APC accuses PDP of engaging in pre-election violence

The All Progressives Congress has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of engaging in violence ahead of next months general elections, alleging that many supporters of the APC were shot by gunmen on their way to the inaugural campaign of the partys presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday.

In a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it was not surprised by published reports that the attack was led by an ex-militant, who is a member of the PDP from the Gokana Local Government.

It believed that the PDP had resorted to violence because it had realised that it is fast losing ground in Rivers State.

The party added that the attacks, reportedly by thugs allegedly working for the PDP along the Bori-Saakpenwa Road in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, followed the same pattern of previous acts of violence directed at the APC, the partys elected and appointed officials, including Governor Rotimi Amaechi, as well as its supporters by PDP thugs in the state.

APC said the acts of violence perpetrated against its supporters, some of whom it claimed were lying critical ill in hospital, on Tuesday occurred despite assurances by President Goodluck Jonathan as well as PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu, that next months general elections would be free, fair and peaceful.

The party said PDP officials had apparently been deceiving Nigerians that they intend to run an issue-based campaign, when their partys stock in trade is bare-faced violence and gangsterism.

APC added, The assurances by the leadership of the PDP ring hollow when thugs affiliated with the party are ambushing peaceful and harmless supporters heading to a campaign rally. It is either the leadership is not sincere in its assurances or it has lost control of the party, which will both be dangerous for the country.

If the PDP has launched a campaign of violence against the APC this early, only God knows how far the ruling party will go to physically decimate the opposition before, during and after Februarys elections. We are therefore calling on all Nigerians and indeed the international community to closely monitor the events during the ongoing electioneering and the elections themselves.

On our part, we will document every act of violence against our members and supporters, just so that we can show the world, with verifiable proof, which party is indeed the violent one.

Im not expecting funds from Arabians -Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, has dismissed reports that he was expecting funds from unnamed Arab countries to fund his presidential campaign.

This is even as a coalition of support groups, under the aegis of the Buhari Support Organisation on Wednesday, announced that the Buhari Crowd Funding Initiative has so far yielded a total of N118, 702, 265. 36.

Buhari spoke through the convener of a meeting of the coalition of his support groups, Col. Hamid Ali (retd), in an interview with reporters in Abuja.

Ali who is also Buharis Chief of Staff, said claims that the former Head of State was expecting funding from the Arab league were not only untrue, but also malicious.

He said, It is not true. I am part of it, I am in the centre of it and I dont know of any Arab man that has spoken to us, so it is untrue, it is false.

Buhari has said it that he lunched the (crowd) funding to get money purposely from the lower people because he want the commitment of the people and to remember when he get to the office that it is the sweat of the people that got him there and by that he will be more committed to serve them.

Ali however confirmed that the Buhari campaign team was receiving donations from groups and individuals who have identified with the cause of rescuing Nigeria.

He explained that apart from the sale of specialised scratch cards, there were donations made directly to the designated bank account.

Earlier in his address during a meeting of support groups, Ali explained that the sum of N54 million was realized as of December 24, 2014 while an additional N64, 702,265.36 accrued to the fund as of Wednesday.

He further explained that the idea behind the meeting of support groups was to provide an avenue to examine the challenges being encountered by the support groups in order to harmonise positions ahead of next months presidential poll.

Paul Fanlund: Progressives must become much better marketers

As Madisons progressives ponder the grim political terrain here and in Washington, Id suggest they think about it under three headings substance, language and tactics.

On substance, as you might expect, I believe progressives win, as they are interested in all of us, not just the large subset dominated by those who view themselves as somehow more patriotic and religiously correct my alternative to the silly politically correct than the rest of us.

But on language and tactics, progressives have been losing for a long time.

Think about it: In Wisconsin, how weary are you of hearing some Republican talk about a common sense solution or address an audience filled with hard-working people who deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money?

Look, there are self-made people on both sides of the left-right spectrum, people who have worked hard, taken risks, bettered themselves, and served others. So why are those references in politics almost always made by conservatives? Perhaps because progressives consider such language as code aimed against the least well off, or as trite, silly and opportunistic.

The problem, though, is that it seems to work.

Or consider the word reform. Stick that word on the end of anything and its sounds like it must be positive, right? To my mind, the GOP definition of reform is when Republicans take something from a group of people that is not part of their core constituency. Labeling these takeaways as reforms has been one of Gov. Scott Walkers greatest coups.

In Washington, why in the world do Democrats allow GOP pejorative descriptors to stick? Two of my least favorites are the death tax, which, one must admit, sounds creepy, and Obamacare.

Ordinary Americans would never be affected by estate taxes because of high wealth thresholds, but along the way, wealthy GOP interests rebranded it as the death tax. That term was coined in the 1940s but gained traction in the 1990s and dominates today.

And of course Republicans could refer to the health insurance reform as the Affordable Care Act, but instead succeeded in naming it Obamacare, which makes it sound like something flimsy, fly-by-night and peddled on cable television.

APC commiserates with Jonathan over sisters death

January 5, 2015 by Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt 11 Comments

THE All Progressives Congress has condoled with President Goodluck Jonathan over the death of his 52-year-old sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan-Olei.

Mrs. Jonathan-Olei had died in a hospital in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during a brief illness.

The APC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, urged President Jonathan to take solace in God for the unquantifiable loss.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commiserated with President Goodluck Jonathan on the untimely death of his sister, urging him to take solace in God for the unquantifiable loss, the statement read.

Describing the death of a loved one as an unfathomable tragedy, the APC pointed out that the pains of losing a relative would be compounded when the deceased died at an unripe age.

The loss of a loved one is always an unfathomable tragedy, which is compounded when such death occurs at an unripe age. We pray that God will grant repose to the soul of the departed, comfort the President and his entire family and give them the strength to bear their loss.

We also wish the immediate family of the deceased Gods succour in their moment of darkness, the National APC statement, which was issued in Port Harcourt on Monday, read.
