back to the stone age where development was time-consuming and difficult because of the use of analogue devices.

He said the resolve of the PDP-led Senate to kick against the card reader using section 52 of the Electoral Act was another ploy to discredit the INEC and force it to go back to the use of the TVC, adding that should that be the case the ruling party would have dragged Nigeria centuries back.

The statement read in part, I was scandalized that the PDP-led senate would cite section 52 to justify their agitation against the use of the Permanent Voters Cards for an election they had initially conceded to participating in.

I was scandalized that even those who are masters of reason and logic could be bereft of logic and reason in defending Nigerias descend to analogue and backwardness.

This agrees with the saying that a man who is bereft of logic takes to violence. The latest antics is another violent approach to the elections that the PDP has decided to take after foisting the postponement agenda on the nation. The world is watching.

Meanwhile, Eta has condemned the violent explosion and disruption of the APC rally in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday by agents suspected to have been masterminded by the PDP.

The PDP has been divinely marked as agents of destruction; out to destabilise the progress of Nigeria. They would fail in their bid to destroy a country that God has ordained with the potential for being the mother of all black entities in the world, he said.

Ortom urges Benue CP to convene stakeholders summit

The All Progressives Congress, governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has appealed to the Benue Commissioner of Police, Mr Hyacinth Dagala, to convene a summit for political stakeholders to discuss on how to ensure peace in the state.

He made the appeal in Makurdi on Tuesday after lodging a formal complaint about the series of attacks on his supporters and his campaign offices across the state.

Ortom explained that since the beginning of the year, he had written to the state command to complain about the attacks but lamented that nothing had been done, adding that the most disturbing aspect was the report that the police allegedly provided cover for some of the attacks.

The former Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, said he would make efforts to discuss the development with his counterpart and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, urging the commissioner to convene a roundtable on the issue.

He disclosed that as a Christian, he believed that a man could receive nothing except it was given to him from above, saying there was no need to resort to self help.

Ortom commended the police commissioner for personally visiting his campaign headquarters to assess the level of damage and the other efforts to maintain law and order in the state.

The former minister reiterated his commitment to peace in the state, adding that he would do all in his power to ensure that the situation did not escalate.

Dagala assured Ortom that the police would make concerted efforts to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the arson.

He pledged to consult with the states Resident Electoral Commissioner and convene the roundtable as soon as possible while investigations would be conducted into the allegations of Police providing cover for the attackers.

Ortom proceeded to Gyado Villa, where he inspected two offices in which his supporters were attacked and called for restraint, stressing that vengeance belonged to God.

Buhari promises to free towns captured by BHaram

THE All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday promised to liberate captured towns in the North-East from the hold of Boko Haram insurgents.

Security operatives had hectic time controlling the unprecedented crowd that turned out to welcome Buhari to the state, which serves as the base of Boko Haram.

The state governor, Kashim Shettima, had on Sunday declared Monday a work-free day in the state and asked residents to troop out to show their love for Buhari.

Movements were paralysed, especially around the Ramat Square venue of the APC presidential rally.

At the Shehu of Bornos palace, Buhari said, I was here in 1975 as governor of the defunct North-East states, Im happy that I received a befitting welcome; if elected, I will focus on tackling the persistent insecurity affecting the North-East, it is not easy as the damage has been done.

Your Royal Highness, God willing if APC government is elected, all towns under Boko Haram control will be liberated and rebuilt. It was unfortunate that commercial activities were paralysed following the insecurity. In the past, hundreds of trailers loaded with goods took off from Maiduguri to various neighbouring countries, but presently the reverse is the situation.

Boko Haram ideology contradicts Islamic principles, because Islam does not allow senseless killings of innocent souls. It is unfortunate that innocent persons were being killed in mosques, churches and their houses. God willing, if APC government is elected we will restore the confidence in governance.

The Borno monarch, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, told the APC presidential candidate that, if elected, he should focus on restoration of peace, massive investment, re-construction of federal roads and ensure the success of oil exploration in the Lake Chad region.

The speeches at the rally were continually punctuated by the shouts of Sai Buhari.
