BELGRADE -- B92 learned on Tuesday that the new president of the Assembly of Serbia will be official of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) Maja Gojkovi.

This proposal has been supported by 30 MPs and is already in parliament.

Jana Ljubii, who until now served as parliament's secretary general, told Tanjug that the proposal arrived at the secretariat and will be discussed during the session scheduled for Wednesday.

According to her, it is the only nomination so far, while the candidates for deputy speakers will be discussed later.

The media in Belgrade reported today that the SNS, after giving up on the idea of instituting a "rotating president" of parliament, came up with a shortlist of candidates.

The Serbian parliament will on Wednesday select its speaker, deputy speakers, and working groups, which will complete the constitution of the highest legislative body.

A session held on April 16 confirmed the mandates of new MPs.

On Thursday, they are expected to consider laws on government and ministries and vote on the drafts on Saturday, April 26.

APC faults Wike over alleged Amaechis return to PDP

THE All Progressives Congress has described as ridiculous the claim by the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, that the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and his supporters were planning a return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The APC also dismissed claims by the minister that the party was afraid of the PDP, adding that Wikes statement was made with an intention to boost the morale of his depleting supporters.

Wike had during the celebration of the one year anniversary of the state PDP executive led by Mr. Felix Obuah on Saturday said that Amaechi and his supporters were planning to return to the PDP through the backdoor.

But a statement by the Rivers State Chapter of the APC on Tuesday indicated that Amaechi and his supporters were still APC and had never imagined going back to the PDP.

The statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Interim State Chairman of the APC, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, added that the state governor and his supporters had no reason to return to the PDP that had seized to function in the state.

This, to say the least, is a lie from the pit of hell. It is really unfortunate that a man holding a high office as a Federal Minister could lie so brazenly and without compunction in his desperation to raise the morale of his fast depleting followers in the Rivers PDP.

It is indeed ridiculous for Wike to allege that Governor Amaechi and other APC leaders in the state are planning to rejoin PDP through the backdoor. What he does not understand is that Gov. Amaechi has left PDP for good, without any intention of returning to the sinking ship which PDP has become as of today.

The people of Rivers State are wise enough not to allow such a politician and administrator to govern the State even for one second to avoid him destroying all the enviable legacies of Governor Amaechi, the state APC added.

Describing Rivers as an APC state, the party noted that the minister would not be able to change the situation.

Rivers State is an APC State and a million Wikes cannot change that fact. We are proud of the feats of Governor Amaechi; and we thank God that he has today become a political institution, the statement read.

APC chieftain asks Jonathan to resign

Chief Ayo Akande | credits: http://www.thenationonlineng.net

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to resign from office over his handling of the security and economic challenges facing the country.

Akande, in an Easter message on Monday, said Nigerians were fed up with a president who prefer dining and wining round the states while a part of the country was burning.

It has never been so bad in this country. Christians in the country are celebrating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ amid fear of their safety on the streets from terrorists, who have continued to wax stronger due to the inability of the Jonathan-led government to curb their criminality, he said.

The APC chieftain noted that if it were to be in the developed world the President would have resigned when it was obvious that the government was losing control of the administration of the country.

The power sector has nose-dived; security has collapsed while the economy of the country was nothing to write home about, Akande said.

He congratulated Christians on the celebration of Easter and admonished them to continue to pray for the survival of the country.

He said, It is evident that the country is not at ease but faithful of all religions, especially Christians in this season, should continue to pray for the survival of the country despite the bad governance that has been foisted on the people.

To me, it is ridiculous that President Jonathan and his Peoples Democratic Party are claiming that the Gross Domestic Product of the country is the highest in Africa. It is a statement of fact all over the world that no economy can thrive in a country where the security apparatus has broken down. The security situation of the country is getting worse every day and Nigerians are not at rest.

The missing school pupils in Borno State are yet to be accounted for. In Malaysia, the authorities are still searching for bodies of the people who lost their lives in the missing aircraft whereas in Nigeria the opposite is the case. The President would have preferred dancing round the country or seeking for votes instead of confronting the security challenges facing the country. We do not have to wait until there is a bomb blast in the National Assembly or the venue of the National Conference before we ask him to resign.
