The Growing Influence of Godly Progressives?

As the demographics of religion change in the United States, faith may have a different degree of influence than it once did.

Is religion the most important thing in your life? This is one of the questions people had to answer in a 2013 Public Religion Research Institute/Brookings surveyas researchers tried to figure out how much faith influences people's viewson culture and the economy. They got pretty striking results: More than half of people who they considered to be "religious conservatives" said yes, while only about 10 percent of people classified as "religious progressives" said the same. This means that on a whole host of issues, ranging from abortion and gay marriage to welfare and the minimum wage, faith probably has more of an influence on how conservatives think than it does for liberals.

It's tough to get inside people's heads and understand how their beliefs about God affect their views on culture, but a new report from Brookings hints at why researchers might want to: In terms of numbers, religious progressives are gaining on religious conservatives. According to the researchers, "religious progressives" are people of faith who have typically "liberal" opinions on a range of issues: They want more government support for the poor, rather than less; more freedom to have pre-marital sex and drink, rather than less, etc. From this break-down of age and race, you can see that religious progressives dominate America's growing populations:

Blacks, hispanics, and people of mixed race are all more likely to be religious progressives than conservatives; these groups are also among the fastest-growing demographics in the United States. Similarly, Millennials are more than twice as likely to be religious progressives than religious conservatives; in fact, people older than 50 make up more than 60 percent of those who are considered to be religious conservatives. Although it's impossible to talk to an 18-year-old about her views on culture and predict what she'll think in two decades, these demographic trends suggest that the religious right is about to start shrinking.

But the question of influence is a little fuzzier. Although more than a third of Millennials are considered religious progressives, roughly 40 percent don't have any faith at all: A growing number of young people don't identify with a particular religion. That, alongwith the fact that an overwhelming majority of religious progressives don't see religion as "the most important thing in their life," suggests that faith is losing its overall influence over how people think about social and cultural issues.

As the authors of the Brookings study wrote, "Religious progressivism, precisely because of its diversity, will never constitute the same cohesive and relatively homogenous force that religious conservatism represents." In terms of individual hearts and minds, it's hard to tell how much of a role "religion" has in the new wave of "religious progressivism"it's possible to be religious and progressive at the same time, but it's also possible that those progressive beliefs don't have much to do with God.

APC appeals for release of abducted medical doctor

The Kaduna State chapter of All Progressives Congress, on Friday called for the unconditional release of 75-year-old Dr Stephen Kitchener, abducted in Zaria on Tuesday.

A statement by the state Interim Chairman of the party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed described the abducted medical doctor as an icon of service and humility.

It said, Dr Kitchener has dedicated his life to the service of his community, and it is almost certain that his kidnappers are mistaken in believing that he has the type of wealth needed to buy his freedom.

We join many others in praying for his safe release, and appeal to his kidnappers to free him without delay.

The statement particularly urged Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Gov. Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State to support efforts to trace and free this elderly man who has many health challenges.

Schoolgirls abduction: Shelve further rallies, APC tells Jonathan

The All Progressives Congress has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to cancel the political rally planned for him by the Adamawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party slated for Tuesday.

In a statement signed by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Thursday, the APC said the President cannot and should not be celebrating when over 200 school girls are missing.

The party expressed the hope that the abducted girls will be released unharmed even before Tuesday, April 29 when the rally is expected to hold.

It however said until this happens, it will be insensitive and indecent for anyone, least of all the President who is the father of the nation, to engage in any celebratory outing under any guise.

According to the party, the President must not repeat the faux pas he committed less than 24 hours after 75 of his compatriots were killed in the Nyanya bombing.

He said, All decent men and women were riled that President Jonathan went dancing at an illegal campaign stop in Kano and popping champagne corks at a birthday celebration in Ibadan when the smoke was yet to clear from the scene of the Nyanya bombing.

The President should not repeat the same mistake, if indeed he considered that to be one. He should see the missing girls as his own daughters and stop forthwith his illegal campaign rallies.

The APC said the ongoing bickering over the site of the rally in Adamawa State, close to the scene of the sad abduction of the girls, is distracting from what should be a concerted national effort to find the girls and reunite them safely with their families.

For a President whose groveling aides have likened to Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and other great leaders in a patently blasphemous campaign, he should take time to ask himself how Obama would have reacted to one missing girl from any school in the US, not to talk of over 200 missing girls.

Does President Jonathan honestly believe that Mandela, in his days as President, would have been campaigning when his compatriots are being daily bombed or abducted?

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday warned the Peoples Democratic Party and the other contestants in the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections against rigging, saying election riggers in the two states would be roasted.

The ex-governor of Lagos State said, No government that wants peoples votes will be doing what they are doing. They are already planning to rig the elections but be ready to protect your votes; nobody serves you freedom a la carte. It is going to be rig and roast.

We are prepared not to go to court but to drive you out. We will not take it anymore. If you mess up in Ekiti and Osun states, you will see our reactions. For every action, there must be a reaction.

Tinubu spoke at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, during his investiture as the chancellor of the university and the conferment of doctoral degree in Management Science on him.

The governorship poll in Ekiti is scheduled for June 21 while that of Osun comes up August 9.

The APC chieftain slammed the President Goodluck Jonathans government as married to corruption, saying the war against corruption by the government was a deceit.

He however said the leaders of the opposition party were ready to cooperate with the President and the Federal Government to find solution to the scourge of terrorism in the country.

The opposition leaders promise of cooperation came ahead of Thursdays (today) meeting of the President with the 36 state governors and security chiefs to discuss the escalating insurgence in the country.

The former Lagos State governor said that all Nigerians, irrespective of their political leanings or religious beliefs, must rise up against rising terrorism in the North-East, which he said had resulted in the deaths of many innocent citizens.
