APC attacks Fayose

Ayo Fayose

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has described the dismissal of the 180 employees of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and permanent secretaries as part of the executive rascality of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The party said it was an evidence of the definition of stomach infrastructure espoused by the governors deceptive administration to dehumanise and celebrate poverty in Ekiti State.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said with the dismissal of the employees by the leader of the seven Peoples Democratic Partys lawmakers, Dele Olugbemi, it was becoming clearer that Fayose was not a friend of the workers.

Olatubosun maintained that the affected workers were duly employed by the House of Assembly Service Commission, with statutory approval since April, 2014 with their conditions of service clearly stated. He wondered why such workers could be summarily sacked through an announcement immediately after the New Year interdenominational service without following the civil service rules.

He added that Olugbemi did not have such power to sack employees of the commission, even if he were to be the authentic Speaker of the House of Assembly.

He said, This is a legislative rascality which is a corollary of executive rascality and recklessness by the Fayose administration.

How can someone with genuine love of his people behave in a manner suggestive that he is an enemy of the people he professes to love?

But in its reaction, the PDP asked the APCs leadership to cover their faces in shame for defending irregular employment made by their government.

The state Secretary of the PDP, Dr. Tope Aluko, in a statement on Thursday, said the affected employees were without appointment letters.

Mario Cuomo funeral brings progressives together

New York Former Gov.MarioCuomo'slegacy as a liberal champion and powerful orator was remembered at his funeral Tuesday by one who knew him best Gov. AndrewCuomo, his son.

"At his core, he was a philosopher. He was a poet. He was an advocate. He was a crusader.MarioCuomowas the keynote speaker for our better angels," the youngerCuomosaid in a eulogy that spanned his father's background as the son of immigrants, his biggest speeches and his basketball prowess.

The former three-term governor who flirted with but never made a presidential run and turned down an opportunity to be nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court died Thursday, hours after his son was inaugurated for a second term.

Dignitaries including Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mayor Bill de Blasio gathered to mourn the 82-year-old Democratic Party icon and to honor his legacy.

Dozens of police officers stood at attention in front of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, and a pipe and drum corps played solemnly asCuomo'scasket was carried inside. Pallbearers includedCuomo'syounger son, CNN newscaster ChrisCuomo.

On Monday, hundreds waited in a line that stretched more than a block atCuomo'swake. Vice President Joe Biden, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and actor Alan Alda were among those who paid tribute.

As governor from 1983 to 1994,Cuomowas recognized for his eloquence and for powerful appeals for social justice that blended liberal ideals with his life experience as the son of an Italian immigrant grocer.

He was known for his deliberations over running for president, which earned him the nickname "Hamlet on the Hudson." He came close to running in 1988 and 1992 but decided against it.

Why? "Because he didn't want to" and loved being governor, AndrewCuomosaid in a heartfelt speech that mixed political legacy, personal memories of his "Pops" and calls to move the state forward in his father's footsteps.

Cuomowas most remembered for a speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, where he focused on an America divided between haves and have-nots and scolded Republican President Ronald Reagan for not working to close that gap.

APC accuses PDP of engaging in pre-election violence

The All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of engaging in violence ahead of next months general elections, alleging that many supporters of the APC were shot by gunmen on their way to the inaugural campaign of the partys presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday.

In a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it was not surprised by published reports that the attack was led by an ex-militant, who is a member of the PDP from the Gokana Local Government.

It believed that the PDP had resorted to violence because it had realised that it is fast losing ground in Rivers State.

The party added that the attacks, reportedly by thugs allegedly working for the PDP along the Bori-Saakpenwa Road in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, followed the same pattern of previous acts of violence directed at the APC, the partys elected and appointed officials, including Governor Rotimi Amaechi, as well as its supporters by PDP thugs in the state.

APC said the acts of violence perpetrated against its supporters, some of whom it claimed were lying critical ill in hospital, on Tuesday occurred despite assurances by President Goodluck Jonathan as well as PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu, that next months general elections would be free, fair and peaceful.

The party said PDP officials had apparently been deceiving Nigerians that they intend to run an issue-based campaign, when their partys stock in trade is bare-faced violence and gangsterism.

APC added, The assurances by the leadership of the PDP ring hollow when thugs affiliated with the party are ambushing peaceful and harmless supporters heading to a campaign rally. It is either the leadership is not sincere in its assurances or it has lost control of the party, which will both be dangerous for the country.

If the PDP has launched a campaign of violence against the APC this early, only God knows how far the ruling party will go to physically decimate the opposition before, during and after Februarys elections. We are therefore calling on all Nigerians and indeed the international community to closely monitor the events during the ongoing electioneering and the elections themselves.

On our part, we will document every act of violence against our members and supporters, just so that we can show the world, with verifiable proof, which party is indeed the violent one.
