MEND carpets PDP, IYC, restates support for Buhari

January 8, 2015 by Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt 28 Comments

Despite the criticisms trailing its endorsement of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for the February 2015 election, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has insisted that it will support the APC flag bearer.

MEND had on Wednesday declared that it would support Buhari for presidential poll, alleging that President Goodluck Jonathan had not lived up to the expectation of Nigerians, a position that did not go down well with the Peoples Democratic Party and the Ijaw Youth Council.

The PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, queried APCs link with MEND, the IYC, through its Publicity Secretary, Eric Omare, reportedly described MEND as a ghost.

But MEND, in a statement by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, on Thursday via e-mail, described Metuhs position on its (MEND) support for Buhari as callous and irresponsible.

The Niger Delta militant group explained that the reaction of the PDP further confirmed its (MEND) views about Jonathans inept government.

MENDs statement read, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta views the recent question and statement credited to the Peoples Democratic Partys National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, as very callous and irresponsible.

The question: Explain your connections with MEND, further confirms and vindicates our views about Goodluck Jonathan, his inept government and the PDP.

MEND, however, pointed out that its endorsement of Buhari did not mean that it had any link with the APC, adding that contrary to Metuhs view, it (MEND) had never been approached by the party.

It described Buhari as the man that would lead Nigeria out of its state of calamity in the hand of the current leadership.

REACTING to the criticism of its endorsement of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for the presidency in the 2015 elections, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has insisted that Buhari is the best candidate in the race.

MEND, the umbrella body for militancy in the oil-rich Niger-Delta, said it would support the APC candidate.

Candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan, an Ijaw man from Bayelsa State, is also from the Niger Delta.

MEND had on Wednesday declared that it would support Buhari for the presidency, alleging that Jonathan had not performed up to the expectations of Nigerians, a position that did not go down well with the PDP and the Ijaw Youth Council.

Why the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, queried APCs link with MEND, the IYC through its Publicity Secretary, Eric Omare, reportedly described MEND as a ghost.

Jonathan, at the commencement of his campaign in Lagos on Thursday, also said he did not expect the groups support because some people procured MEND in 2010 to assassinate me and that the leader of the group, Henry Okah, is in jail in South Africa.

But MEND, in an electronic statement by its famous spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, on Thursday, described Metuhs position on its support for Buhari as callous and irresponsible.

The reaction of the PDP, the Niger Delta militant group explained, further confirmed its views about President Jonathans alleged inept government.

The statement read, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta views the recent question and statement credited to the Peoples Democratic Party National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, as very callous and irresponsible.

Jonathan, a divisive leader APC

Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to stop bemoaning the widening ethno-religious gap among Nigerians, saying the President was Nigerias most divisive leader.

The opposition party said that the citizens were today more divided along religions and ethnic lines than ever before.

The party said this in reaction to comments by Jonathan, at a meeting with members of the Northern Elders Council in Abuja, that some of our elder statesmen had been making inciting and divisive statements capable of polarising Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines.

The APCs reaction was contained in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja on Thursday.

Part of the statement read, Mr. President, there is no point being sanctimonious about an issue for which you bear the most responsibility.

You are the most divisive leader in the history of Nigeria, having ceaselessly exploited the countrys fault lines for political gains.

Where was President Jonathan when his spokespersons and party members sought to portray all adherents of a particular faith as terrorists?

The APC said Jonathan was the countrys first leader to turn the house of worship to a political arena, using the pulpit to make political and policy statements and making a show of what should ordinarily be a very personal religious affair.

It added that the Presidents belated lamentation is aimed at pulling the wool over the eyes of Nigerians with a view to extracting undeserved political gains, especially a few weeks before next months elections.
