Virginia GOP objects to McAuliffes Republican pick for elections board

RICHMOND Republicans have raised concerns about one of Gov. Terry McAuliffes picks for the State Board of Elections, saying the nominee chosen to represent the GOP on the panel has voted in recent Democratic primaries.

McAuliffe (D) last week nominated three people to serve on the three-member board, two Democrats and one Republican, in keeping with state law requiring the sitting governor to give one seat to the opposing party.

The Republican is Matthew Gray of Richmond, state director of the Humane Society of the United States.

Pat Mullins, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, wrote to McAuliffe this week objecting to the fact that the governor did not seek the GOPs input on the nomination.

Morgan Finkelstein, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Virginia, said no one could recall McAuliffes Republican predecessor consulting the party on his Democratic nominee.

But two Republicans close to the situation said privately that the bigger concern within the party is Grays participation in Democratic primaries something that bars him from being considered a Republican in good standing under state party rules. The two spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

Gray has worked for a variety of Republican organizations, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee between 2005 and 2007 and the presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008.

Gray also spent four months in 2008 working as director of development for the Republican Party of Virginia.

But he has voted in Democratic primaries in 2009, 2013 and 2014, according to the Republican sources, who reviewed the partys voting records and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Gray declined to comment.

TURNING UP THE HEAT Activists pressure GOP to roll back ObamaCare

WASHINGTON Republican lawmakers are facing rising pressure from conservative groups and activists to go big or potentially go home in their fight against ObamaCare.

After taking control of Congress thanks to big victories in the November midterms, Republicans who ran in part on their opposition to the law are starting to roll out legislation undoing pieces of it. But the party is stuck in an internal debate over how far they can really go risking a potential backlash from the partys right flank if they dont go far enough.

Tea Party activists say they are frustrated with the pace of progress toward conservatives goal of upending the Affordable Care Act.

Some activists are encouraging members to fax blast all 435 House members and 100 senators and demand they drive a stake through the heart of ObamaCare once and for all.

Some Tea Party-backed lawmakers like Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are leading the charge against the Affordable Care Act. The senator, and potential presidential candidate, recently warned that Republicans will get walloped in 2016 if they dont live up to their promises, including working to get the health law eliminated.

But so far, several Republican lawmakers, like Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, have indicated theyd have better luck chipping away at the law piece by piece.

On Wednesday, Hatch and Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., introduced legislation to repeal the health care laws individual mandate requiring most people to obtain insurance. The legislation, called the American Liberty Restoration Act, is backed by 20 GOP senators.

"This legislation strikes ObamaCares individual mandate and restores the freedoms outlined in the Constitution, Hatch said in a written statement.

Hatch and a group of bipartisan senators also are pushing a bill to scratch the laws controversial 2.3 percent tax on medical devices.

Several conservative activists and commentators in recent weeks have urged the new Republican Congress to be aggressive. Since right after the election, Brent Bozell, chairman of the conservative ForAmerica group, has said the Republican majority must keep its promise to pass a full repeal bill, if only to force a presidential veto.
