D-Day beckons for APC presidential aspirants

In this piece, JOHN ALECHENU x-rays the upcoming presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress and posits that as the race for the party ticket approaches a climax, the partys fortunes are tied to its outcome

Barring any last minute changes, in exactly one week from today, Wednesday December 10, 2014 to be precise, the opposition All Progressives Congress will unveil its presidential candidate.

This, fact, is not lost to some of the contenders in the race for the ticket.

For more than a decade, members of the opposition tried but failed to come together to form a formidable challenge to the political behemoth which the ruling Peoples Democratic Party has come to represent.

For the first time in recent political memory, this jinx was broken with the formation of the APC from the ashes of what used to be the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigerian Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change, not forgetting a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

The personal ambitions of individual party leaders were suspended as opposition leaders appeared determined to build a platform to wrest power from the ruling party.

Keen observers of the new party were aware of the fact that some of these leaders joined the merger based on certain assurances.

The most outstanding of these leaders are Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

In fact, Buhari, a serial presidential candidate under the defunct ANPP and later the CPC, was said to have been convinced to join in the formation of the APC based on an understanding that he will be handed the ticket.

For a while, most of his supporters especially those within the party, were under the impression that the partys ticket was his for the taking.

Ondo APC holds peaceful primaries

The All Progressives Congress House of Assembly primaries held in the 26 constituencies in Ondo State in peaceful atmosphere.

Security operatives patrolled the different places where delegates chose their candidates to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order.

Accreditation started as early as 8am in most of the constituencies, while winners were announced as soon as the delegates completed voting.

It was however gathered there were some disagreements in some constituencies regarding the list of delegates presented.

Chairman of the party in the state, Isaac Kekemeke said although there were contentions in two constituencies, the primaries were largely peaceful.

He said, You cannot rule out some disagreements when you are holding primaries in 26 constituencies.

But if the disagreement is just recorded in one or two constituencies, then that is about 90 per cent success.

He added that winners were announced at the venues and certificates of return issued to them at the same time.

APC begins screening of five presidential aspirants

National Chairman, All Progressives Congress, John Odigie Oyegun

The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday commenced the screening of its five presidential aspirants.

Those to be screened are the Publisher of The Leadership newspaper, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah; Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Nda-Isaiah was the first to appear before the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu-led eight member committee at the partys national headquarters in Abuja.

Addressing reporters before the commencement of the exercise, Onu said the committee would not spare any effort in ensuring that only aspirants considered fit and proper would be presented during the forthcoming convention.

He said that each of the aspirants would be required to sign an undertaking to abide by the partys guidelines and to support the eventual winner of the ticket.

Onu said, In screening our aspirants, we will take into consideration the constitution of our party, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Electoral Act 2010. We would be doing something that is novel in our country because we want to really effect change.

We will attach a lot of importance to the manifesto of the party; we will like to know how ready our aspirants are to attend to the urgent needs of the nation in the areas of security, the economy, job creation, foreign policy and corruption.
