Presidential bid: Falana flays Buhari over N27.5m loan

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, has criticised the All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for obtaining a loan of N27.5m to procure his partys expression of interest and nomination form for the 2015 presidential election.

He made this remark on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Paramount FM chapel press week.

He noted that the action of the former head of state was indefensible, stressing that it amounted to monetisation of politics.

He said, It is indefensible for Gen. Buhari to have obtained a loan facility of N27.5m just to obtain a form of intent to contest in the presidential election in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress.

Is he going to obtain another loan during his campaign? Because in Nigeria, it costs billions of naira to run a presidential campaign.

Falana, who was the guest lecturer at the event, spoke on the topic: Current Security Challenges: Implication for 2015 Elections.

PDP govs to APC: FG not secretly funding us

Plateau State Governor, Mr. Jonah Jang | credits: File copy

Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State and Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State on Thursday faulted the claim credited to the Progressives Governors Forum that the Federal Government was starving the All Progressives Congress governments of fund.

They spoke in separate interviews with State House correspondents after attending a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Rising from their meeting in Ilorin on Wednesday, the governors were reported to have said that the Federal Government was funding the Peoples Democratic Party states to the detriment of the APC states.

But Jang and Aliyu said making such a statement was tantamount to mere playing of politics.

Jang, who is also a factional chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, said all states of the federation were experiencing the negative effects of dwindling federal allocation.

He said it would be wrong to accuse the Federal Government of funding only the PDP states.

That is mere playing of politics. It is not true that the Federal Government is funding only the PDP states. It is not true, he said.

The governor added that the lesson in the development to all state governments was to stop excessive reliance on the monthly federal allocation.

Aliyu also confirmed that there was no truth in the APC governors claim.

APC govs back consensus presidential candidate

The Progressives Governors Forum on Wednesday declared its support for consensus method of choosing the presidential as well as other candidates for the All Progressives Congress.

The Chairman, Progressive Governors Forum, Chief Rochas Okorocha, while addressing journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on the decisions reached by the Forum, said neither the party nor the forum had adopted any candidate.

He said the forum, which comprised APC governors, was in support of consensus method of choosing candidates so long as there was no imposition of candidates.

He added that in the event of not arriving at a consensus candidate, the party would then go for credible and transparent primaries.

Okorocha said, On consensus, our forum is in full support of consensus as one of the ways to produce our presidential candidate or any candidate in the party for as long as it is done with regards for internal democracy. There will be no imposition of candidate in our party.

Our Forum has not adopted any candidate neither has the Governors Forum adopted any candidate but we shall encourage consensus and dialogue within the leadership of the party and aspirants to see how we come up with a candidate. But where that is not possible, like true progressives, we shall have a free and fair primaries from the APC.

He also decried the dwindling revenue coming to the states, adding that it had become so terrible that some states were finding it difficult to pay their workers salaries.

Okorocha said the forum planned to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan on the issue and pleaded with the President to grant the meeting.
