Maku emerges APGAs gov candidate in Nasarawa

The All Progressives Grand Alliance in Nasarawa State on Saturday presented the immediate past Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, as its governorship candidate of the party in the 2015 election.

Maku was presented along with his running mate, Alhaji Ibrahim Abu, amidst tight security.

Presenting the former minister to state and local government party executives at a meeting held at Manyi Royal Suites in Lafia, the state capital, the Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Ifeanyi Amakor, said the party considered the choice of Maku in the best interest of the party and of the people of the state.

Amakor reasoned that Maku was the candidate that possessed the required leadership capacity and pedigree to win the governorship election on the platform of the APGA in the state.

He said, I want to use this opportunity to unveil Maku as APGAs candidate for the governorship (election) in Nasarawa State and to clear every rumour that Maku is not our candidate. Let me tell you, we dont have two candidates in the state; the only candidate we have is Maku.

Responding after he was presented to local government party executive committee, Maku pledged that if given the mandate, he would create massive youth empowerment and job opportunities in order to enhance the economy and bring about peaceful co-existence in the state.

He added that he would provide just, fair, qualitative and resultoriented leadership that would bring about change and infrastructural development in the state when voted to power.

2015: Other options aside from Jonathan, Buhari

Other options

Apart from President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Party, little has been said about other candidates for the 2015 presidential election, writes Gbenro Adeoye

With less than two months to the 2015 presidential election in Nigeria, public discussions hardly veer too far from politics, and particularly the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan, and that of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

It is indeed an interesting time in the countrys history and social media enthusiasts can attest to the silent war going on between supporters of the two parties or candidates, who have been using the platform to argue, insult and curse, all in a bid to outdo their perceived political opponents.

The trend continues as if the public is unaware of the other nine presidential candidates as it has been fixated on the candidates of the PDP and the APC.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission recently released the names of all the presidential candidates and their running mates as submitted by 11 of the 26 registered parties in the country, the release of the list has failed to shift discussions from Jonathan and Buhari.

In fact, some members of the public played down the chances of the other nine candidates in the presidential contest.

Going by the information provided by INEC, the parties with the candidates to vie for the positions of president and vice-president on February 14, 2015 are: PDP, Jonathan and his vice, Namadi Sambo; APC, Buhari and his running mate, Yemi Osinbajo; KOWA Party, Prof. Oluremi Sonaiya and Saidu Bobboi; Hope Democratic Party, Ambrose Albert and Haruna Shaba; and Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Ganiyu Galadima and Balarabe Ahmed.

Others are Alliance for Democracy, Rafiu Salau and Clinton Cliff Akuchie; United Democratic Party, Godson Okoye and Haruna Adamu; African Democratic Congress, Nani Ibrahim Ahmad and Obianuju Murphy-Uzohue; National Conscience Party, Martin Onovo and Ibrahim Mohammed; Action Alliance, Tunde Anifowoshe-Kelani and Paul Ishaka Ofomile; and United Progressive Party, Chekwas Okorie and Bello Umar.

Labour Party and the All Progressives Grand Alliance will not be fielding candidates as both parties have adopted Jonathan as their presidential candidate.

Jonathan cant fight corruption if given 60 years APC

National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress says President Goodluck Jonathan cannot fight corruption even if he is given 60 years to rule Nigeria.

The APC said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, while reacting to a promise by Jonathan that he would institute anti-corruption programmes if re-elected next month.

The APC said Jonathans inability to tackle corruption was not surprising as a corrupt government can never fight corruption.

It said it was surprising that Jonathan was still initiating a plan to tackle corruption despite the presence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

The statement read, Mr. President said he wants to put in place the institutions to tackle corruption before taking on the cankerworm that has almost destroyed the fabric of our society. Pray, whatever happened to the EFCC and the ICPC? Were they not institutions specifically created for the purpose of tackling corruption, but which the Jonathan administration chose to castrate?

There is no better way to say this: President Jonathan lacks the political will to tackle corruption, and he will not tackle it if he spends 60 years in office.

The party said it was unfortunate that despite spending about five years in office, the Jonathan administration was just beginning to diagnose the problems of Nigeria.

It said, A President who has spent the last six years trying to diagnose the main problems facing the country will apparently need another four years to plan how to tackle the challenges. By then, all of us would have been buried under the rubble of corruption and our country would have been decimated by insecurity.

It is therefore time for Nigerians to vote in a President who will hit the ground running, a President who will tackle the problems of corruption and insecurity headlong, without giving excuses for failure.
