Grimes: Rand can't run for president and Senate

Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentuckys secretary of State, is threatening to take Rand Paul to court to block him from running both for president and reelection to the Senate in 2016.

In her first television interview since Sen. Mitch McConnell routed her by 15 points last month, the Democratic Senate nominee declared that she will not be bullied by Paul, who is a heavy favorite to win a second Senate term if hes allowed to stay on the ballot.

The law is clear, Grimes told WHAS-TV in Louisville. You cant be on the ballot twice for two offices.

Well look to the court for any guidance that is needed, she added. And at the end of the day, were not going to be bullied.

Grimes also told the Louisville ABC affiliate in the interview published on Wednesday that she has not decided whether to seek a second term as secretary of State in the 2015 election.

The 36-year-old left no doubt that she continues to harbor political ambitions beyond the Bluegrass States chief elections official. She would be a top Democratic recruit to run for Senate in 2016 if Paul bows out.

Grimes said she knows theres a bigger plan in store and pronounced herself excited for 2015. Shes also been talked about as a Democratic primary challenger to Attorney General Jack Conway in next years Kentucky governors race or against GOP Rep. Andy Barr in 2016.

Theres encouragement from all different directions, no shortage of opinions, thats for sure, she told the station. But no election should be run unless its in your heart and the facts are there to win, and thats what I will weigh and to make sure is there before I make any determination.

Rand Paul fires warning shot at Jeb Bush

WASHINGTON - Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has fired his first political shot at former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Bush announced Tuesday that he was "actively exploring" a run for president in 2016. Hours later, people who were on Google doing "Jeb Bush" searches saw an ad from RANDPAC, Paul's political action committee.

The ad appeared right under stories that popped up on Bush.

"Join a movement working to shrink government. Not grow it," the ad said.

So, although Paul has said he won't make a decision on a White House bid until March or April, the senator's PAC clearly decided not to leave Bush's day unanswered.

TIME magazine had a screen grab of the ad:

Consider it a Paul warning shot across Bush's bow.

The Paul camp has a regular presence on the web, said RANDPAC spokesman Sergio Gor.

"RANDPAC routinely runs various advertisements across various platforms," he said in an e-mail.

Anthony Weiner praises Rand Paul – CNN.com

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Anthony Weiner thinks Rand Paul is playing it smart.

The former Democratic congressman from New York, who resigned in 2011 amid a sexting scandal, offered up some 2016 insight Friday, saying the Kentucky Republican senator is wise to make privacy concerns a big part of his potential presidential platform.

"Paul's strategy could put him in a great place in a Republican primary," Weiner wrote in a column for Business Insider.

Paul has been the most vocal opponent in Congress against the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance programs involving phone metadata collection.

He filed a now-stalled lawsuit against the Obama administration earlier this year, and he voted against an NSA reform package last month because he felt it didn't go far enough in tweaking the agency.

(He took some heat, however, from some in the anti-NSA community for his vote because the measure ultimately failed to advance.)

Privacy issues have become a staple in Paul's stump speeches on the 2014 campaign trail, where he was known to hold up his cell phone in the air and declare that what Americans do on their phones is "none of the government's damn business."
