U.S. Sen. Rand Paul will include a stop at the University of Iowa on a tour of early states in what is expected to be his official announcement that hes running for president in 2016.
Paul is expected to kick off his campaign April 7 in Kentucky. On April 10, he is planning a 10 a.m. speech at the Iowa Memorial Union on the Iowa campus.
An online event invitation calls the Iowa City speech an historic event.
Johnson County is typically seen as a Democratic bastion, but Paul has been appealing to young voters and minorities across the country.
Steve Grubbs, an Iowa adviser, said Paul does well with college students, and the campaign is going to emphasize that point of strength.
The Republican field is expected to be quite large. And it is just beginning to take form. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, officially announced his candidacy on Monday. And he and Paul may well end up competing for many of the same voters.
In a Fox News interview on Monday, Paul said that although he and Cruz come from the same wing of the Republican Party, it also goes to winnability.
