APC pledges to work for 2015 violence-free polls

The All Progressives Congress has assured Nigerians and theinternational community that it will do all in its power to make surethat the 2015 general election is violence-free, saying the rising apprehension about the polls among the populace is inimical to the conduct of a successful election.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National PublicitySecretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party, however, said its efforts should be complemented by the PDP-led federal government, which has apropensity for using the security agencies to harass and intimidate the opposition and ordinary citizens.

It also said the FG should take all measures necessary to ensure thatthe elections are free, fair and credible, since rigging and other acts of electoral malpractices constitute the immediate trigger foranger and violence during and after elections.

We have heard from Nigerians who are so afraid about possibleviolence during the forthcoming election that they are even willing torelocate to other countries until after the elections. But, as the biggest opposition party in Nigeria and a major stakeholder in ournations democracy, we are assuring, on our part, that there will beno violence.

Though our party has no history of violence, we have commenced anationwide effort to sensitize our members and supporters to the needto eschew rancour and embrace non-violent methods, even in the face ofthe kind of provocations to which we were subjected during the Ekitiand Osun governorship elections, when our members were needlesslyharassed, arrested and detained by partisan security agencies acting under orders from the FG.

If the federal government allows a level playing field for allcontestants, if the security agencies stop acting as the armed wing ofthe ruling PDP, if the electoral umpire will carry out its duties without fear, favour or bias and if citizens are allowed to exercisetheir franchise unmolested, the stage will be set for a non-violent,free, fair and credible polls. In other words, the government has amajor role to play in making the forthcoming polls peaceful.

On our part, in addition to other efforts aimed at ensuring a peacefulelection, we pledge to accept the result of an election that is notonly free, fair, credible and transparent, but one that is also seen to be so. We hopeother partieswill make a similar pledge, APC said.

Show your anti-corruption feats, Buhari dares Jonathan

Former Head of State, Gen.Muhammadu Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), have declared war on corruption.

They, therefore, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to showcase his achievements on the war against corruption in the face of allegations of a missing $20bn.

Buhari said this in a statement by the Director, Communications Buhari Campaign Organisations, Mr. Dele Alake, on Sunday.

He said, In the spirit of the war against corruption, we demand the release of the audit report of the missing $20bn.

Clearly unable to oppose us with an equally clean and unassailable ticket, we can understand why our opponents are running from pillar to post digging graves in search of rumours in the impossible hope of misinforming unsuspecting voters and spinning a web of blackmail and deceit.

In this electoral contest of vision and moral stature, only the guilty needs to be afraid. Luckily, our lives are like the open book. We challenge our opponents to stake their desire to lead Nigeria again on what they have achieved with the billions of resources they received.

Buhari said if voted into office, he would implement programme which would entail a zero-tolerance for corruption.

He said his life was an open book as he had nothing to hide.

The APC presidential candidate boasted that he and his running mate lived exemplary lives and had become reference points for how to live a morally upright life.

Nigeria: Osinbajo – Best Choice As Buhari's Running Mate – Ezea

By Emmanuel Nzomiwu / Correspondent

Enugu All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Okechukwu Ezea, has described Professor Yemi Osinbajo as the best choice for a running mate to General Muhamadu Buhari (rtd) in the February 2015 presidential election.

In a statement in Enugu on Wednesday, Ezea expressed confidence that the combination of Buhari and Osinbajo as the presidential and vice presidential candidates of APC, would give the party the desired victory in next year's presidential election.

The Enugu APC governorship hopeful described the partnership between the former distinguished Army General and the Law Professor as a fusion of integrity and competence.

According to him, Buhari and Osinbajo, leading an APC national government from May 29, 2015, would reposition Nigeria and put it on the path of greatness again.

"I have known Professor Osinbajo for a long time. He was my lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Akoka where I obtained my LLB and Masters in Law."

"He is an intellectual of proven integrity, competence and character. He is a God-fearing man. He is honest, incorruptible, principled and morally upright. I want to commend General Buhari and our leaders in APC for choosing Professor Osinbajo as our Vice Presidential candidate," Ezea stated.

He enjoined all Nigerians, especially the people of Enugu State to vote for APC to bring about the desired positive change in Nigeria and end almost two decades of misrule by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which culminated in the reign of insecurity and poverty across the country.

Ezea said the people of Enugu State must embrace the wind of change blowing across the country now as PDP government has failed them in the past 16 years.

The lonely progressives

The lonely progressives Posted By Max Brantley on Sat, Dec 27, 2014 at 7:08 AM An op-ed from the New York Times has some resonance in today's Arkansas. It's by a Nebraska "progressive" and her participation in groups that soldier on in a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1936 and has an all-Republican congressional and state legislative membership. None of the Republicans acknowledges atmospheric change.

Occasionally, there's common purpose. Republicans have joined the fight in Nebraska against the Keystone XL pipeline.

Mostly, though, the old-timers of the small progressive community are the "royalty of lost causes." They lose, but they keep working. This year, though, was hard.

The evening after this dismal election, we met for our usual potluck. At first, a few of us tried to point out slivers of silver linings, but then one of our members said flatly, We are doomed. What followed was a sad discussion of our broken political system, big money in politics, Fox News and four more years of inaction on environmental issues. This was the first meeting in my memory in which I felt worse at the end instead of better.

The writer ends on an upbeat note with some small environmental victories and a couple of promising candidates. They'll soldier on. Surrender isn't an option.
