APC may field Christian for Lagos gov

There are strong indications that the All Progressives Congress will present a Christian candidate for the 2015 governorship election in Lagos State.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that a national leader of the APC and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, may be backing a governorship aspirant in the state.

Tinubu was said to have introduced a former Permanent Secretary/Accountant-General of the Lagos State Government, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to the state local government chairmen as his choice aspirant at a meeting in Lagos penultimate week.

The opposition party has been in government in Lagos since the current democratic dispensation began in 1999 and all the governors have been Muslims.

A leader of party, who was privy to events at the meeting, told SUNDAY PUNCH in confidence on Friday that Tinubu allegedly nominated Ambode for the race.

The source said, His name is Akinwunmi Ambode; he was a former Accountant-General. He has been chosen. The whole idea is that if they should put a Christian governor, it should be enough.

It is very bad thing (imposition) and it is going to destroy the APC, if they are not careful.

He further said a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, might be chosen as Ambodes running mate.

The Publicity Secretary, APC, Lagos State, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, however, denied knowledge of the development. He told our correspondent on Friday that the opportunity was still open to all aspirants in the party.

Will: Mozilla CEO's resignation shows progressives for diversity 'in everything but thought'

George Will said Friday on Special Report with Bret Baierthat the resignation of Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich over his financial support of Californias anti-gay marriage law was evidence, redundant evidence, that progressives are for diversity in everything but thought.

Eich was promoted in March to head the company, which is the creator of the web browser Firefox. However his $1,000 donation to the campaign to pass Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage in California, drew outrage from some Mozilla employees. It also led to the departure of three of the companys six board members and sparked a boycott by a popular dating website.

Amid the firestorm, Eich resigned after just two weeks on the job, saying in a statement that under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader.

Will, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said that Eichs decision to step down was illustrative of a new phenomenon in politics, saying no one likes sore losers, but now we have sore winners.

The gay rights movement is winning, particularly with regard to same sex marriage, with a speed and breadth that simply takes your breath away," he said. "In Oklahoma, in Utah, and elsewhere. Yet, unsatisfied with victory, they seem to want to stamp out and punish people for their previous views.

Will drew a comparison between the gay marriage debate and another hot topic in politics: campaign finance reform.

The people who want to reform our finances and increase government control over political speech and spending say well, everyone surely can be in favor of full disclosure of campaign contributions. This case is an example of why some of us who used to be for full disclosure no longer are, said Will. The people advocating full disclosure of campaign contribution say, "we just want voters to make an informed choice." That's not what they're doing at all. They really want to enable themselves to mount punitive campaigns and deter people and to chill political speech.

Adamawa APC postpones ward congress

The All Progressives Congress in Adamawa State has postponed Saturdays ward congress of the party due to late arrival of materials.

The Interim Committee Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Salihu Baba-Ahmed, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Saturday.

Materials were brought yesterday (Friday) which is late. We have scheduled a meeting of stakeholders by 4pm today to fix a new date for the congress.

I want to use this opportunity to further urge our party members to continue to bear with us and remain calm as everything possible will be done to ensure hitch free exercise, Baba-Ahmed said.

A former Chairman of defunct CPC, Alhaji Ibrahim Waziri, who spoke on the development, said that with late arrival of materials, the congress was not feasible.

Waziri said this was also because the people that paid for forms to participate in the congress were yet to obtain the forms.

Those that paid for forms were yet to obtain the forms. We need about two to three days to enable them obtain the forms, fill and return them.

We will use the meeting of stakeholders today to fix an appropriate date for the congress, he said.

Ward Congresses: Kaduna APC denies selecting candidates

The Kaduna State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, on Friday urged its supporters to ignore the rumours that it had already selected officials for the various wards in the state.

Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the interim state chairman of the party made the call at a news briefing in Kaduna.

He said it was untrue that the 17-member congress committee constituted to conduct the ward congress had since anointed those to be presented to members for ratification on Saturday.

He said: Party members should ignore the rumours that the committee or any of its members, has directed that positions should be shared or a specific person must emerge as consensus candidate.

He said that all members of the APC are entitled to contest for any position during the congress in line with the partys constitution and guideline.

The chairman said even where a consensus candidate emerges, the person must be endorsed by the party members at the ward.

In an event that there is no consensus, election will hold. For the avoidance of doubt, the committee is not compiling any list of anointed candidates, he said.

Baba-Ahmed assured all those wishing to contest, that the election would be safe, secure and transparent.

He advised all the party members to be orderly, law abiding and shun any conduct that would threaten the peaceful conduct of the congresses.
