Chamber of Commerce Enlists Rand Paul in Alaska Ad
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is out with a new ad in Alaska, featuring an unusual choice of messenger: Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul.
The ad, launched Friday, shows Mr. Paul in an all-black suit criticizing Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Begich and encouraging voters to support Republican challenger Dan Sullivan. Washington is horribly broken, Mr. Paul says. Nothings going to change when Mark Begich votes with his liberal Democrat friends 91% of the time.
Washington takes too much of our freedoms, and too much of our money, he continues. I think Dan Sullivan will get it back.
The ad, which cost the Chamber more than $1 million, will air statewide on broadcast TV and online. Mr. Sullivan, who won the GOP primary in August, has since begun to pull ahead in polls. (See the trend chart based on poll averages compiled by Real Clear Politics.)
The Chamber has already spent hundreds of thousands on Mr. Sullivans behalf.
But the choice of Mr. Paul to carry the Chambers message in Alaska is a surprising one, as the two have not always seen eye-to-eye. In past years, Mr. Paul has embraced the GOPs more conservative wing, while the Chamber has advocated on behalf of the partys pro-business establishment candidates. This summer, Mr. Paula likely presidential contender in 2016told Republican activists that the party wont win the White House if it nominates another Chamber of Commerce Republican, according to Politico.
Chamber of Commerce is fine, I was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, but a Chamber of Commerce Republican is not going to win a national election, Mr. Paul said.
But as he lays the groundwork for a 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Paul has adjusted his messaging, making adjustments to his foreign-policy profile in particular that are bringing him more in line with the partys mainstream. A key example: Mr. Paul is backing U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the first military action hes supported since winning election.
Blair Holmes, a spokeswoman for the Chamber, said the choice of Mr. Paul is in line with the groups strategy this cycle. This fits into our theme this year of using credible messengers in target races, she said. In states like Alaska, were focused on the independent swing vote and think Sen. Paul is well positioned to deliver a message that appeals to them.
Earlier this week, Mr. Paul also campaigned on behalf of North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. During the GOP primary this spring, Mr. Paul had backed the tea party-aligned candidate, Greg Brannon, and campaigned heavily on his behalf. The Chamber has backed Mr. Tillis since before the primary.
